Saddam defiant at trial
Challenges legitimacy of the court

A defiant Saddam Hussein today refused to give his name and challenged the legitimacy of the court, but then pleaded “not guilty” as he went on trial for crimes against humanity allegedly committed two decades ago.

Dismissing
apprehensions in some quarters that the opening of the
Line of Control for earthquake relief would boost
infiltration of Pakistan-based militants in Jammu and
Kashmir, the Centre today said it was not averse to
opening of one or two points along the LoC for extending
relief materials to quake-affected people in PoK.

have pushed the earthquake death toll in Pakistan to
nearly 78,000, regional officials said today.

phone facility for quake-hit

The BSNL today
commissioned free telephone services for the quake-hit for
contacting their relatives across the LoC. The services
would be available for 15 days at four destinations in the
state.

Judge’s
murder: police remand for doctor, accomplice
Patiala, October 19
Dr Ravdeep Kaur
and Manjeet Singh, a religious preacher, who were
arrested last evening for the murder of Mr Vijay
Singh, Presiding Officer, Labour Court, Chandigarh,
were remanded in police custody till October 28.
They were produced before Dr Rajneesh, Judicial
Magistrate, Patiala. |

Situation
in Mau improves
Lucknow, October 19
With women and children being
allowed for two hours today to make daily purchases, the situation in
Mau is fast returning to normal. The relaxation was, however, not
described as curfew relaxation. According to district officials, the
decision to relax the curfew will be taken after consulting the peace
committee later in the night.
