Blast outside high-security airport area

Srinagar, December 23
An Improvised Explosive Device (IED) planted in a vehicle exploded prematurely outside the high-security technical area of the airport here today.

In other militancy-related incidents across the state a top militant commander and a Pakistani infiltrator were killed overnight.

Meanwhile, one of the two militants hiding in a building at Sopore died while another was still firing on the security forces.

Official sources, admitting to a major security lapse, told UNI that the vehicle, fitted with IED, crossed the two security check points.

However, the premature blast of the IED in the vehicle, just a gate away from the main airport, averted a major disaster, they said.

They said the driver, with the IED probably hidden in a fruit box, managed to cross two security check points. However, when he was asked to register his name in the book before entering the main airport, a blast occurred in the vehicle.

Sources said no one was injured as the driver was entering his name in the book at the time of blast and security forces were also at a distance. — UNI
