Volcker: Natwar was notified
Congress denies receiving notice
New Delhi, November 4
A new dimension was added to the controversy over the UN inquiry report on the Iraq oil-for-food programme when its author Paul Volcker indicated that External Affairs Minister K. Natwar Singh was asked for his comments on the document and laughed off the Congress’ threat to issue legal notice for naming the party as a beneficiary.

External affairs minister and senior Congress leader K. Natwar Singh may have secured the support of the Left parties, but a sizeable section of his own partymen are mounting pressure for his removal ever since he was named a beneficiary of Iraqi oil deals by a UN committee report.

US personnel arrive for air exercises amid protests
Kolkata, November 4
The government has decided to go ahead with joint exercises planned between the Air Forces of India and the US from November 7, despite opposition from Left parties. The US air force personnel landing at the Netaji International Airport at Dum Dum today were greeted with demonstrations and ‘go back slogans’ by angry CPI(M) workers and supporters.

The opening of relief camps along the Line of Control for earthquake victims of Jammu and Kashmir and Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir have hit a roadblock as the armies on either side are unable to evolve a mechanism for transporting the aid packages.

Gross turnover tax may replace octroi

The Punjab Government appears to have narrowed down to gross turnover tax under value added tax as a source of revenue for compensating civic bodies for abolishing octroi.

Three Shiv Sena MLAs quit
Mumbai, November 4
The Shiv Sena in Maharashtra received a major setback today with three of its MLAs in the Maharashtra Assembly resigning their seats. Tendering their resignation to Speaker Babasaheb Kupekar, the three MLAs expressed support to dissident Shiv Sena leader-turned Congress minister Narayan Rane.

A Bihar Police team, which came here to execute a non-bailable warrant against Union Minister Jaiprakash Yadav, today raided the official residence of the minister here. Mr Yadav has been charged with misusing his official position to cause the “illegal escape” of his brother Vijay Prakash from police custody, sources said. — UNI
Task force formed
New Delhi, November 4
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has constituted a task force on “Global Strategic Developments”, with strategic affairs analyst K. Subrahmanyam as its chairman. The task force, which will submit its report within six months, will examine various aspects of global trends in strategic affairs. It will be serviced by the National Security Council Secretariat, according to a press note. — TNS
