Rs 4.06 lakh looted from bank
Mandi Ahmedgarh, May 18
Three unidentified armed miscreants robbed Rs 4.06 lakh and two rifles from the Kanganwal branch of the Punjab National Bank, but swift and coordinated action by the Sangrur and Jagraon police made them abandon the car and the guns at a deserted place near Maherna village today.

No trace of missing youth
Mandi Ahmedgarh, May 18
The Jagraon police is yet to identify the anonymous caller who had rung up the family of a youth of Ghuman village in Ludhiana district who had been missing under mysterious circumstances since April 25 when he had left for Chandigarh on his motor cycle.

Girl dies in wall collapse
Khanna, May 18

A girl student of Holy Heart Public School died, while her sister received injuries, when a boundary wall of a shop collapsed and the debris hit the students who were going to the school at the local Laheri road today morning. A third girl accompanying them escaped unhurt.

20 vehicles catch fire
Ludhiana, May 18

More than 20 impounded vehicles caught fire under mysterious circumstances outside the traffic police office situated in the local Police Lines today. However, a major tragedy was averted as the fire was controlled timely.

Sewadar held for rape bid
Khanna, May 18
The police arrested Om Nath, a sewadar of Dera Chobdaran, for allegedly trying to rape a married woman, here today. According to the police, Kamaljit Kaur, a resident of Uttam Nagar locality, had complained that she was a follower of Sant of Dera Chobdaran.

CM urged to get Rajasansi airport upgraded
Ludhiana, May 18
Mr N.S. Nanda, president, Hotel and Restaurant Association of Punjab, has congratulated Capt Amarinder Singh, Chief Minister, and Mr Jagmohan Singh Kang, Tourism Minister, on the resumption of Air India, New Delhi-Amritsar-Toronto flight after about 20 years. He said it was a long pending demand of the Indians residing in Canada, which would now give a boost to tourism in the state.

Labour-management deadlock continues
Ludhiana, May 18
The impasse between the workers and management of KW Rims India, KW Engineering Works and Wasan Engineering Corporation continued and the meeting that was scheduled to be conducted at Labour Office here today, was postponed as the management expressed fear that the workers could get violent. The management demanded that the meeting be conducted at a neutral place.

Reliance Infocomm today introduced two zero rental plans, New Joy 299 ZR and New Joy 649 ZR. According to the company, the benefit in these plans is that subscribers get free intra-circle calls worth entire monthly rental making them virtually zero-rental. CLIP and Plan charges of Rs25 each apply like they do to all Joy plans of Reliance.

The Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) formally launched its broadband service in the city here yesterday to mark World Telecommunication Day.

13-year-old authors puzzle book
Ludhiana, May 18
A Class IX student of Sacred Heart Convent Senior Secondary School has written a book of puzzles titled, ‘Brain Storming Puzzles’. In the preface of the book, Tushar Gupta (13), the author of the book writes, “My book ‘Brain Storming Puzzles’ is my endeavour to provide readers with hours of fun and excitement. The book has over 120 original brain teasing puzzles.” The book was released by the Principal of the school, Sister Maria Lena, in a special ‘morning assembly’ held in the school this morning. The Principal congratulated Tushar for his unique effort and has given him permission to put up a stall to sell his book on May 21 on the occasion of parents teachers’ meet in the school.

Farewell organised by DIMT students
Ludhiana, May 18
‘Sayonara,’ a farewell party, was organised by the students of MBA, BCA and PGDCA of the Doraha Institute of Management and Technology (DIMT) to bid farewell to their seniors. On the occasion, a cultural programme was presented by the students.

Calligraphy contest results

English calligraphy competition was held at Baba Ishar Singh Senior Secondary Public School, BRS Nagar, Ludhiana, yesterday. Students from classes from I to XII participated in the contest. Mission to boost Indo-African art ties

Ms Karuna Mohindra, an eminent artist, will be leaving for a two-week trip on May 22, to the East African nations of Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania, to promote co-operation between India and these countries, in the field of different forms of fine arts like painting, sculpture and applied arts.

‘Change lifestyle, food habits to prevent heart disease’

In a bid to create awareness among the people about cardiac disease and to shed myths related to heart surgery, the Hero DMC Heart Institute (HDHI) has launched a concerted rive. In the first phase, a public health lecture was organised on ‘prevention and cure of cardiac disease’ in the BSNL Colony at BRS Nagar here yesterday which was attended by nearly 200 residents.

Punjab cagers for junior nationals
Ludhiana, May 18
Gurbaj Singh of Baba Lodhiana Academy and Kiranjeet Kaur, also of the same academy were named captains of the Punjab boys and girls teams respectively, which will take part in the 56th Junior National Basketball Championship to be held from May 21 to 28 at Pondicherry.

Talented players turn up for trials
Ludhiana, May 18
More than 50 male players turned up to attend trials conducted at Guru Nanak Stadium here today by the Punjab Sports Department. The trials were held in three disciplines — athletics, hockey and wrestling — to enrol players with the Speed Fund Academy being run here by the department. They will be given training-cum coaching by experts of repute to prepare them for international meets.
