Kapurthala, November 26
The Kanjli wetlands near Kapurthala are once agog with migratory feathered friends. A visit to the lake this morning revealed that the wetlands are home to nearly 500-odd migratory birds of various species, including common pochard, coots, and common teal and small and large cormorants. The avian migration, which began at the fag-end of October, will continue till March.

Myriad noises greet visitors to the catchment area. The Kanjli wetlands, which came into formation in 1870 with the construction of a head regulator near Kanjli village on the Kali Bein rivulet, are an important ecosystem in the region.

Spread over 183 hectares, it has similar values like the Harike wetlands. It supports a diversity of life forms. Twenty-six hectares of forest area created along the Kali Bein provides suitable habitat for many organisms. Various species of mammals, fish, birds and other vertebrate fauna, micro-fauna and a large species of plants are important features of this wetland.

Dr Satnam Singh, Principal Scientific Officer, Punjab State Council for Science and Technology, says: “It is too early for us to say as to how many birds are expected to arrive this year. Most of the birds use this area as transit camp.

They stay here for a few hours or a few days and move further to other areas like the Harike and the Ropar wetlands for roosting and nesting.”

He attributes the increase in bird concentration in the area to the regulation of optimum water level, controlled exploitation of fish and clearance of hyacinth menace.

However, the menace of water hyacinth is again posing a threat to aquatic fauna of the Kanjli wetlands. A vast green carpet of hyacinth can be seen floating on the water. Increasing pollution levels, deforestation in catchment areas, excessive grazing and soil erosion are other threats to the water body.

According to a study by the Punjab State Council for Science and Technology, there were roughly 22,993 hectares under 32 natural wetlands during early 1940s.

These were Bhupinder Sagar in Patiala district (3,161 acres), Kahnuwan Chhamb, Keshopur Miani Jheel, Mand Bharthala, Chhangali Chhamb in Ferozepore district (2,470 acres), Gaunspur Chhamb and Rahon-de-Chhamb in Jalandhar district (741 acres).

However, after Independence most of these wetlands disappeared as these were converted into farmlands.

Other freshwater natural and man-made wetlands which are under stress are Jasterwal Jheel in Amritsar district, Keshopur Miani Jheel and Chhawarian Bangar Chhamb, both in Gurdaspur district, Mand Bharthala in Nawanshahr district, Dholbaha reservoir in Hoshiarpur district, Hussainiwala wetlands in Ferozepore district and Nangal lake in Ropar district.

Majitha, November 26
Various anti-Badal panthic parties organised Taksali Akali Bachao Rally at Dana Mandi here today. They accused the SAD President, Mr Parkash Singh Badal, for converting the party into a private company.

Addressing the rally, Mr Jagteshwar Singh Majithia said Mr Badal was ignoring party workers by projecting Mr Vikaramjit Singh as SAD candidate from this constituency.

He said Mr Vikramjit Singh was not even a resident of Majitha as his forefathers shifted to Gorakhpur a long ago and set up factories there. He said if he was not given ticket by the SAD then he would be forced to fight the election as an Independent candidate.

Interestingly, various anti-Badal panthic forces came out openly in support of Mr Majithia.

Among those who attended the rally were Mr Manjit Singh Calcutta, MLA, Mr Raghbir Singh Rajasansi and Mr Inderjit Singh Zira, general secretary, SAD (Longowal), and Mr Gurwinder Singh Shampura.

Mr Raghbir Singh alleged that the RSS and the BJP were controlling the SAD. He said Mr Avtar Singh Makkar, SGPC President, had no interest in promoting the interests of the community and only wanted to appease Mr Badal.

Mr Calcutta alleged that Mr Badal had sold the SAD and the SGPC into the hands of the RSS, the BJP and the Arya Samaj.
