CM fails to keep date with Guru Ravi Dass followers
Jalandhar, February 13 Even as the CM was said to have gone to Delhi, the local leaders utilised the occasion to woo the community by inaugurating an intricately-designed building that would house Guru Ravi Dass museum. They also launched a portal, www.shrigururavidassji.com, on the life and teachings of the Guru. The museum hall, with beautifully-designed glass doors and windows, that has come up at a cost of Rs 60 lakh has just one painting pertaining to the birth of Guru Ravi Dass, and a computer system as of now. But Choudhary Jagjit Singh, Minister of Local Bodies, said he would spend an amount of Rs 25 lakh on it to further develop it for placing pictures, manuscripts and other items related to Guru Ravi Dass. The minister won applause from the gathering when he announced that on his persistent demand, the Chief Minister had allotted a one-acre land for Guru Ravi Dass research centre at Mohali. He said the land would be acquired at a cost of Rs 1 crore. The minister said two chairs had already been set up under the Guru’s name, one at Panjab University and the other at Guru Nanak Dev University. Addressing the gathering, he said that Rs 450 crore had been allocated for the social security fund for giving a stipend of Rs 50 per month to Dalit girls for buying books and stationery. The announcement of the Jalandhar Improvement Trust’s new housing scheme was made to coincide with the function. The scheme pertained to the development of the LIG flats at Salempur here. The Local Bodies Minister said that 942 (three-marla) LIG flats at low prices were coming up for the poor under a scheme called “Indirapuram”, named after the former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. These flats were coming up in Master Gurbanta Singh Enclave, named after the minister’s father. He said the flats would be two-room sets with modern facilities, including LPG supply through pipes, and parks. After the release of the brochure, Mr Tejinder Singh Bittu, Chairman, Improvement Trust, gave the details pertaining to the flats, informing the gathering that the ground floor of the flats would be available for Rs 3.7 lakh, the first floor for Rs 3.6 lakh and the second floor for Rs 3.5 lakh. He said the trust had tied up with the Oriental Bank of Commerce for easy loan. He added that the loan facility was available for the payment of the earnest money too. He said that bookings had begun from today and that they would continue for a month. The function was also attended by Ms Gurkanwal Kaur, Minister of State for SCs, BCs and Social Security and Development of Women and Children, Mr Avtaar Henry, Minister for Food and Civil Supplies, Mr Amarjit Singh Samra, Revenue and Rehabilitation Minister, and Rana Gurjit Singh, MP. On this occasion, noted ragi jatha of Bhai Harbans Singh Jagadhari Wale performed the kirtan. |
Check online your MP’s developmental works
Jalandhar, February 13 The complete account of various works being undertaken by the MP of one’s area is just a click away. By logging on to www.mplads.nic.in, one can get every detail pertaining to the entitlement of constituency, the amount released by the Government of India, various works sanctioned by the MP, the amount sanctioned for these works and the amount left unspent with an MP. Interestingly, while the Jalandhar administration recently posted the details of the works sanctioned by Rana Gurjeet Singh, MP, Jalandhar constituency, on the site, the Kapurthala administration is yet to follow the suit. It has yet to make online the details of works approved for some parts of the constituency falling in Kapurthala and Sultanpur Lodhi. In fact, this is the area where the MP has spent most of the funds availed of through the scheme. As per the information available on the site, Jalandhar has had an entitlement of Rs 20.05 crore, but the amount released is Rs 19.05 crore. This amount available with interest is Rs 19.29 crore, of which Rs 17.24 crore has been sanctioned for various works. The Centre has released only Rs 17.05 crore for Phillaur constituency, which is the least amount received in any of the 13 constituencies falling in Punjab. Out of this amount, the present MP, Mr Charanjit Singh Atwal, still has Rs 1.72 crore unspent under the scheme. However, the MPLADs site had some technical snag due to which the information pertaining to details of works sanctioned could not be culled. But as per the information available from the Kapurthala administration, the sanctioned works for Kapurthala Assembly segment include those pertaining to the repair of Balmiki Dharmshala in Sidhwan Dona village, the construction of community centre on the Mall Road, the water supply in the city and the sewage in Kasso Chahal village. Almost all 12 works sanctioned for Sultanpur Lodhi block include those pertaining to concrete flooring and drainage work being executed through the Executive Officer of the Municipal Council. As per the details available from the Jalandhar administrative complex, Rana Gurjit Singh had till last August, allocated only Rs 3 lakh from his discretionary funds which include Rs 2 lakh for computerisation of the Department of Journalism in the Regional Campus of Guru Nanak Dev University at Ladhewali and Rs 1 lakh for the building of Baba Mohan Das School. However, the details of the recent works undertaken could not be obtained, as officials concerned were busy with their meetings. |
Boom time for financial experts
Phagwara, February 13 Mr Jasmeet Singh, a Phagwara-based chartered accountant, says, “People are not clear about the intricacies involved in VAT. So, it is quite obvious that they have to rely on professionals like chartered accountants. We are expecting a business growth of 15 to 20 per cent.” Basically, the assessees coming within the purview of VAT are facing problems related to billing, sales number, TIN conversion, VAT returns and VAT audit. “For taking Input Tax Credit (ITC), an assessee has to file party-wise purchase details. Also, people want to avoid hassles in getting TIN, and filing VAT returns, as the paper work has increased enormously because of complex formalities,” says Mr Jasmeet Singh. Confirming an approximate 20 per cent rise in their income, a Jalandhar-based chartered accountant, Mr Ravi Singla, says, “VAT is a self-assessment tax, and as people are not clear about the minute details, we are there to help them. Moreover, no one wants to be on the wrong side of the things in the very beginning. So, they have to take the help of the professionals.” He also adds, “With the introduction of VAT regime, paperwork is going to increase, and the veracity of the returns will be checked through random or selected scrutiny.” However, these financial experts caution that the fear on the part of businessmen vis-à-vis the new type of tax is rather misplaced. The new tax regime is a modified phase of MODVAT and CENVAT, and it would help simplify the indirect tax system, reduce tax evasion, bring transparency and enhance tax neutrality, they say. Moreover, with the introduction of software like Tally 7.2, the evaluation of VAT has been simplified manifold, add the experts. |

Residents demand stoppage for trains
Dasuya (Hoshiarpur), February 13 Listing the problems being faced by the people of the area and surrounding areas that fall in Himachal Pradesh, the residents have also written to the Railway Minister, Mr Lalu Parsad Yadav. Mr Tulsi Dass Jagga, a member of the Advisory Committee, Northern Railways, told The Tribune that repeated representations to the railway authorities for granting a stoppage for Jammu-Hardwar and Swaraj Express trains at Dasuya railway station had proved futile. With a stoppage for these trains at Dasuya not only the general public, but also Army men from 18 Fields Ammunition Depot, Dasuya, would be benefited, he said. Meanwhile, the Bar Association, Dasuya, has also given a representation to the Railway Minister, requesting him to consider their demand for creating a stoppage for the said trains at the local railway station. The Bar president, Mr Bhupinder Singh Randhawa, said the creation of a stoppage for these trains would also help people from adjoining Himachal Pradesh to catch trains from Dasuya. |
