Judge’s murder: police remand for doctor, accomplice

Dr Ravdeep Kaur and Manjeet Singh, a religious preacher, who were arrested last evening for the murder of Mr Vijay Singh, Presiding Officer, Labour Court, Chandigarh, were remanded in police custody till October 28. They were produced before Dr Rajneesh, Judicial Magistrate, Patiala.

Mr Inder Mohan Singh, SP (D), said that the sword used by Manjeet Singh in the crime had also been recovered from the Bhakra canal near Ghanaur village after the accused disclosed the fact.

Mr S.M. Sharma, I.G. Punjab Police, Patiala Zone, at a press conference late last night, said Dr Ravdeep Kaur, masterminded the murder of Mr Vijay Singh, as she had been feeling humiliated after the deceased had refused to have an affair with her after she started living separately from her husband, also a doctor three years ago.

Mr Sharma said Dr Ravdeep Kaur had given Rs 5 lakh to Manjeet Singh, a resident of Shiekhupura village of this district, who came into contact with Dr Ravdeep Kaur in connection with the treatment of a patient.

He pointed out families of Dr Ravdeep Kaur and Vijay Singh had close ties and once a proposal in connection with the marriage of Vijay Singh and Dr Ravdeep Kaur was considered and discussed by the families. However, things could not materialise.

After Dr Ravdeep Kaur separated from her husband, she tried to have an affair with Vijay Singh. But when her offer was spurned she felt humiliated. Dr Ravdeep Kaur after coming in contact with Manjeet Singh planned to kill Vijay Singh three months ago.

For her task, she paid Rs 50,000 advance to Manjeet Singh and rest of the money, which was Rs 4.5 lakh was given to him after the murder. Vijay Singh received 25 injuries of sharp-edged weapon and was declared dead when taken to hospital. He was attacked around 10.30 pm on October 13.

Mr Sharma said the police officials, who solved the case, would be rewarded.

The police got clue to the murder from family members of Vijay Singh who suspected the involvement of Dr Ravdeep Kaur. They also disclosed that Dr Ravdeep Kaur had been lodging complaints against Vijay Singh to the police and one such complaint was investigated by its Economic Wing.
