BATHINDA
Poppy husk seized
: The police on Thursday arrested one member of an inter-state gang of drug smugglers and seized 25 gunny bags of poppy husk from his possession. He was arrested near Pathrala village in this district. The accused was identified as Lakhvir Singh. 

HOSHIARPUR
Man arrested
: The police has arrested a proclaimed offender, Massa Singh, a resident of Chitti village. He had been booked by the police in a case under Sections 302, 404, 120-B and 34 of the IPC. 

Liquor seized: The police seized 15 cases of the IMFL near Begumpur, Jandiala, on Friday. The police has arrested Amrik Singh, a resident of Khanpur, under SEctions 61, 1 and 14 of the Excise Act. 

Dowry case: Dilbag Singh, a resident of Gurala, has lodged a complaint with the police that his daughter, Paramjit Kaur, was being tortured for dowry by her husband, Gurdev Singh, a resident of Raipur Phir Bakash, father-in-law Bhajan Singh and mother-in-law Joginder Kaur. The police has arrested Bhajan Singh and Joginder Kaur. Gurdev Singh has absconded. 

KHANNA
Lecture held
: The Youth Services Club, A.S. College Khanna organised a lecture and exhibition on female foeticide on the college complex here on Saturday. Doctor Bawa was the resource person on the occasion. Mr Sanjeev Dhamija, secretary of the college, was also present on the occasion. Dr R.S. Jahanji, Principal of the college, welcomed the guest. Mr. H.L. Behal was the stage Secretary and Mr P.J. Sharma gave the vote of thanks.

Inaugurated: Justice N.K. Sud, Judge, Punjab and Haryana High Court, inaugurated a rotary eyecare centre on the premises of Swami Vivekanand Hospital here on Saturday. Dr Beena Misra was the chief guest while Mr Surendra Seth presided over the function. On the occasion, eye surgery equipment worth more than 9 lakh was donated to the centre.

Arrest of murder accused sought
: Hundreds of people on Thursday met the SSP, Mr L.K. Yadav, and demanded the arrest of the culprits involved in the murder of Mr Dennis, president of the Christian Youth Dara, who was killed about two weeks ago.In a press note issued here on Thursday, the kin of the deceased and members of the Dennis Murder Case Action Committee alleged that the police had not arrested the culprits involved in murder despite their repeated requests. They said the mother and brother of Dennis were eyewitnesses to the cold-blooded murder, which took place on September 1, 2005.

NAWANSHAHR
Poll security
: SSP Arun Pal Singh said in a press note on Friday that elaborate security arrangements had been made to ensure Balachaur civic body poll peacefully on September 18. As many as five polling booths, out of the 14 had been declared sensitive. Four police patrolling parties have been constituted to deal with any untoward situation. 

Rural development: Mr Krishan Kumar, Deputy Commissioner, said in a press note on Friday that a sum of Rs 309.05 lakh is being spent on the rural development under various schemes in the district. A sum of Rs 106.34 lakh is being spent on the construction of community centres in seven villages and 477 pucca latrines had been constructed in eight villages in the district under the rural sanitation programme.

PATHANKOT
De-addiction camp
: The Rotary Club organised a drug de-addiction camp at AB College on Friday. Mr Satwinder Walia and Dr Manish Goyal, president and secretary of the club, respectively, made the children aware of the consequences of drug addiction.

PHAGWARA
Annual Samagam
: Delegates from 275 Sukhmani Sahib Seva Societies from various parts of the country arrived here on Saturday to attend the 32nd All-India annual Samagam organised by Sri Sukhmani Sahib Seva Society, Phagwara 

Six hurt in clash: Six persons — Kuldip Singh, a resident of Khalwaragate, his sons Gagandip Goldy and Amardeep, Umesh Sharma, a BJP Youth wing leader, Karan Sharma and Satpal, residents of Mehligate — were injured in a group clash here on Friday. Police are investigating the matter.

Two arrested: The police has arrested Harish Kumar, a resident of Dhak Khothran, and recovered nine grams of smack from him on Friday. In another incident, the police arrested Satnam Singh of Pasla village and recovered counterfeit currency worth Rs 800 from him

Mohali
Hall inaugurated:
A newly built hall of Jitender Veer Sarvhitkari Model High School in Sector 71 here was inaugurated by Mr Madan Mohan Mittal, a former Food and Supplies Minister of Punjab, on Saturday. A cultural programme was presented by children. An exhibition by tiny tots and a science exhibition were also organised on the occasion. The results of the first academic term were given to the parents. 

PANCHKULA
LIQUOR SEIZED: The CIA staff of the Panchkula police seized 192 bottles of the Officers Choice brand of whisky on Saturday from Kuldip Singh who was trapped at the old Panchkula traffic lights in an operation under the supervision of Inspector Ram Kala. A case has been registered.

BHIWANI
War-widows rally
: The 33-Armed Division of the Army is organising a war-widows rally and Veer Nari Sammelan on September 19 and an ex-servicemen meet on September 20 at Rajput Dharmshala. A spokesman of the Sainik Siksha Board said that during these meetings, free medical camps would be organised for the war widows, ex-servicemen and their dependents.

FATEHABAD
Lectures on spoken English
: The English Literary Society of Manohar Memorial College organised lectures on spoken English here on Friday. Mr Ved Guliani, former head of the English Department, Government PG College, Hisar, exhorted students to use the right pronunciation while speaking English.

REWARI
Two arrested
: The police arrested Joginder, a resident of Dharuhera, and recovered the kidnapped girl of Dharuhera from the residence of a relative of the accused in Bathinda on Thursday. The girl has been restored to her parents in Dharuhera. The accused has been remanded in 14-day judicial custody. The girl’s father, Hukam Chand Bawaria, has now converted the case of abduction to a case of rape and criminal intimidati on after the girl’s medical check-up. In another case of abduction, the police has arrested Hari Ram of Basdoodha village and recovered the kidnapped girl.

1 die in mishap: Davender, a resident of Bhatsana village, died on the spot when his scooter was hit by a school bus near the Housing Board Chowk at Dharuhera on Friday. A case has been registered. 

Hemp seized: The police on Friday seized 2.3 kg of hemp from the residence of Sumer Singh in Garhi village near Kosli. Police have registered a case and arrested Sumer Singh.

SONEPAT
Memorandum
: Gram panchayats of Garhi Bakhtawarpur, Mahendi-pur and Garhi submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner on Friday in protest against the illegal quarrying of sand from the Yamuna, and demanded action against the guilty. In the memorandum, it is alleged that the quarrying was being carried out at gunpoint.

One killed: Bhikaji Thakerey of Mumbai was seriously injured when he jumped from the roof of a double-storey house near the office of the municipal council here on Saturday. He is stated to be in a serious condition. In another incident, Prabhu of Tamil Nadu, was killed on the spot when he fell from a tower at Barauli village on Saturday. The body has been sent for a postmortem examination. — OC
