Weather threat to yatra again
Srinagar, June 15 A fresh batch of over 4,500 yatris left Pahalgam-Chandanwari today on the 32-km-long trek between Chandanwari and the holy cave shrine of Amarnath. A spokesman of the Amarnath Shrine Board said here that another batch of 84 pilgrims went to the holy cave by helicopter services. He added that 1,838 pilgrims returned to Pahalgham this morning after paying obeisance at the cave shrine. Meanwhile, heavy rains at various places along the track to the holy cave shrine of Amarnath have once again threatened suspension of the pilgrimage from both Baltal and Pahalgam routes. Official sources today said heavy rainfall was recorded this afternoon at several places on way to the holy cave shrine from both Baltal and Pahalgam tracks, making them slippery and dangerous for trekking by the pilgrims. Another report said light snowfall was received within the periphery of the holy shrine. After remaining suspended for three consecutive days due to landslides triggered by heavy snowfall and incessant rains at several places along the track to the holy cave shrine, the two-month-long Amarnath pilgrimage resumed only yesterday following improvement in weather conditions. Meanwhile, a batch of over 350 sadhus arrived in Pahalgam from Jammu today, while no convoy was allowed on the fourth consecutive day today. This step was taken in order to avoid any rush of pilgrims at the halting stations along the high mountainous route to the cave at the height of 3,952 metres from sea level. Meanwhile, the Governor, Lt Gen (retd) S K Sinha, who is also Chairman of the Amarnath Shrine Board, took stock of the arrangements for the pilgrims during his visit to Sheshnag on Pahalgham-holy cave route. He interacted with the officers at Sheshnagh and was briefed about security and other arrangements. He was told that 534 tents had been pitched and another 316 would be erected in next few days. These would accommodate about 6,000 to 8,000 pilgrims at this destination. |
