New beginning for senior citizens
Jalandhar, September 10 The dream started taking shape on Friday when these youngsters descended on their village, distributed books free of cost and extended primary lessons. The group, led by Mr Monty Sehgal, a social worker and general secretary, Punjab Youth Congress, asked them to complete their worksheets by October 2, when the group would be back on Gandhi Jayanti to check the home work. The team adopted the village on a request made by Mr Harpinder Singh, sarpanch of Ramnagar village. The team promised that all qualifying persons would get Rs 200 each. The most successful would get Rs 500. “They are our roots. Our long-term objective is to provide education to all elder people who had been deprived of it,” said Mr Sehgal. “Nobody has ever thought about these old people and they have been taken for granted by one and all. I am elated to see them learning, particularly, at this stage of life. Their enthusiasm about education is unparalleled. I am thankful to Mr Sehgal and his team for the noble cause taken up by them,” said Mr Harpinder Singh. Mr Amar Chand, one of the students, said he had dreamt of becoming an officer, but could not give practical shape to his dream. “It is good that at least I am going to be literate and be able to read and write in future,” he said. Mr Thakar Singh, another newly enrolled student, said his long-time agony was that he couldn’t read the newspaper. “This is a new milestone in my life. I am almost going to start my life afresh,” he said. Mrs Kartari Devi said had she been educated she would have been able to plan the future of her children better and changed the lot of her family. “I feel that now I would be able to recite Gurbani in my village gurudwara. Education is a long term investment but, I have been devoid of it for long,” she observed. |
