Shruti Chopra of CFC School in BRS Nagar has topped the city in the All-India Senior Secondary Examination conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education by scoring 95.6 per cent marks in the commerce stream.

2 labourers killed in cave-in
Ludhiana, May 23

Two labourers were killed when the well they were digging caved in at Jainpur village late last night. The bodies of the labourers — Kailash Yadav (28) and Devi Singh (35) — were dug out after a massive operation in which three JBC machines and eight tractors were used for over three hours.

BJP dharna against killing of Hindus in J&K
Ludhiana, May 23
Activists of the BJP today staged a protest demonstration against the killing of Hindus in Jammu and Kashmir by terrorists. The party activists also submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner, alleging that the government in Jammu and Kashmir was playing down the killing of Hindus.

Hundreds prayed for the life of two labourers of Gopalpur village in Ludhiana district who were buried under earth when walls of the well they were digging caved in this morning. Despite joint rescue operation by the administration the residents of the area, they could not be extricated and remained buried.

Thousands attend Cong rally

Cong to contest on development plank

The Congress will contest the coming Assembly elections on the plank of all-round development and its performance. This was stated by Mr Ramesh Joshi, secretary, Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee, and director, Punjab Pollution Control Board, while addressing workers at Cycle Market here last evening. He called upon the party cadres to propagate the achievements of the Congress among the masses.

Martyrdom kirtan darbar

The much talked about quadri-centenary of Guru Arjan Dev's martyrdom has finally taken off with the holding of night-long kirtan darbar convened by the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) at Tarn Taran on May 20. By all standards, the inflow of the crowd in the town for the kirtan darbar was huge.

Exempt bicycle industry from excise duty: federation

Representatives of small-scale industry have urged the government not to impose excise duty on the bicycle industry as it is reeling under pressure. A deputation of the Federation of Tiny and Small Industries of India, headed by Mr Joginder Kumar, met the Joint Secretary (TRU), Ministry of Finance, Mr Gautam Ray, yesterday in this regard.

PAU students to visit Moscow

Under the exchange programme of training agricultural students, a batch of nine students from Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, will visit the Moscow State University of Environmental Engineering on May 28. The students will stay there till June 11 to acquire knowledge and practical training in farm mechanisation, water resource management, agro processing and other agricultural engineering related fields.
