Amritsar, November 22 Decorated camels, horses and bullock carts, besides the display of gatka, giddha, bhangra and bands of different schools were the main attraction of the procession. It was flagged off by Mr K.S. Kang, Commissioner, Municipal Corporation. The procession that began from Town Hall culminated at the Company Bagh. Students of BBK DAV College performed gidda, while students of the Miri Piri Academy presented gatka during the procession. However, the people crossing through the Hall Bazaar area faced inconvenience due to traffic jams. They said such functions should not be held in the congested areas of the city. In the evening, a cultural show was organised at the Company Bagh, which was inaugurated by Mr Jugal Kishore Sharma, MLA and Chairman of the Amritsar Improvement Trust. The show began with shabads by students of Khalsa College. The audience was spellbound by the performance of three-and-a-half-year-old Agam Shingari on tabla. Students of the Government School for Girls, Mall Road, sung a chorus “Ambi Da Boota” followed by vaar by girls of the SR Government College for Women. Harleen Kaur, a student of Guru Nanak Dev University, and students of the BBK DAV College for Women performed by singing folk Songs. Shabads were sung by Bhai Gurnam Singh (Patiala) Ashiq Ali Bahi Lal of Pakistan, the 17th generation descendant of Bhai Mardana, along with his brother Bhai Irshad and two sons at Khalsa College. A play “Tatti Tavi Da Sach” was also staged at the college to mark the 3rd centenary of the martyrdom of Guru Arjun Dev. |

Phagwara, November 22 Narinder Kaur, Amandeep’s aunt, alleged that he threatened Sucha Singh last month that he would set his house on fire if he did not send him money from the UK. She alleged that last night Amandeep and Kamal set the house afire for his refusal to send more money. Arrested
The Behram police has arrested motorist Pritam Singh in a hit-and-run case. He tried to escape after knocking down a constable and a cyclist on the Phagwara-Banga road here on Wednesday. The accident took place at Jassomajara village when the constable, Surinder Singh, signalled him to stop for talking on the mobile while driving. The injured were admitted to a private hospital at Dhahan Kaleran village. A case was registered against Pritam Singh. |

Mr Krishan Kumar, Deputy Commissioner, stated in a press note on Wednesday that the procedure of appointing NRI nambardars had been simplified in the district. Henceforth, their appointments would be done within 20 days. Earlier, it was done within two months. A list of villages where the nambardars would be appointed had been released. Members of local unit of the Punjab PWD Mulazam Union served an ultimatum to the Executive Engineer, Provincial Division, PWD (B&R), on Wednesday to appoint the next of kin of two Beldars - Sarwan and Roop Lal - on compassionate grounds within 10 days. The union also sent petitions to the PWD Minister, Mr Partap Singh Bajwa, and the Deputy Commissioner, Mr Krishan Kumar. Mr Surjit Singh Kaler, senior vice-president of the union, said they would start agitation if the Executive Engineer did not accept their demand. |
Commissioner, Mayor spat
Amritsar, November 22 Mr Datti alleged that the Commissioner had tried to get the Chief Minister where no official show could be held. The Mayor said Mr Kang had organised a small show at the Gateway of India, near the Wagah bypass and requested Chaudhary Jagjit Singh, to request the Chief Minister to stop for a few minutes at the partially built structure. Mr Datti said that no official show could be allowed there. Meanwhile, Mr Kang said he had only kept a few chairs at the site where the statue of the legendary General Sham Singh Attariwala was being erected at the gateway of India. As it was on the route of the Vikas Yatra, he had felt that the Chief Minister may opt to have a look at the memorial. |
MRF penalised for delay in paying damages
Jalandhar, November 22 Representatives of MRF paid Rs 5,000 to the complainant on August 7 this year, whereas they were bound to pay it by June 16 as the copy of the order to pay damages had been received by the MRF representatives on May 16 and they were directed to pay the damages within a period of one month. Interestingly, the MRF representatives paid the damages only after the filing of the execution application by the complainant on June 29. Observing negligence on the part of the MRF representatives, the President of the forum, Mr M.M. Bhalla, and two members, Mr Surinder Mittal and Ms Rakesh Kumari, further directed the representatives to pay to the complainant Rs 1,500 as costs on execution application. Subsequently, the complainant got a letter a few days ago from the office of MRF in Jalandhar whereby a DD of Rs 1,500 was enclosed. The complainant filed his initial complaint on July 18, 2005, in which he stated that the tyre of his car burst on June 12, 2003. He had purchased the tyre from Chadda Tyres, Shastri Market, Jalandhar, on December 28, 1999. At this, Mr Mohan contacted the MRF district manager and Chadda Tyres and apprised them of the incident by showing the defective tyre. Following which, he was assured a prompt redressal, but nothing was done on the ground. In its order, the forum observed: “The case of the complainant is proved that the tyre burst due to some manufacturing defect and the complaint was not properly attended to.” |
Ramdev opens dispensary
Jalandhar, November 22 The ‘aushdhalyas’ would work as branches of the Haridwar-based ‘Pitanjali Yogapith University’,” which is headed by Swami Ramdev. He was here to inaugurate north India’s first ‘divya aushdhalya’ at local Sri Devi Talaab Temple. The ‘aushdhalya’ here would be connected through Internet with the Haridwar university. “The ‘ausdhalya’ here will he supervised by our trained vaids and medicines would be available to people on no-profit no-loss basis. I will keep coming to inspect the working of the branch every three months and people with incurable diseases will be treated,” said Baba Ramdev, accompanied by the president and other members of the Sri Devi Talaab Temple Management Committee. The yoga guru also appreciated the committee’s efforts as it would help poor people get treatment without huge amounts of money. Swami Ramdev praised the people of the state and said he was happy to see that Punjabis were embracing yoga in a big way. |
TB officers attend seminar
Banga, November 22 The workshop organised to implement the Revised National Tuberculosis Central Programme was attended by the District Tuberculosis Officers from Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Nawanshahr and Hoshiarpur districts along with their pharmacists and storekeepers. Mr Guru said the DOT providers had been identified and trained in almost all villages of Punjab. The objective of the workshop was to ensure proper management of distribution of drugs and logistics from the state headquarters to district units and from district units to identified DOT centers. |
In-laws held for pregnant woman’s death
Kapurthala, November 22 The body of the newly wed was found hanging from a fan. It was yet not clear if she hanged herself to death or she was hanged by someone else. However, the parents of the woman alleged that she was hanged to death by her in-laws. Subsequently, a case under Section 302 (murder), IPC, was registered against her husband Sumit Kumar and his four relatives on the statement of Mr Madan Lal Gambhir, victim’s father. Following registration of the case, Sumit Kumar, his father Chander Pal and his mother Bhola Rani were arrested whereas his sister-in-laws Aarti and Mala are absconding. |

Colours have entered my frames recently”, said Rajesh, who liked geometry and trigonometry more than arithmetic as a student. Rimpy, a teacher in Apeejay College of Art, wanted to know the thought behind a couple of luminous works. Rajesh tried to connect his creative process to mystic experiences. Till the end of the interaction he tried to explain his process in reference to Maya, Shunya. He also revealed about his study of Tantra and works of G. R. Santosh and influence of his grandfather, a sadhaka. Rajesh is trying to build a worldview with the traditional bricks, which puts his art outside the realm of those concerned with here and now. |
Ex-Principal’s son in copying case
Amritsar, November 22 According to the sources in the medical college, Dr Bhushan, an intern, was found in the bathroom trying to pass on chits to the student. Before more staff could be arranged to apprehend him, he ran away. The medical college authorities have taken a strict view of this incident and were likely to register a case of copying against him. |

PTU youth festival begins
Jalandhar, November 22 In the classical dance Tarangini from the host college and Gaganjot from Baba Banda Singh Bahadur College of Engineering and Technology, Fatehgarh Sahib, performed Kathak. Tarangini depicted scenes from the Ramayana before ‘cheer haran’ and Lord Rama ending the life of Ravana. Gaganjot depicted scenes from the life of Lord Krishna. In Indian group song, contestants from nine colleges presented various patriotic numbers. Rangoli had seven participants, including a boy. Clay modeling had seven participants who were asked to choose from two topics, ‘Thoughtful’ and ‘Enjoyment’. The contest was delayed as the clay given to the participants was too wet. |
