THE henna-artist is all set to trace a handful of chuckling green flowers on the canvas of your skin. No wonder, you are so excited about the entire exercise. Here are some tips. If you have already applied mehndi, remember not to dip your hands in detergents for long. Also avoid using detergent-based shampoos for washing tresses. You can use a glove in case of an emergency. In case, you have an appointment with the henna-artist, make sure your hands and arms are grime-free before you request him to display his talent on your palms. Also, applying cold cream a night before will only leave your hands supple. Go for it. Again, get rid of the loathsome tan if you plan to get blooming calendulas neatly drawn on your lucid arms. You can take professional help. Or else, take help of the “desi” remedies. You and your friends can get together and call a henna artist to your place. It is going to be convenient, especially if you wish to get the design traced on your feet and legs. Otherwise, request someone to drive you to him. After the henna artist has performed his feat and the henna is dry, apply limejuice after every two hours for the entire day. That’s all folks, happy colouring. — Photos by Manoj Mahajan |

Sajna hai mujhe sajana ke liye… DRESS up like a blushing bride, even if you are not. Here is how to find your dream look on Karva Chauth: Get that flawless matte look oh-so-hot these days. Choose a shade of oil-control makeup that is shine free. Make sure that it matches with your skin tone. Dark for dark, light for light. Use a wet sponge to blend evenly around your temples and jawbone for a barely-there look. Go get that tangy glow by dusting peach hue on your cheeks and jawbone. Blend evenly with dexterous fingers. For those lucky lips, line your pouters with cocoa colour, then fill in with matte lipstick in berry red hue. For those deep dark dreamy eyes, draw a fine line close to your upper lashes using a lining pen in black. Extend the line slightly beyond the outer corner of your eye. Next curl your lashes and sweep mascara in black to get that doe-eyed look. Eager to get nail paint right? Here are some handy tips: If you have short nails, please ditch dark hues. They make the nails look even shorter. Opt for light and shimmery tints like shiny purple or alluring browns. Remember to match the colour of your pouters with complementing nail enamel. You can pair lip hues like plump and chocolate with nail shades like copper or plump tint. Also get rid of the dark circles. They do not match your complexion. You can perk up tired eyes by placing two slices of cucumber over them. If you do not wish to sit in your living room with your eyes hidden under cucumber, you can apply a cream that contains natural extracts. After cleansing, dab a small amount around the area with your fingertip. Blend in without rubbing too hard. If dull skin is what you are suffering from, use a moisturising body wash or a soap to breathe life into dull skin when washing up after a night out. |

THIS is the day for evoking the gods, to pray for the health, security and safety of the husband. In a festival that has tremendous social and cultural significance of binding families together, Karva Chauth is a special occasion to indulge the woman of the house, to help her fulfil her pride in being married. There is great festivity in the air and a traditionalism that has evolved over the years without dampening the ardour of the emotions. The two more important substances, without which the festival is incomplete and which are supposed to bring luck in the lives of the married couples are the ‘Sargi’ which the mothers-in-law get for their daughters-in-law and the Baya where the mothers of newly wed girls gift almonds, matthis and presents for the parents of the sons-in-law. ‘Sargi’ marks the beginning of the fast before sunrise and is consists of pheni (a sweet made of semolina which is dipped in milk and had), matthis (sweet and salty ones), halwa or kheer (conventional sweets marking a special occasion in homes). Girls often get new clothes too as part of the ‘Sargi’. It also comprises mithai that the girl likes and a hearty breakfast consisting of all her favourites provided she can eat all this early morn! Sindhi Sweets at Sectors 17 and 8 makes specially crafted, colourful baskets in which to put the Pheni and Matthis. Their specialty is that all their delicacies are prepared in pure ghee. According to owner, Mr. Neeraj Bajaj, “Ghee does not dry the throat like oil does. Especially since water is not allowed till you break your fast, you need to have something that will soothe not irritate your throat.” So 200 grams of Pheni made in ghee comes Rs. 40 and the Matthis for Rs. 120 per kg. Their selection of sweets and their special recipes also delight. So you can pick up dry fruit chikki at Rs. 450 per kg to break your fast or then you could choose the traditional Peras—Mathura Peras for Rs. 100 per kg, Badam and Kesar for Rs. 150 per kg or perhaps their Motichoor laddoos which they claim is their forte at Rs. 130 per kg. After sunrise the morning passes in festive activities like decorating the hands and feet with henna, doing up the pooia thalis with special flowers and meeting friends and relatives. The Karva thalis with little diyas, a small image of the goddess, tikka, sindoor, karva (vessel containing water) and red sacred thread is passed around by the women while the recitation of the legends is on. — Gayatri Rajwade |

THERE are some who forecast the future and some who forecast the weather. But there are others who forecast the futuristic trends in fashion. Harleen Sabharwal is one of them. She has earned for herself quite a reputation for forecasting trends, and has carved her way into the fashion industry with massive hard work. She is in Mohali these days at the Canadian Institute of International Studies, an extension (CIIS) campus of Fanshawe College of fashion and design, Ontario State, Canada, to deliver a lecture to the students pursuing course in fashion and design. In one of her lectures, she threw light on different aspects of the fashion field. She elaborated on the role of a fashion forecaster and its growing horizon in today’s fashion scenario. “Forecasting is all about visualizing future trends, through a study of the present and a revival of the past,” she says. She stresses the need for a good forecaster in the international field. Talking about upcoming trends, Harleen says that international seasons- spring, summer, fall and winter do not work here. “In India, there are three seasons of four months each_ September to December is the festival season, January to April is wedding season and April to July is the slack period.” She stresses the need to sharpen the skills as the fashion industry is growing at a massive pace. Further, discussing about the upcoming fashion trends, she said fashion is 99 per cent research and rest is creativity, which could only be developed after gaining thorough knowledge. “Indian designers need to do some real work to set trends so that they can get down to some serious fashion forecasting,” she tells budding designers. Harleen was born in Mumbai and has been in this field from past many years. Knowing fashion industry in and out, she said a career of trend forecaster is growing fast and holds good future in this field.

Love yourself and love will find you
I have just been through a bad affair, broken off with my boyfriend and am trying very hard to recover and deal with my feelings. How can I tell if I am ready to date again. I constantly feel something is not right with me. This has been a big blow to my self-esteem. What do I do? — Sarika, Chandigarh One date worries are just a natural part of the human psyche. If you are with the right person, then you will forget about all these anxious thoughts. Feel as if you are the most gorgeous creature on this earth and when you go out on a date again, be full of confidence. It is your positive attitude that will attract the person and if he is not your type, just let him go, and move on. We all have our little faults but we all attract our own types. If you are easy with yourself, you will definitely attract someone who will appreciate you. Do not be false and pretentious because then you will naturally only attract the wrong man. So, just be there for yourself and definitely there will be somebody there for you. We had been married for 24 years and deep down inside, I knew our relationship was a bit tired but being a typical Indian woman, I was always secure in the knowledge that we have built a life together. Our 18 years old daughter was the apple of our eye and I felt things were great the way they were. We had a beautiful home, Anil worked late hours but always got home at night. Our weekends had the safe familiarity of entertainment and the comfortable quality of a family routine. Until one day he walked off with another woman. How do I cope with my situation? —Amrita Jain, Patiala Life can be difficult but that’s life. Thank your stars you are not in an emotionally abusive relationship and fooling yourself in, believing that this is happiness. I think we all need to line with the truth to be completely happy. This is the time for you to draw on all your in inherent strengths. God definitely has some other plan for you. Discover your true purpose. Women have a habit of involving themselves too much in, their house and hearth and loose their identity completely. Remember there is another you outside your marital status. Just think of this as an opportunity to get in touch with yourself. Join a computer class, a hobby course or simply do gardening if you have access to it. Let your mind unwind. Take that much needed emotional holiday you deserve. Cry your heart out, there is nothing to feel ashamed of. And decide to start liking your life all over again with a new perspective. Life has so much to offer. Getting out of bed in the morning is a big drag or I could say a struggle. I feel like a zombie the whole day. Sometimes, when I go to the grocery stone or supermarket, I realise I have come home with all the wrong stuff. Standing in front of the shelves, I am incapable of making any decision even something like what brand of tea to buy or which juice do I like or do I need a diet coke. How can I live my life like this? I am desperate. Please help. —Geetanjali Sabbarwal, Ambala Well firstly get a proper diagnosis through a doctor. Sometimes depression symptoms are a sign of physical illness. It could be a thyroid dysfunction or it could even be anemia. But on the other hand, it could be just plain accumulated stress. My experience as a stress management consultant has shown me many cases where most physical diseases actually are the outcome of extreme stress. So check yourself thoroughly. You are just maybe completely overwhelmed with all that you are having to deal with in your life and you just need to get away from it all. Learn to take just mental holidays if you think your finances do not permit you to take physical ones. Charge your pattern of activity. Take time off to introspect. Think of something you really want to do and just go out and do it. Life is all about action and not about sitting and brooding over it. Also, get into some form of physical exercise, whether it is playing badminton or simply taking a walk. When you let your adrenaline flow, it all works out. |

Sachin G. S. Paul takes a look at the man beyond his career at the crease. HE has faced fast bowlers with skill but now this man was at the receiving end of a veritable barrage of questions. He is none other than the Master Blaster —Sachin Tendulkar, in the City for the Challenger Series held at the PCA Stadium, Mohali. Attired in his favourite ‘off-the-field-outfit’—jeans and T-shirt—and sipping a soft-drink, he talks of how he dreamt of being a fast bowler for the Indian Cricket Team! It was this aspiration that made him attend the trials at the Chennai-based MRF Pace Foundation, ironically his small stature proved to be a stumbling block then! The turnaround and the sensational journey to cricket stardom sparked off when his brother Ajit made him meet the legendary cricket coach, R. Achrekar. Sachin’s
favourites Cricketing Grounds: Wankhede Stadium and Chennai Stadium He changed schools on his advice, took to relentless practice and the rest, as they say, is history! “I use to bat in four nets at one stretch. Achrekar would place a one rupee coin on top of the stumps and tell the bowlers the coin was theirs if they could get me out. Otherwise, the coin was mine. I still have ten of those coins, I did not lose much,” he laughs. However, its not just cricket that gets his enthusiasm going. Sachin has great admiration for Tennis superstar John McEnroe. He remembers a time when he dressed up as McEnroe to show support sporting a head-band, sweat-band and a tennis racquet. It is not just his game that brings out the devotion in Sachin, for this gentle cricketing legend is a staunch devotee of Sai Baba and Ganpati. He frequently visits temples during the night when it is calm and quiet. He visualizes God in his parents. Religion to him is what his parents have inculcated in him, in his upbringing and in his way of life—evidenced in the way he conducts himself on and off the field — a gentleman cricketer to the core. |
U SHARE your birthday today with ONE can’t help but notice that deep chest and such strong capable shoulders. No wonder, he looks perfectly at home, knocking down a few teeth of the villains. And then come, from this grim-faced gabru, those high-pitched patriotic dialogues in his drawling nasal tone, which he delivers so well with his clinging fists. No wonder, this ‘Punjab da Puttar’, who made his debut as a teenage romantic hero (remember Betaab?), is today better known as jat amla, pagla, deewana, with a patriotic fervour running down his veins. An unmatched cine-idol for any Indian movie buff. It was perhaps due to this action-hero’s magic that when Gadar was released, the masses were so insistent on seeing it ‘abhi isi waqt’, that the cinema management had to hold a special show at 6 am! Ok, so you know that this man has won many awards (including the Best Actor Award for Ghayal, the National Award and the Best Supporting Actor Award for Damini and Lux Zee Cine Award for Gadar). But do you know about his secret passion. So all you Sunny fans out there, send him mithai and maybe, your heart too would find a place in his shopping bag, along with those fancy gadgets! |
