No review of quota policy, says FM

Finance Minister P. Chidambaram has made it clear that government has no intention to review its decision to extend 27 per cent reservation to other backward classes in higher educational institutions.

Reply to SC daunting task for government
New Delhi, June 10
As the Centre prepares its reply to the Supreme Court on petitions against OBC quota in higher education institutions as stated by the Finance Minister P. Chidambaram, the three queries put to the government by the apex court might pose difficulties to it as the available data on OBC population was quite conflicting.

13 torched alive in AP village

A history of feuds between two families of a village has resulted in burning alive of 13 persons, including five women and four children, in the neighbouring Mahabubnagar district.

Andhra cuts ST on petrol, diesel
Hyderabad, June 10
Andhra Pradesh has followed in the foot steps of Maharashtra in providing modest relief to the common man on fuel prices. The Chief Minister, Mr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, today announced that the government had decided to reduce sales tax on fuel prices, resulting in a reduction of 40 paise on a litre of petrol and 22 paise on diesel.

Hisar hottest at 45.9ºC

The heat wave sweeping most parts of North India today further intensified, with Hisar in Haryana turning out to be the hottest place at 45.9ºC, four degrees above the normal range, even as the Met Department here sees no immediate respite from the heat in the region.
