The Dr B.R. Ambedkar National Institute of Technology (NIT) has decided to keep its gates open for NRI students from the coming session.

Stating this here today, Dr Moin Uddin, Director, said the NRI students could take as many as five per cent of the total seats in the institute. Since the institute already had 430 seats and an approval for another 180 seats, he said, at least 30 NRI students could take admission in the institute in the new session.

MoU with IT Ministry

Another major announcement made at NIT was related to the introduction of two new courses as per an MoU signed with the Ministry of Information Technology. The director informed that the institute had received Rs 60 lakh to offer 15 seats each for two new M.Tech courses, one in Very Large Scale Integration (VLSI) design and the other in Information Security. He added that while the VLSI design course would be introduced in the coming session, the other course would be started a year later.

The director said that the intake of the students for B.Tech in all disciplines was likely to be doubled from this session. He said the approval for doubling the number of seats for civil engineering and industrial engineering had already been received. He added that the Ministry of Human Resource Development had also sent its consent for offering fellowship of Rs 9,500 per month to its 20 students, in addition to a contingency amount of Rs 20,000 per annum.

The director added that the fee structure for the NRI students would be different from the usual fee structure. “The NRIs would have to shell out five per cent more than the regular fee,” he added.

The NIT authorities are also planning to start the Direct Admission of Students Abroad (DASA), whereby foreign nationals studying in any country, including India, and Indian students studying abroad could apply for various engineering programmes for limited seats in the new session. The director added that the students could also apply under the cultural exchange programme or the self-supporting schemes of the Government of India.

The NIT authorities are also in the process of constructing a modern hostel for boys. Under its new expansion mode, NIT has also planned to spend Rs 5 crore to raise buildings for the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, and the Department of Instrumentation and Control Engineering. A language laboratory, with two studios, is also coming up on the campus.

It has also been decided to set up an IT Park and a computer centre at a cost of Rs 12 crore. According to the director, the IT Park would have laboratories that could be leased out to private companies for revenue generation.

The institute is adding yet another facility by introducing single-point to multi-point video conferencing at a cost of Rs 20 lakh, whereby teachers abroad could relay their lectures to the students here and vice versa.

Dr Moin Uddin said the system would operate through VSNL lease line as well as wireless connection. He said that the institute had already received equipment for Edusat connection, which would be installed by ISRO personnel soon. He added that a studio for the purpose would be set up at a cost of Rs 5 lakh.
