‘60 pc cases govt-related’
Kapurthala, April 22 Justice Bedi was here to inaugurate a permanent Lok Adalat. He said that with a phenomenal rise in the population and development in the country, the executive failed to provide its services to the people, making them to look towards the courts. There were 60 vacancies of subordinate judges each in Haryana and Punjab. The written tests for 31 of these vacant posts in Haryana had already been held, while the 60 posts lying vacant in Punjab would be filled by July this year. Thirteen posts of judges were also lying vacant in the Punjab and Haryana High Court, Justice Bedi added. Keeping in view the shortage of presiding officers, there was no proposal to set up more fast track courts at the moment, he informed. When asked about the corruption prevailing in the judiciary, he admitted that there were “black sheep” in the judiciary also. He claimed that the High Court was strict in tackling the corruption cases against the judges, some of whom were even suspended to bring more transparency in the judiciary. The High Court was in the process of providing better infrastructure to the judges, he said, adding that it had taken the initiatives to provide library to all the judges. Besides, he added, the electronic systems were being installed and the training was being imparted to the judges. Highlighting the achievements of the Lok Adalats, Justice Bedi claimed that in the past eight years, Lok Adalats had disposed of 3,29,563 cases and awarded compensations worth more than Rs 819 crore in various accident-related and other cases. A total of 4,098 Lok Adalats were held in Punjab during this period, informed the acting Chief Justice. He disclosed that the state-level Lok Adalat, held at Amritsar on February 6 this year, which was presided over by Justice Y.K. Sabharwal, the Chief Justice of India, had disposed off 14,500 cases out of 25,000 cases in a single day by 104 benches. Earlier, Justice Bedi inspected the working of the 12 Lok Adalats held at Darbar Hall. A total of 5,155 cases were today considered by these Lok Adalats and of these 3,969 were disposed off. The Adalats also awarded compensations worth Rs 157,14,164 settling various cases. Keeping in view, the great rush of litigants, the District and Sessions Judge, Mr Sham Sunder Gupta, immediately ordered the setting up of two more Lok Adalat courts to dispose of the summary cases. |

3 arrested in Harshdeep case
Jalandhar, April 22 The arrested include Madanmohan Bedi, alias Billa, his wife Kiran Bala, and his brother Bharat Bhushan, alias Pappu. The two brothers were rounded up yesterday. The three were produced in the court today. They have been remanded to the police custody till April 26. The boy used to visit the house of Madan Mohan Bedi every evening to watch television and was last seen in his house on April 4, after which he went missing. The parents of the victim had alleged that they were suspicious of their neighbour Madanmohan and his family. The death of the boy had angered residents, who had blocked the Jalandhar Pathankot National Highway near the village yesterday, demanding action against the guilty. They had also protested against the “police inaction” in the case. The DSP Rajinder Singh said the police had obtained the remand of the accused till April 26. The body of the boy was cremated around 5 pm today evening after the postmortem, which was conducted at Guru Ram Das Medical College, Amritsar. |
Demolition drive flayed
Jalandhar, April 22 A group of residents, led by Mr Kimti Bhagat, a secretary of the SC Morcha, a frontal organisation of the BJP, today urged the Deputy Commissioner, Mr Anurag Verma, to not to allow Mr Mahey to enter the Bhargo Camp area. He alleged that Mr Mahey had played a ‘partisan’ role during the recent MC demolition drive. The residents, who also handed over a memorandum to the DC, alleged that the Bhargo Camp area was being targeted due to a longstanding tiff between Mr Mahey and Punjab Transport Minister, Mr Mohinder Singh Kaypee. They also reportedly threatened to go on a “fast unto death” if the demolition drive was initiated in the area again by the MC. Meanwhile, Mr Mahey did not budge from his stance, as he asserted that the demolition drive would be resumed in the area once again after the clearance of debris from the area. “The court deadline is August 7 and we will work accordingly. A majority of the people of the area is happy over what has been done by the MC. Moreover, the demolition drive was started after a prolonged discussion with about 20 leading residents, including councillors, of the area. About 1500 encroachments have been removed and we are going to provide people with civic amenities in the area,” said Mr Mahey, who was accompanied by Mr Raj Kumar Gupta, MLA. Mr Mahey, who claimed that the MC was carrying out the beautification of the city, however, could not give a satisfactory answer to a query about the alleged failure of the MC to forfeit the earnest money of an advertisement company, which had been allotted the controversial work of the construction of an over bridge in front of the local DAV College. Since the MC, according to the Mayor, felt that the company would not be able to perform the task, it had decided to undertake the construction job on its own. Though the cheque given by the company had allegedly got bounced, no action reportedly had been taken by the MC against the company. |
No let-up in purchase of wheat by private dealers
Kapurthala, April 22 The Food and Civil Supplies officials from Hoshiarpur checked the stocks of a roller and several flour mills in the presence of the ADC, Ms Bhawna Garg. However, nothing tangible was found, sources claimed. According to information, the private traders and millers were buying a major share of the arrivals in the new grain market by paying a rupee extra than the Rs 700, new MSP. Private traders lifted 19,279 quintals of wheat from the local grain market yesterday, while the government agencies could merely procure 284 quintals. A total of 19,563 quintals of wheat arrived in the local market yesterday. Private traders were able to get hold of most of the wheat arriving in the market with the connivance of commission agents by shelling out Re 1 more for every quintal of wheat. They have reportedly formed a syndicate and even hold meetings with commission agents. The agents are happy to purchase wheat for private traders who provide hassle-free payments. Mr Vishavjeet, a commission agent at the local market, claimed that private traders lifted the stock immediately with the help of hired labour. “As such, we don’t have to stack wheat bags,” he added. He added that the agent was not responsible of damages or losses to the wheat purchased by the private traders before the lifting of stocks, as was in the case of purchases for government agencies. Sources informed that Mr Raminder Singh, Deputy Commissioner, Kapurthala, during a visit to the local grain market, had instructed the District Food and Supplies Controller, Mr Gulbahar Singh, to arrange a meeting between him and the private dealers on Monday, so that they could be persuaded to quote a higher price of the wheat, as was happening in Hoshiarpur and Gurdaspur. |
