Taking note of the Centre’s announcement of reserving 27 per cent seats in educational institutes for OBCs, the Election Commission has sought a reply from the Human Resource Development Minister Arjun Singh.

AMU moves SC against HC order
New Delhi, April 8
The Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) has moved the Supreme Court against the Allahabad High Court order striking down the central legislation providing 50 per cent reservation to Muslim students in the university and declaring that it was not a minority institution.

Health Ministry favours quota 
New Delhi, April 8
The Union Health Ministry has favoured the proposal of 27 per cent quota for students of other backward classes in medical educational institutes under it. The Health Ministry has written to the Human Resource Development Ministry, which had sought its views on the proposal, officials said.

India has categorically rejected the US suggestion to define its credible minimum nuclear deterrent emphasising that it has no responsibility to make any such declaration.

Many state governments started to shift Treasury accounts to other public sector banks as the countrywide indefinite strike by workers of the country’s largest bank continued for the sixth day today.

Firing in Aligarh, 1 seriously hurt
Lucknow, April 8
Aligarh remained tense on the fourth consecutive day today with fresh incidents of stone-pelting and firing reported in which at least one youth was critically injured. Stringent curfew remained imposed in practically the entire old city area. The district administration’s plan to relax curfew from this morning had to be shelved when fresh trouble started in Hathipura locality. Heavy stone-pelting was reported.

Sirohi and DGP Ashish Ranjan Sinha today flew to the Indo-Nepal border in Bihar to inspect the prevailing situation following reports that thousands of people were fleeing the Himalayan kingdom to escape increasing tension and threats by Maoists following a four-day blockade and chakka jam that began there yesterday.
