One militant killed, another escapes
Srinagar, October 18
Two unidentified militants shot the Jammu and Kashmir Minister of State for Education and PDP leader, Dr Ghulam Nabi Lone, after sneaking into his official residence in the heart of the city at Tulsi Bagh here this morning.

The seniormost Judge of the Supreme Court, Mr Yogesh Kumar Sabharwal, was today appointed next Chief Justice of India to succeed Mr R.C. Lahoti, retiring on October 31.

It was “moral cowardice” on the part of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leadership versus Congress “support of men, money and arms” that dominated the 189-minute discussion on “roots and causes of terrorism, which caused huge loss to life and property in Punjab” in the State Vidhan Sabha before it adjourned sine die here this evening.

Judge’s murder: doctor arrested
Patiala, October 18
The district police has made a breakthrough in the murder case of Senior Judge Vijay Singh, which took place at the local polo ground near New Moti Bagh Palace of Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on the night of October 13 by arresting a doctor, Ravdeep Kaur, of this region.

Mufti to remain in saddle
New Delhi, October 18
The Congress is in no hurry to pick up the reigns of the government in Jammu and Kashmir early next month in keeping with the power sharing arrangement with state Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed’s PDP especially as the relief and rehabilitation for the October 8 earthquake affected needs to be accorded highest priority.

Swinging into action, the district administration today lodged FIRs against 50 persons in Mau, including sitting local MLA and mafia don Mukhtar Ansari as well as local leaders of the BJP and the Hindu Yuva Vahini. None of them have been arrested as yet.
