City in line for world heritage status
Chandigarh, September 17
Chandigarh features among cities in the country that will be placed on the list of applicants for the status of World Heritage City under a project of the World Heritage Centre(WHC) of UNESCO. “The issue has cropped up following a nod from the Ministry of Tourism and Culture saying that Chandigarh be placed on the tentative list of cities in the country that will be forwarded to the WHC.

INTACH attempt to record region’s history

In the last nine months since the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage’s (INTACH) activities in Chandigarh were revived under the helm of its newly appointed convener V.K. Kapoor, former ADGP, Haryana, there has been a concerted effort to instill a sense of social responsibility towards preserving and creating awareness of the heritage of the region.

Being turned out of her house after allegedly resisting her father’s sexual overtures, a 14-year-old girl married her 23-year-old neighbour in Rajiv Colony here. The girl is underage and a student of Class IX at Government Model Senior Secondary School, Mani Majra.

Rain brings down mercury to 25.6ºC
Chandigarh, September 17
Rain lashed Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula today, bringing the maximum temperature down by nearly 8 degrees from yesterday’s 33.4ºC to a cool 25.6ºC. The city woke up to an overcast sky. By 10 am, a drizzle had begun which finally turned into heavy rain that abated once again by 4 pm.

Jharkhand girl rescued
Panchkula, September 17

Tears well up in the eyes of the 18 -year- old girl  as a large group of people, including cops, fire questions at her. Hailing from Dumri Jharapat in Jharkhand, the girl can barely understand Hindi. “ Nahin maloom” is all she answers, before she drifts away into  her cocoon.

Bhuria was not pushed off the train: Railways

In connection with a recent case of a ticketless tribal woman, Bhuria, being allegedly pushed off the moving Chhattisgarh Express near the Jagadhri railway workshop, the Senior Divisional Commercial Manager, Northern Railway (Ambala Division), has said in a statement that a departmental inquiry has established that the victim was travelling without ticket and had slipped off the train. She was not pushed off the moving train, he added.

CTU bus rams into motor cycle; 1 hurt
Chandigarh, September 17
A city resident sustained injuries after a CTU bus rammed into the motor cycle he was riding, in the Industrial Area here. The theft of two vehicles was also reported. The police has also registered a case against the owner of a plot in the Industrial Area on the allegation of electricity theft.

PU Syndicate meets on Sept 24
Chandigarh, September 17
The Panjab University Syndicate, at its meeting on September 24, will discuss the delegation of power of signing cheques to various university officers for better working. It is proposed to raise the amount authorised to the Office Superintendent, Accounts, G and P, OSA, salary I and II, and OSA, E and P I and II, from Rs 10,000 to Rs 25,000.

City to host Asian space contest
Chandigarh, September 17
The city will play host to the second Asian Regional Space Settlement Design Competition to be held in January next year. This was stated by the Chairperson of the local chapter of the Aeronautical Society of India, Wg Cdr D.P. Sabharwal (retd), at a press conference here today. In the event, as many as 2,500 schools from the country and Asia are expected to participate.
The winners will go on to participate in the space settlement design to be held at Kennedy Space Centre, Florida. The registration of teams for the event is already under way.

The University Grants Commission will conduct national eligibility test on December 31, 2005. Giving this information, Prof D.C. Kataria, an educational expert for UGC NET test, said this time also the Aryans Educational and Charitable Trust, an NGO engaged in creating awareness for UGC NET exam in the region, would provide forms and a complete information brochure to students free of cost from today onwards.

Court adjourns defamation case against CM

A local court today adjourned a defamation case filed by the Shiromani Akali Dal(SAD) against the Punjab Chief Minister, Capt Amarinder Singh to December 17. Mr Badal had filed a defamation suit against the Chief Minister for lowering the reputation of the Badal family in the public eye.

‘James’ has velocity

The hi-flying life of Mumbai shot by first-timer director Rohit Jugraj in “James” kindles a hunters’ soul. In all its facets, it is the picturisation of the film which stands out. The contents in “James” are state, but its infusion is fresh. Radhe Narayan (Shereveer Vakil), brother of Shanti Narayan, a politician with underworld links, eyes an upcoming model, Nisha (Nisha Kothari). No Hindu marriages for another two months
The period of navrataras which come twice a year are considered auspicious for any new venture, be it marriage, grah parvesh etc. But this year as per astrologers, the navrataras will not be auspicious, reason being two planets Venus, the house of love, and Jupiter are not in proper placement as per its planetary position.
