Sri Lanka whip SA to enter final
Sydney, February 7 Bandara destroyed the South African batting lineup, taking 4-31 from nine overs with his leg-spinners, as the Proteas collapsed to be all out for just 181 in reply to Sri Lanka’s 257-9. South Africa had needed to win just one of their last three matches to reach the finals but back-to-back losses against Australia meant everything was at stake in today’s last preliminary match. Sri Lanka made a flying start after winning the toss and electing to bat first, Marvan Atapattu and Kumar Sangakkara both scoring half-centuries. Atapattu slammed 80 off 122 balls then Sangakkara smashed 62 from 77 deliveries as the Sri Lankans raced to 175-1 in the 36th over when the South Africans suddenly hit back. Sri Lanka lost a steady stream of wickets to slump to 229-7 in the 47th over before Tillekeratne Dilshan chipped in with a rapid 30 to push the total past 250. South Africa’s reply started badly when they lost Dippenaar (nine) and Herschelle Gibbs (no score) to Chaminda Vaas, slumping to 19-2. South African skipper Graeme Smith finally found form, completing his first half-century of the tour, but after he fell for 67 the rest of the batting order collapsed. The first final between Australia and Sri Lanka will take place in Adelaide on Friday with the second match scheduled for Sydney on Sunday. A third match, if required, will be held in Brisbane next Tuesday. Scoreboard

Powar to join team in Pak
Peshawar, February 7 Powar, who is also handy with the bat, has been sent as a cover for Harbhajan Singh, who is nursing an injury to his bowling finger, Indian team manager Raj Singh Dungarpur told PTI. “Powar is expected to join the team by this evening and Harbhajan is also going to stay back,” he said. Pak regrets Indian flag goof-up
Peshawar, February 7 A giant Indian flag put up in the lobby of the fourth floor of the hotel where the Indians were staying, was also upside down with the green up and saffron at the bottom whereas it should have been the other way round, “The News” reported today. Indian team’s media director G.S. Walia said no protest had been lodged over the mistake but it was just a reminder to the PCB to look into the matter and ensure it was not repeated. “The Board has regretted the mistake and assured us it’ll not happen again,” Walia said.

Lankan colts score big win
Colombo, February 7 Against Namibia, the hosts scored 263 for eight and then dismissed the associate side for 126 with man of the match Sachithra Serasinghe following up his 41 runs with the bat with off-spin that produced three for 22 while super sub Rajeewa Weerasinghe took four for 24. The spinners, who were disappointing against Scotland, were one reason for Sri Lanka’s convincing win but another factor was their running between the wickets when they batted. Sri Lanka certainly look in good order for Friday’s match which, providing India beat Scotland tomorrow, will decide who tops Group C ahead of the Super League quarterfinals. In another match, South Africa kept alive their hopes of reaching the Super League quarterfinals by hammering the USA by 162 runs. The Proteas made 277 for eight and then bowled out the tournament newcomers for 115 in only 29.1 overs.

Haryana Ranji ODI team announced
Rohtak, February 7 In the team selected today, the selectors retained most of the players who represented Haryana in Elite Group of Ranji Trophy where the team’s performance was below satisfactory and it finished a poor fifth among seven teams in Group B. The selectors have dropped openers Chetan Sharma and Bageshwar Bisht who had failed miserably in the Ranji Trophy Elite Group matches this season. The name of Sandeep Singh also does not figure in the list. Sunny Singh, who shone last year but could score only 95 runs in eight innings of the just concluded Ranji Trophy tourney at an average of 11.87 runs, has been retained for the shorter version of the game. Among bowlers, off-spinner Gaurav Vashishta has made it to the team. Gaurav too had a frustrating season this year claiming just six wickets in six matches. Even more surprising is the inclusion of Jitender Malik who managed to score only 29 runs from five innings and failed to get a single wicket in 3 matches though he was underutilised as a bowler. Amit Mishra, who captained the side in Ranji Trophy Elite Group will continue as Captain while Mahesh Rawat will be the wicketkeeper. Sunny Singh or Mahesh Rawat are likely to open in innings with Sanjay Bamal. The pace attack will remain in the hands of Joginder Sharma and Sachin Rana. Team: Amit Mishra (captain), Mahesh Rawat (wicketkeeper), Sumit Sharma, Sachin Rana, Siddharth Verma, Joginder Sharma, Jitender Malik, Sanjay Bamal, Pradeep Sahu, Saurav Virmani, Shafiq Khan, Tejinder Mann, Sunny Singh & Gaurav Vashishta. Coach: Ashwani Kumar. Trainer: Ravi Kant. |
AIFF serves ultimatum on Fransa Pax
New Delhi, February 7 Fransa Pax, disputing a penalty awarded to Mahindra United by Delhi referee Vikramjeet Singh during their NFL match on January 30 at Margao, which Mahindra won by 2-1, the Goan club had abstained from their next match against Air-India “which brought losses to the sponsors and the AIFF”. Fransa wanted the result of the match to be overturned, but the federation refused, though it recalled the referee from the league. Following this, the AIFF suspended Fransa Pax’s next two league matches against Sporting Clube De Goa on February 6 and Salgaocar on February 9. An emergency committee meeting of the AIFF and NFL here today discussed “all aspects of the match between Mahindra United and Fransa Pax Club, including examining video clippings, report of the match commissioner, referee and the LOC (local organising committee)” before rejecting the protest note of Fransa on the ground of specific provision of rules governing the NFL. After the meeting, AIFF president Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi said Fransa had been given time till 5 pm tomorrow to give their reply, failing which he has been authorised by the committee to take appropriate action. He said the disciplinary committee of the federation would meet on February 15 to deliberate on the conduct of the Fransa officials, report of the match commissioner and the referee, and would be disposed of. Mr Dasmunsi, who is also the Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting, said Fransa’s “unilateral decision” to withdraw from the NFL was “detrimental to the league structure and our commitment to the spectators, sponsors and television”. Mr Dasmunsi said if the federation was forced to take the drastic action of scratching Fransa from the 10th NFL, the players would be allowed to register themselves with other clubs to protect their career and monetary interests. But he cautioned that such a concession would be a “one-off thing, and would not be precedent”. He also made it clear that no new team would be added to the NFL if Fransa were dropped. |

NFL: Dempo hold JCT to goalless draw
Ludhiana, February 7 In what was perceived to be a tough outing for the Goans in the absence of key players, Dempo relied more on defence and ultimately achieved their objective of adding a valuable point to their kitty. With today’s draw, Dempo’s tally has gone up to seven points from seven matches while JCT now have six points. Playing their second home match here, JCT took the field in full strength with opportunist striker Parveen Kumar making a comeback after missing the previous tie against East Bengal following two yellow card bookings. However, as the minutes ticked away, JCT’s frustrations multiplied in the face of crowding and delaying tactics adopted by the opponents. Dempo coach Armando Colaco later admitted that they were playing for a draw. “I am happy that we are going back with one point from an away match,” he said adding that in the absence of key players like Riston Rodrigues, Jose Colaco, Valeriano Rebello, Lazarus Fernandes, Climax Lawrence, Sameer Naik, and Roberto Mendis da Silva, his team had little choice than to fall back and defend. However, on a few occasions they did carry out forays through dashing striker Ranti Martins with Bolaji Majek marshalling the midfield intelligently. While skipper Stanley Colaco played a pivotal role in the defence through gallant rearguard action, goalkeeper Abhijit Mondal’s efforts under the bar were also praiseworthy. On at least two occasions, he proved to be his team’s saviour showing fine anticipation. JCT played an attacking game from the onset and appeared serious to log full points. However, their efforts came to nought as Dempo fell back to defend and through their crowding tactics did not allow the marauding JCT forwards to have a clear view of the goal. Nevertheless, JCT did make some close calls in either half but wayward shooting let them down. Dempo initially went on the offensive and off a move on the left flank, Ranti Martins despatched a powerful shot but was wide off the mark. A counter-attack by JCT fetched them a free kick on the edge of the box and Rennedy Singh floated the ball dangerously. However, Dempo goalkeeper Abhijit Mondal leapt high to make a neat collection. Dempo’s Ishfaq Ahamed also appeared dangerous on one occasion when he managed to enter the box from the left but was ruled off-side. JCT had a golden chance in the 37th minute following a move by Rennedy Singh on the right. Having covered some ground, he sent a back pass to Parveen who was on the clear and only had the goalkeeper at his mercy. But Parveen only managed to roll the ball over the goal line. A few minutes before the breather, Dempo’s Nascimento Silveira’s piledriver brought out the best in JCT goalkeeper Kalyan Chaubey who intercepted brilliantly. On changing ends, JCT made a couple of substitutions bringing in Baldeep in place of Rennedy Singh. Baldeep made an immediate impact when he centred for Sunil Chhetri but Chhetri volleyed high over the bar. Soon after, Parveen relayed the ball to Baldeep whose snap shot was blocked by the Dempo custodian. A free kick by JCT’s Marcos Pereira from the edge of the box also failed to yield the desired result. In the 69th minute, JCT’s Johnson Banner had a gilt-edged chance when he managed to cut through a horde of defenders and had only the goalkeeper at his mercy. However, Dempo goalkeeper Abhijit Mondal once again stood in the way and blocked his shot. Towards the end, JCT replaced Sunil Chhetri with the veteran Ram Pal and Sukhwinder with Shivraj Singh but the complexion of the game remained unchanged. Johnson’s quick pass to Parveen at the fag end also went waste as the latter failed to intercept the ball inside the box. JCT coach Parminder Singh, while ruing the missed chances, said his team did not get the desired start. “Hopefully, we will make amends in the subsequent rounds,” he said. |
