Militancy has declined, says V.K. Duggal
Srinagar, June 16 Addressing a press conference here this evening after reviewing security arrangements for the Amarnath yatra, Mr Duggal said adequate security arrangements were in place. He said there was perfect coordination between different security agencies and the administration to ensure smooth conduct of the yatra. Mr Duggal hoped the two-month long yatra would be peaceful and incident-free like the past three years. All arrangements for the pilgrims at different places including the main six camps on the Pahalgam and Baltal axis were in place. He hoped there would be no problem in facing any eventuality arising out of a natural calamity along the yatra route. “What could be required in case of some eventuality would be a quick air support”, he said. It was disclosed some more places along the yatra routes had been identified to provide helicopter services in case of eventuality. Replying questions, Mr Duggal pointed out that there was considerable decline in the level of militancy in Jammu and Kashmir in the past five months compared to the corresponding period last year. He expressed concern over the recent incidents of violence in the state saying that attacks on innocent labourers in Anantnag and grenade explosions in Jammu bus stand were “unpardonable”. Mr Duggal added proper action would be taken against those responsible for such incidents while two persons responsible from the Jammu attacks had been arrested. Asked about recent incidents in Kupwara district where two protesters were killed and several others injured, Mr Duggal held strict action under law would be taken against those found guilty of any violations. He added that the Prime Minister’s assertion on zero tolerance was applicable to all throughout the country. Earlier the Union Home Secretary reviewed security and related arrangements for the yatra with senior officers of the central and state government here. Mr Duggal had also an aerial visit along the yatra routes but returned here without landing anywhere due to bad weather in the area. He was accompanied by the Director-General of the BSF and the CRPF, and senior officers of the state government including DG Police, Gopal Sharma and Chief Secretary, C. Phunsong. |
