Maths costs student his tooth
Slapped by Principal; father files complaint

Chandigarh, September 14
Unable to understand mathematics lessons being taught by his new teacher, when 11-year-old Harjote Singh, a Class V student of St Peter’s School, Sector 37, decided to bring it to the knowledge of the school authorities, little did he realise that he would end up with a slap and a broken tooth. Reacting to the incident, his father called the police and filed a complaint.

Hundreds of people, many of them from Punjab, missed their flight to other countries on Monday night and Tuesday morning as a big traffic jam prevented them from reaching the Indira Gandhi International Airport on time.

Tehelka documents: Court of Inquiry begins

Bomb hoax triggers panic at ISBT
Chandigarh, September 14
Panic gripped the inter-state bus terminus, Sector 17, this morning after a tea stall owner mistook an unclaimed bag for a bomb. After the bag was noticed, the police cordoned off the entire area and called in the bomb disposal squad.

Delimitation panel meeting postponed yet again
Mohali, September 14
A meeting of the delimitation committee, scheduled to be held in the office of the SDM, Mr M.L. Sharma, on September 19 has been postponed indefinitely. This is the fourth time that such a meeting has been postponed.

Mumbai Nabard team meets Rodrigues
Civic amenities in UT discussed
Chandigarh, September 14
A high level team from Nabard, Mumbai, led by the Managing Director, Mr Y.S.P. Thorat, called on Gen (Retd.) S.F. Rodrigues, the Governor of Punjab and UT Administrator, for discussions on upgrading the civic amenities in the city and to develop programmes for the agriculture sector of Punjab.

Power ‘hotline’ for Civil Hospital
Mohali, September 14
The local Civil Hospital has been provided with a power “hotline” by the Punjab State Electricity Board much to the relief of patients. The “hotline” became functional a few days ago and now the hospital would be having 24-hour uninterrupted power supply.

Kusht ashram inmates get Onam feast

The Kerala Sastra Kala Manch celebrated the beginning of Onam, the biggest festival of Kerala, with patients and inmates of the Chandi Kusht Ashram, Sector 47, here today. Onam marks the beginning of the New Year and is also known as the harvest festival.

Kashmiri Pandit Balidan Divas observed
Chandigarh, September 14
A meeting of the executive committee of Kashmiri Sahayak Samaj, Chandigarh, was held today to observe Kashmiri Pandit Balidan Divas, (Martyrs’ Day). On September 14, 1989, a prominent leader of the Kashmiri Pandit Community, Tika Lal Tapiloo, was gunned down in broad daylight by terrorists in Srinagar.

Fresh guidelines for Indian workers going abroad

The Union Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs has issued fresh guidelines for Indian workers undertaking employment abroad. In a communication to the recruiting agents, the ministry has stated that it had been observed that certain emigrants after taking a visit visa applied for emigrant visa.

Thieves decamp with household goods
Chandigarh, September 14
In a daytime incident, thieves decamped with electrical appliances and other household articles from a house in Modern Housing Complex, Mani Majra. The theft of a car and a scooter was also reported during the past 24 hours while two persons were held on the allegations of indulging in eve-teasing.

Woman ‘invites’ media for her suicide bid
Chandigarh, September 14
In a bizarre incident, a woman called up mediapersons this afternoon saying that she was going to commit suicide. Then she “inflicted” injuries on her arms and neck, was admitted to a hospital, from where she ‘fled’.

Rs 2.8 lakh looted
Chandigarh, September 14
After stalking a Panchkula resident coming out of a bank, thieves allegedly broke the side window of his car and escaped with a packet containing over Rs 2.8 lakh this afternoon.

Excise posts: CAT adjourns hearing

The Central Administrative Tribunal today adjourned the case of the filing the posts of member in the Central Board of Excise and Customs till October 3. The case which was scheduled for today, was adjourned as the Union Government did not file its reply.

Experts recreate Ghalib era
Panchkula, September 14
The Haryana Urdu Akademi organised a seminar on Ghalib and his contemporary non-Muslim Urdu writers at the Red Bishop Tourist Complex today. Inaugurating the seminar, Dr A.R. Kidwai, Governor of Haryana, traced the roots of Urdu to Haryana stating that the natives picked up its catchy jargon from Mughal invaders and refined its vernacular temper during the ages.

For AIDS awareness, ‘Haath Se Haath Mila’
Chandigarh, September 14
Taking the HIV/AIDS awareness campaign in India a step forward, the BBC World Service Trust the National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO) and Doordarshan in a pioneering initiative, have roped in famous Bollywood stars and a “yuva star” for their specially designed serial “Haath Se Haath Mila” for generating AIDS awareness.

Shivalik swimmers corner glory

Two local swimmers, Harsimran Kaur and Shruti Sharma of Shivalik Public School, cornered glory by winning top honours in the under-14 and under-19 categories, respectively, in the CBSE North Zone Championship held in Delhi from September 9 to 11.
