4 held for attack on sarpanch

Tribune News Service

Gurgaon, June 19
The police have arrested four, including a former sarpanch of Rathiwastheter near here, out of the 14 accused in connection with an attack on the family of the present sarpanch of the village last Friday. The attack resulted in two deaths.

The Superintendent of Police, Gurgaon, Mr Yogender Nehra, today stated that four of the accused have been sent in police remand and a hunt is on for the other accused.

The former sarpanch, Mr Mam Chand, and the present sarpanch, Mr Sohan Lal, are political rivals in their native village.

In the last panchayat elections, Mr Sohan Lal defeated Mr Mam Chand. This led to bad blood between the two factions and their enmity increased thereafter.

Mr Mam Chand and his accomplices allegedly attacked the present sarpanch’s family while they were engaged in the marriage ceremony of Mr Sohan Lal’s daughter. Guns and knives were allegedly used in the attack. While two, including Mr Bhagirath, son of Mr Sohan Lal, received fatal injuries, some others were also injured in the incident.

Mr Surender, another son of Mr Sohan Lal, then lodged a complaint.

All the accused are said to be residents of the village. Incidentally, the baratis were not attacked.

The incident had taken even before the marriage was solemnised. However, as the elderly members of both the sides intervened, the attackers restrained themselves for a while and the wedding was solemnised. Though Mr Sohan Lal’s son had already died, the family members were not informed of the news lest it should interfere in the nuptials.

The incident has come in for condemnation from various quarters in the village.

Mr Nehra said that the police would soon nab the culprits.

Tribune News Service

Encroachers have made Greenfields Colony, one of the largest residential colonies of Faridabad, their happy hunting-ground.

The trust which manages the colony, has got an FIR lodged against certain persons for allegedly encroaching upon its land worth Rs 3 crore.

The officials of the colony met the senior district officials, including the Deputy Commissioner and the Faridabad SP, to seek their intervention for clearing the encroachers.

It is alleged that some influential persons, including a former minister and a private builder have been involved in this activity.

The land measuring about 713 sq. yards is a part of the prime location, located on Bhadkhal-Surajkund Road, where the rate of land has been around Rs 40,000 sq. yards.

Stress on need to conserve water in urban areas
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, June 19
With growing concern over the steady depletion of underground water reserves, M.R. Morarka-GDC Rural Research Foundation is proposing to take up water conservation initiatives in the urban areas.

A spokesman of the foundation said that proper planning, development, management and optimal utilisation of water resource were important for socio-economic development.

Increased demographic pressure in the urban areas and socio-economic developments have increased the demand for water in the last few decades.

As such, it becomes important to conserve rainwater and recycle wastewater. According to the foundation, over-exploitation of available water resources has increased the cost of water.

Even as the awareness about water conservation is increasing, people are unable to do much because of the unavailability of appropriate technology. Many options of water management, considered unfeasible earlier, are now required to be reassessed for their feasibility.

The spokesman claimed that the Morarka Foundation had been engaged in developing technologies for water conservation for over a decade. They have now developed many technologies for water harvesting, conservation and recycling.

A biotech-based system has also been developed recently for recycling of any wastewater to any desired level of its use.

The foundation believes that water harvesting, conservation and recycling can be made to become entrepreneurial initiatives.

The technology and the solutions developed by the foundation would enable the young unemployed youth to gain economic benefits.

According to the foundation, it is just not enough to put fresh rainwater into the sub-surface unless this sub-surface water helps in recharging groundwater aquifers. If it is not done, the sub-surface water gets lost due to capillary action and atmospheric evaporation.

The need is to make a large portion of the harvested water immediately available for withdrawal almost like an underground water storage tank.

To begin with, the foundation suggests harvesting of water only from pucca surfaces that can be cleaned to avoid any contamination.

For filtration, it will use standard equipment that is easy to use and is maintenance-free.

For transportation, flexible piping systems will be used, that can be installed during the rainy season only and taken off for the rest of the year.

The Morarka Foundation has developed a standard filter design that uses only natural materials, operates on gravitational movement of water and requires very little maintenance.

For the installation of rainwater harvesting systems on turnkey basis, the entrepreneur can be recognised as licensed service providers by the appropriate authorities. The local bodies can also prescribe draft/model agreements for their rainwater harvesting services.

New Delhi, June 19
The New Delhi railway station, which caters to an average of 3 lakhs passengers a day, will soon get a new look and become more user-friendly with its main new building getting ready along with four additional platforms and several state-of-the-art facilities.

To avoid confusion, the new building being constructed at the Ajmeri Gate side of the station, will have separate floors for arrival and departure.

Passengers arriving at the station will be on the ground floor and those departing will enter through the first floor.

Eventually, the building at the Paharganj side will be connected to the new building through an over bridge.

Any information about the arrival and departure of trains and reservation status will be easily accessible with touch screens being installed at all the platforms and the number of reservation counters was also being increased, a senior Northern Railway official said.

Moreover, all the foot over bridges (FOBs) and their entrances will have display boards to save the passengers from the inconvenience of traversing up to the main station lobby for obtaining train information.

An additional foot over bridge is being constructed at the Ajmeri Gate side in continuation of the one at the exit of the Delhi Metro station to facilitate passengers to cross over to the Metro station or return. This bridge will be disabled-friendly, the officials said.

Special attention would be paid to maintaining cleanliness at the station. For this, a fully-mechanised cleaning system has been acquired. There are plans to construct state-of-the-art toilets at platforms with a nominal charge for their use.

Token strike by petrol pump owners
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, June 19
Petrol pumps in the Capital will remain closed from midnight tonight to protest the ‘non-implementation’ of the accord signed between them and the government nearly four years back.

As a result of the call, there was considerable rush at the petrol pumps even on a Sunday and despite the heat, as motorists wanted to have enough petrol to last them for the next 24 hours.

However, there was little panic as most realised that it was only a one-day token strike.

The petroleum dealers here have also threatened to go on an indefinite strike from July 18 if the government fails to implement the accord and enhance their commission from the prevailing 1.59 per cent to 5.0 per cent by then.

The ‘accord’ is actually the point of discord, which has forced us to go on a day’s strike as a sign of protest for not implementing the terms and conditions reached in August 2001, said Delhi Petrol Dealers Association president Saran Sarna.

‘’If today’s one-day ‘token strike’ fails to move the government, we’ll be going on an indefinite strike from the 18th of next month to force the government to respect the pact it made with us,’’ he said.

“Today’s strike is a warning call on our two-point demand – the ‘non-implementation’ of the deal from which the government was backtracking and the increase in commission percentage from present 1.59 per cent to 5.0 per cent. Besides, being forced to bear with the unjust moves of the government like exorbitant fines of Rs 10,000 for unclean toilets and faulty air gauge, we have taken the extreme step,” he said.

‘’We just want the government to honour its word on the accord. Regarding increasing commission we can give it a grace period of few months but at least the move should be made,’’ said Sarna.

BJP threatens stir over proposed hike in power tariff

New Delhi, June 19
The BJP today threatened to oppose the proposal of the Delhi State Electricity Board to increase the power tariff from July 1. Warning the Delhi Government and the private power companies, the BJP threatened to organise dharnas and block traffic in the Capital if the decision was implemented.

The Delhi BJP chief, Dr Harsh Vardhan, alleged that this arbitrary decision has been taken in connivance with the Delhi Government led by the Congress party. He said the Electricity Regulatory Commission was doing injustice to the public by favouring the private power companies.

In the meeting with the activists, the BJP president suggested that the Regulatory Commission should be a multi-member commission like the Election Commission, so that one person cannot take such arbitrary decision. — TNS

“Music is sound, but sound can be used in such a way that it creates silence”. This is how Osho had once described music. The five new albums of ‘New Age’ music, launched by Music Today in association with New Earth Records, have this very ability – an ability to touch something deep in the spirit, the ability to ease tension, the ability to calm the body and the mind and at the same time an ability to stimulate the subtle senses.

The albums, ‘Lotus Path’ by James Asher, ‘Budha Garden’ by Parijat, ‘Yoga Harmony’ by Terry Oldfield, ‘Reiki Essence’ by Anuvida and Nyk Tyndall and ‘Nada Himalaya –2’ by Deuter are a meditative music delight. A must for all those who believe in destressing to maintain one’s equilibrium amids the stress and strain of modern-day urban living.

‘Life in Frames’

Involved in the difficult act of balancing a dozen-odd small tea glasses one above the other with his small, tender hands, the photograph of a frail figure of a child at a roadside dhaba graphically depicts the plight of lakhs of children forced into working for livelihood in the country.

This photograph is one of the exhibits in an all black and white photo exhibition, ‘’Life in Frames’’, organised in the Capital by Bachpan Bachao Andolan, an NGO working for child rights, and the students of the Jamia Millia University here at the Travancore House here. The exhibition is on till June 30.

Another photograph shows a child engaged in making a football, bringing out the irony that at his age the child should be enjoying a game of the foot ball rather than toiling to make it. Some of the photographs of children engaged in difficult tasks very effectively bring out the pathos in their bleak and miserable existence.

The photographs, shot in the Capital and at Bhadoi and Aligarh in Uttar Pradesh where thousands of children are employed in various industries like lock-making and carpet weaving, depict the plight of working children, their drudgery and above all their unfortunate existence where they have to sacrifice their childhood to help supplement their families’ income. The photographs leave a lasting impression on the psyche of the viewers.

“I have chosen to portray my pictures in black and white because it goes with the kind of life these children are leading,’’ says Kashif Ali, first year student in post graduate course in mass media at Jamia Millia Islamia, who is one of the participants in the exhibition.

On his choice of subject, he said child labour was his research subject in first year after which he decided to sensitise people on the issue.

Urban life in focus

The Visual Art Gallery here is also presenting an exhibition of photographs of Sandeep Singh entitled “Silence”. The photographs attempt to reveal the human aspect in the modern, urban concrete jungles. The exhibition is on till June 23.

‘Women as a Metaphor’

The Inderprastha Gallery here is showcasing the works of several women artists, which view “Women as a Metaphor”. The exhibition is open for public viewing till June 30. Among the artists whose works are being showcased are Preeti Verma, Chitra Singh, Hena Chakraborty, Mamta Mathur and Rachna Mohan. The paintings attempt to present the female form as a metaphor of nature, power, humanity and strength.

‘Mercury Rising’ at Visual Art Gallery

The Visual Art Gallery at the India Habitat Centre here will host the third ‘Navsar Show’ by exhibiting the paintings, sculptures, graphics and installations of nine artists from the College of Art here from July 1 to July 4. Being a summer show this year, it has been appropriately christened “ Mercury Rising”.

Navsar, which literally means a garland of nine strings, was started in February 2003. The second Navsar was held in the following year, this being the third. The idea behind it is that every year nine new artists are given an opportunity to display their works so that they get a start in their artistic careers. It also provides a common meeting ground for artists from different cultures and fields.
