12 hurt in clash with police in Srinagar

Srinagar, February 7
At least 12 persons, including three policemen, were injured today when activists of separatist parties tried to take out Muharram processions in violation of prohibitory orders here and clashed with the police who fired teargas shells and rounded up 50 persons.

Ittehadul Muslimeen leader Masroor Abbas Ansari, son of Hurriyat Conference leader Moulvi Abbas Ansari, and 28 of his supporters were taken into preventive custody as they tried to take out a procession to mark the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, grandson of Prophet Muhammad, official sources said.

As the attempts of the police to disperse the separatists peacefully failed, they fired teargas shells and used baton to bring the situation under control, sources said.

The protesters pelted stones at the police in which nearly a dozen persons, including SHO of the Kothibagh police station and two constables were injured, the sources said.

The police chased the protesters away and took 29 persons into preventive custody, lodging them at the Kothibagh police station, the sources added.

Earlier in the day, JKLF leader Javed Ahmad Mir and his 21 supporters were taken into custody at the Rajbagh locality of the city for attempting to take out a similar procession.

The JKLF activists were taken to the Rajbagh police station.

The sources said the detentions were effected to maintain law and order in the city. — PTI
