Amritsar
Plea to release compensation
: Members of the BlueStar Tenants Merchants Sufferers’ Association held a meeting to chalk out a plan to impress upon the government to release compensation in lieu of their shops, which were damaged during the Army operation at the Golden Temple, here on Monday. Mr Mohan Singh Gandhi, general secretary of the association, rued that for the past 22 years they had been fighting for justice but without success.

BOOKED: Ram Singh, his wife Sukhwinder Kaur, their son Gurjant Singh and daughter Harjit Kaur have allegedly assaulted Gurmeet Singh of Goindwal village and stolen Rs 6,800, a gold chain valuing Rs 18,000 and damaged his Maruti car. A case has been registered.

TWO HELD: The CIA staff have arrested Shamsher Singh of Bassian Colony (Raikot) from the area of bridge canal and seized 20 kg of poppy husk from him. In another incident, the police has arrested Rajdeep Singh of Sidhwan Kalan from Sidhwan Khurd and seized 10 kg of poppy husk.

OPIUM SEIZED: The Dehlon police has arrested Suresh Kumar of Hakampura of Udaipur tehsil in Rajsthan from the area of Gangman village and seized 400 gm of opium. In another incident, the police has arrested Amarjit Singh of Gagkalan from Malak and seized 11250 ml of illicit liquor. Cases have been registered.

: The Senior Superintendent of Police, Mr Ishwar Singh, on Tuesday instructed all police officers to remain accessible to people and ensure prompt redressal of their problems. A toll free telephone number of the police control room—9872223456—has also been started for any assistance. He said the residents could also email the police at sspjall@vsnl.net or fax at 2452446.

Special clinic: A special clinic has been set up at the Oxford Hospital to help patients of implants like pacemakers. The clinic, said to be a first such venture in north India, was inaugurated by Dr S.P.S. Grover, the Managing Director of the hospital here on Tuesday. The hospital would hold a regular pacemaker and device clinic on second Tuesday of every month. More than 100 patients of pacemaker and devices were checked up free of cost.

: Arya Samaj, Chander Nagar, organised its annual function here on Monday with the association of Ved Prachar Mandal, Ludhiana and Jagannath Puram Welfare Association. The chief guest was Mr Sharanjit Singh Dhillon, Akali Dal MP. Mr Prem Mittal, Senior Deputy Mayor, Swami Shobhanand Saraswati Swami Savitanand, councillor Rajiv Katna were honoured by the organisers.

Nayar, Senior Manager, Punjab National Bank, Chowk Saidan branch, was elected president of the All India Punjab National Bank Officers Association, Ludhiana zone, at a meeting of the association here on Sunday. The other members are Mr Kanwal Kumar, vice-president, Mr Ashok Arora, zonal secretary, Mr Kulvir Singh, joint secretary, Mr Satish Chopra, treasurer, Mr Ravinder Vig, sub-treasurer and Mr K.S. Johal, Mr Onkarjit Singh, Mr Paramjit Singh as executive members.

Rare surgery
: A rare surgery on Mr Khem Singh (97 years) was performed by a team of doctors headed by Dr Harminder Singh at Guru Nanak Mission Hospital, Dhahan Kaleran. Mr Khem Singh, was incapacitated due to fracture of neck of fermur bone. He was totally dependent on servants for the past three months. He had visited a number of doctors but in vain. A special prosthesis called bipolar modular hip prosthesis was inserted in the patient’s bone, said Dr Harminder Singh.

Declamation contest: A declamation contest on AIDS awareness was organised here at Government Senior Secondary School under the school adolescent education programme launched by the Punjab AIDS Control Society and NACO, with a view to creating awareness among school students. Baljit Singh, Amandip Kaur and Pooja won the first three prizes, respectively. Mr Balihar Singh Bains, District Science Supervisor, Mr Lehmber Ram, Mr Baldev Singh, Mr Jagdish Rai, Ms Sunita, Ms Mohinder Kaur and Ms Nitika Bhandari, among others, also delivered special lectures to mobilise students to help curb the dreaded disease.

: A meeting of members of the Retired Railwaymen’s Federation was held in the office of the URMU here on Sunday. The meeting was presided over Mr R.P. Gupta, Divisional President. The following have been elected office-bearers of the Pathnkot unit of the federation: president — Mr Sat Pal Sharma; general secretary — Mr Hira Lal and treasurer — Mr Milkha Singh.
