Riot victims stage
protest
Jalandhar, April 27 Most of the victims included those who had applied late due to ignorance or those who were not able to complete all documents in time and submit these to the administration. But all of them said that since they possessed valid red cards issued to them by the state government, they should not be denied the right to compensation. Mr Prabhu Singh, a resident of Preet Nagar, said that he possessed red card as well as a ration card, but he said that he was not aware of the cut off date for the submission of the applications. Mr Ajaib Singh, a red card holder from Ludhiana and a resident of Preet Nagar, said that he had submitted his application in time, but since he had not deposited a copy of ration card, his file was rejected. Other riot victims, including Mr Karnail Singh from Chogitti Byepass, Ms Jeet Kaur from Preet Nagar, Inder Singh, Partap Singh and Jagdish Singh, all three from Ludhiana, had a similar grouse. The riot victims were supported by Mr Amarjit Singh Amri, district president, BJP Yuva Morcha, Jalandhar city. Mr Karnail Singh, Assistant Commissioner (grievances), said that since most of the victims could not complete the formalities in time, he could not be of much help for them. He said that he, however, had accepted all late applications so that their cases could be forwarded to the state government for consideration. |

State govt to give farmers ownership rights to land
Kapurthala, April 27 Thousands of farmers, who have been using the government lands for decades for agriculture, are now demanding the ownership rights on these lands. A delegation of farmers from Sultanpur Lodhi Subdivision, where thousands of acres of land was in their possession, presented a memorandum to the local MP, Rana Gurjit Singh, at Suvidha Camp in this regard. Mr Bhatnagar, who was here to review the progress of the computerisation of land records and the functioning of Suvidha Centre, said that 30 to 40 thousand acres of government land was under the illegal possession of farmers in the state. Commenting on the progress of computerisation process of the land records, Mr Bhatnagar said, “I hope that all the land records in the state would be computerised within next two years. “The computerisation of land records at Jalandhar, Nawanshahar, Sangrur, and Kapurthala was going on well.” Mr Bhatnagar also revealed that the government was also planning to hand over the computerisation work to the private contractors in the revenue tehsils through tender system, as there were lots of complaints regarding the functioning of the computers’ department, as the staff was not properly trained in handling the computers causing great inconvenience to the people, who visit the tehsils for the registration of their property sale deeds. However, he added, the job of the contractor would only be confined to the preparation of the sale deed document and the remaining process of comparing the document and authentication would be done by the revenue officer at the time of registration of sale deed. Replying to a question on the recruitment of patwaris, he said the government had given the nod to recruit 471 patwaris on a regular basis. Besides, it was also working out the modalities to fill the vacant post of patwaris very soon, he added. Mr Raminder Singh, Deputy Commissioner, Kapurthala, disclosed that the computerisation of land records in the district would be completed within a year. |
Roadways employees
stage dharna
Jalandhar, April 27 The protesting employees, who were, however, not allowed to stage their dharna exactly in front of the residence of the minister by police officials, alleged that the Congress-led state government was out to cause ‘damage’ to the Punjab Roadways. They alleged that the fleet of buses of the Punjab Roadways had been downsized from over 2400 to merely 861 and, similarly, the number of roadways-run depots had also been decreased from 18 to 10. The agitated Punjab Roadways employees asked the minister whether “writing off” as many as 4500 posts of employees, and handing over the Punjab Roadways to private hands were steps towards the development of the roadways. They also alleged that corrupt elements in the roadways were being ‘sheltered’. The dharna was organised by the joint action committee of the employees of the Punjab Roadways. |
