Law institute case: UT’s review plea dismissed

In a severe setback to the UT Administration in its efforts to stall the implementation of the Punjab and Haryana High Court judgement in the Chandigarh Law Institute case, the High Court has dismissed an application of the UT Administration, which sought a review.

The results of the CBSE’s All India Senior School Certificate Examination (Class XII) will be declared tomorrow at 8 am. After the grills on the central verges of various roads here went missing, it is now the turn of grills on the boundary walls of green spaces and parks to disappear. These grills were installed to protect the green areas from stray cattle menace and their removal by stealth is causing concern.

Artistes protest against Tagore Theatre officials
Chandigarh, May 22
A day after Chandigarh Tribune highlighted how Tagore Theatre was being let out to two parties on the same day, several theatre artistes from the region held a massive agitation against those responsible for the mess. Gathering on the theatre premises around 9 am today, about 50 theatre directors raised slogans against the UT Chief Engineer and the XEN concerned who have been allowing the practice to go on unabated.

Cars, scooter damaged in fire
Chandigarh, May 22

Two cars and a scooter were charred here today morning in a fire that broke out in the basement parking of Pushpak Society in Sector 49. The fire gravely damaged an Esteem (CH-03M-0373), a Maruti 800 (DL-3CF-7349) and an Activa scooter (CH-O3S-1796). At least two more vehicles suffered partial damage.

Labourer crushed to death
Chandigarh, May 22
A 22-year-old labourer from Rajasthan, riding a bicycle, was allegedly crushed to death by a truck at the Transport Light Point, this evening. The accident brought the traffic to a standstill at the Transport Light Point.

BVP comes to aid of poor students

The Bharat Vikas Parishad today distributed aid among more than 450 poor children. It provided each child with a school bag, books, copies and stationery in addition to uniforms and shoes.

GCM not open to girls for undergraduate courses
Chandigarh, May 22
It’s still a long way for undergraduate girl students to find their way into Government College, for Men Sector 11. The move to create 25 seats in four-year course of Bachelor of Physical Education (BPEd) for girl students at the college has been thwarted by the UT Education Department. Instead the additional seats would be now created for boys in the forthcoming academic session.

Dental education programme ends
Panchkula, May 22
The first continuing dental education (CDE) programme conducted by Dentis-Tree, the dental education centre here has been successfully completed. About 50 dentists from Chandigarh and surrounding areas participated in the programme. Addressing mediapersons here today, Dr Sanjay Kalra and Mr Sanjeev Sagar, Directors of the centre, said the programme on ‘Dentistry in 21 st Century’ was conducted by Dr Omer Reed from Phoneix, Arizona, USA, Dr Peter Andrews and Dr Ken Newman.

A valedictory function was held at Government Senior Secondary School, Sector 45, here at the conclusion of a 15-day workshop on handmade greeting cards. Sandeep records win in snooker meet

Second seed Sandeep Dugal stream rolled Amit Jain 42-50, 82-59, 75-45 in the first round of the best of three frame snooker tie in the 5th Saurabh Khattar Memorial Billiards and Snooker Championship at Chandigarh Club, here today. Vineet Khosla thrashed Mahesh Chawdhary 31-35, 47-9, 50-12. Rajneesh Bhutani could not meet the challenge posed by Akhay Goel and lost the game 41-43, 60-45, 43-18.
In another tie, Suresh Chaudhary routed Anant Chibber in a one-sided affair 48-20, 50-18. G.B. Singh beat Ajay Gupta and the score stood at 45-13,50-40.

Minerva Academy thrashed Punjab and Haryana High Court XI by 110 runs to storm into the final of the UT League Cricket Tournament at cricket stadium, Sector 16, here today. In another semifinal, DAV Coaching Centre, Sector 8, beat ICL XI by 66 runs.
