New Delhi, April 16
Much to the embarrassment of Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, a group of Congress MLAs today shouted slogans outside her residence, urging her to take strong measures to stop the ongoing demolition process in the Capital.

The MLAs, led by Mukesh Sharma, met Mrs Dikshit with an appeal to convene an emergency cabinet meeting and bring in an ordinance to stop the demolition and sealing of illegal structures in the Capital.

They alleged that the Delhi government was not taking necessary steps even after Congress president Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh showed interest in resolving the issue.

Mr Sharma said the MLAs asked the Chief Minister to go on an indefinite fast against the demolitions and they were more than willing to join her.

“We asked her to call an emergency meeting of the Cabinet and adopt a resolution against the demolitions. The government must also bring an ordinance to save the people of the Capital from this crisis,” Mr Sharma said.

Ghaziabad thirsts for water
Our Correspondent

Ghaziabad, April 16
There is an acute shortage of water in Ghaziabad. Not only people are not able to get enough water for taking a bath but in many colonies insufficient potable water has made people’s life miserable.

The main cause of water crisis is the prolonged power cuts in the city. The water supply is just in trickles whereever it is supplied at all.

Water supply with good pressure in the tap has become a thing of the past with the result people living on the first floor have to fetch water from ground level.

Residents of Vasundhra, Kaushambi, Surya Nagar and other colonies are putting up with acute water shortage. As a result, people are forced to go to work without taking a bath in this hot weather.

“Who do we lodge a complaint with” is the question on everybody is lips as complaints, they say fall on deaf ears.

Interestingly, the post of water supply officer is lying vacant for last 18 months.

On an average, each resident requires 150 litre of water daily but the Jal Nigam is not in a position to supply even 70 litre water per person per day.

In Varta Lok Colony of Vasundhra people have gone without a bath for many days now. The same is the state of affair in Kaushambi, Indirapuram, Surya Nagar, Chand Nagar, Ram Prastha, Rampuri and the adjoining colonies where people have been forced to purchase drinking water even.

Lajpat Nagar, Shalimar Garden too are putting up with acute water shortage.

Even posh colonies like Raj Nagar, Charngiv Vihar, Kavi Nagar, Tilak Nagar, Gandhi Nagar, Lohia Nagar too are getting little water.

According to a Jal Nigam official, with power cuts extending over hours together it is not possible to run the tubewell, pumps and other equipment. After supply of Ganga Jal was resumed, water supply from tubewells was stopped. Now, with low voltage and power cuts water from Ganga Jal scheme too has been adversely affected.

The water crisis is not going to be resolved with continuing power crisis, he said.

Whenever people try to contact senior officers and even the Nagar Ayukt (City Commissioner) some officials invariably reply back “sir, is out of station”. Similarly, Additional Nagar Ayukt S. Sehariya is said to have gone on a pilgrimage to Ajmer Sharif. Other officials find it just safe to the keep their cell phones in switched off mode.

New Delhi, April 16
The United Residents Joint Action (URJA), an apex body of the RWAs, has urged the government not to give blanket relief to the traders as it would lead to chaos in the Capital.

It also urged not to issue any ordinance under pressure from the traders allowing the residential premises for commercial use.

Shiv Raj, secretary of Munirka Vihar RWA, said, “Political leaders both at the state and Centre were confusing people as on the one hand, they were talking of making Delhi as an international city, on the other hand, they were approaching the Supreme Court to allow commercial buildings.”

Roshan Seth, an actor, said, “Courts were helping the citizens by implementing the existing law. It was the politicians who were playing the vote bank politics. Instead of developing the basic infrastructure or giving long-term relief to traders, the leaders were dividing society by inciting traders against residents.”
