Jalandhar, July 18
Demanding the whereabouts of Sanjiv Kumar and Gurvinder Singh, who are presumed missing in Iraq, their family members and leaders of political parties blocked the National Highway No 1 near the BSF Chowk here this afternoon.

Making an almost impossible demand, Sanjiv’s family from Authaula village in Jalandhar and Gurvinder Singh’s from Gurdaspur, supported by the Lok Bhalai Party leaders, got together outside the Deputy Commissioner’s office little before noon. The members demanded that the administration should urge the Centre to inform the families about the location of the two men by 2 pm.

After that the LBP’s official president, Mr Avtar Singh Mullanpuri, and secretary, Mr Ramandeep Singh Bharowal, decided to block the road to mount pressure.

The road was blocked for about half an hour after which the dharna was lifted on an assurance given by the DC, Mr A. Venu Prasad.

Mr Bharowal said the DC told them that he had contacted the Ministry of Home Affairs and the officials had told him that it would take two days to get the requisite information.

Autorickshaw owners blocked vehicular traffic near the Phowara chowk on the Kapurthala-Sultanpurlodhi road for more than an hour to protest against the alleged harassment by the local traffic police.

The agitating owners parked their vehicles in the middle of road and jammed the traffic. They alleged that the traffic police was issuing challans despite taking a monthly bribe from them.

The road was opened to traffic on the assurance given by the traffic in-charge Harjit that no autorickshaw owner would be harassed.

He said the traffic police had issued a challan to a three-wheeler in the morning for wrong parking near the roundabout.

He denied the allegations levelled by the auto owners that traffic police was taking monthly bribe from the autorickshaw owners.
