Varsity function
: The second phase of the Inter-Departmental Cultural competitions (JASHAN-2005), Guru Nanak Dev University, will begin from Saturday. More than 500 student will take part.

Hindi seminar: A one-day National Seminar on "Changing prospects Hindi literature" will be held by the Hindi Department of Guru Nanak Dev University here on April 29. Dr Kunwar Pal Singh from Aligarh (UP) would deliver the keynote address.

Pak national held: The Customs officials have arrested Pakistan national Rehmat Khan for allegedly possessing stag horns. He was to board Samjhauta Express. A case has been registered Sections 39, 44 and 51 of the Wild Life Protection Act.

Amloh
ECONOMIC CENSUS: As many as 75 supervisors for rural’ urban areas of Amloh and 68 supervisors for Mandi Gobindgarh Area of the Amloh sub-division have been appointed to conduct the fifth economic census to be held in April and May, said Mr Sandeep Hans, Sub-divisional Magistrate, Amloh, on Friday. The Block Development and Panchayat Officer, Amloh, Executive Officers of Amloh and Mandi Gobindgarh will look after the rural and urban areas, respectively whereas the SDM will be the overall incharge of the subdivision.

ANNIVERSARY: The 4th death anniversary of freedom fighter and the founder member of the Praja Mandal Movement, Sahib Singh Salana, will be held at his native village, Salana, on March 28. The flag will be unfurled and revolutionary play will be presented at the conference which would be addressed by Mr Chander Shekhar, member, scretariate, and Mr Sukhdev Singh Bari, member of the state committee.

Accident:
Mohinder Singh (60) of Khudda died on the spot when a truck (PB-10 F-9969) hit his Kinetic Honda scooter (PB-21A-8650) near Mona Mour village on Wednesday evening. The Tanda police has registered a case.

Ludhiana
FUNCTION: The Uttranchal Kumaon Vikas Parishad Ludhiana, will organise its 5th annual cultural function at Arya College on Sunday. Famous folk singers of Kumaon region: Hira Singh, Mawan Singh Rawart and Shivpant, would be bringing their dancing troupe from Delhi. Mr Sharanjit Singh Dhillon, MP, will be chief guest on the occasion.

RECONSTITUTED: Aakrosh’s, a society for the promotion of literature and cultural activities, executive has been reconstituted to ensure its active participation in literary and cultural activities. It was unanimously decided to give the responsibilities of President to Dr Gursharan Singh Randhawa who is presently working as Professor and Head of the Biotechnology Department at Indian Institute of Technology at Roorkee. Dr Jagdish has been given the responsibilities of secretary, Dr Rakesh Raman of vice-president and Mrs Amarjit Kaur of joint secretary. Dr Sukhchain will work as convener and will be responsible for running the day to day activities of the organisation. 

MANDI AHMEDGARH
MEETING: A meeting of the heads of various educational institutes of this town and surrounding villages was held at Mahatama Gandhi Memorial National Senior Secondary School on Thursday. Mr Mangat Ram Jain, president of the Ahmedgarh Vidya Parccharak Sabha, chaired the meeting and Mr Harinder Singh, SHO, was the chief guest. Besides discussing other problems related with the normal functioning of the institutes, various speakers expressed concern about the security of the students and teachers.

WORKSHOP: A three-day teaching workshop that was inaugurated by Ms Usha Sidhu, Principal, in-service training Secondary School, Ludhiana, concluded at Government Senior Secondary School Dehlon, on Thursday. In her keynote address Ms Sidhu emphasised the need of training of in-service teachers for up-to-date awareness about various subjects being in the schools. Mr Prem Nath Sharma, convener of programme elaborated various avenues of the Sarav Sikhya Abhyan.

MACHHIWARA
TRIBUTES PAID: Tributes were paid to Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev on their 74th martyrdom day. To salute the great sons of India, a shardhanjali samaroh was organised on the premises of local Shaheed Bhagat Singh Public High School. All students took a pledge to follow the path shown by great martyrs. Mr D.L. Jain, Manager of the school, urged the Kocher Community to inculcate spirit of we feeling and patriotism in the students.

Nominated: Mr Parmdeep Singh Bhabat, president of the Disabled Persons Welfare Organisation, Punjab, has been nominated as the non-official member of the State Blood Transfusion Council by the Punjab State AIDS Control Society, according to a press note.

Camp: As many as 75 persons donated blood at a blood donation camp organised by the Puravanchal Vikas Mahsangh here on Wednesday. UT Home Secretary, Krishan Mohan, was the chef guest.

NOVEL HOLI: A meeting of Agarwal Pariwar Sangathan on Friday decided to play Holi with flowers to play instead of colours.

BLOOD CAMP: Nearly 67 persons donated blood at a camp organised by the NSS unit of Government College of Education, Sector 20 on Thursday. Mr DS Mangat, PCS, DPI (colleges), Chandigarh Administration was the chief guest and he urged the teachers to join hands with parents and society to rebuild the healthy social fabric.

OPENED: Levi Strauss (India) Private has opened a new store at Sector 17. Mr Venkatramani, Marketing Director, Levi Strauss India said, “The store will display the latest international trends in denim and casual wear.”

School Function
: The annual prize distribution function of the local Dayaram Public School was organised here on Thursday. Mr Dura Ram, local Congress MLA, was the chief guest Dr K.K. Arora, principal, M.M. College, Fatehabad, Mr Prahlad Singh Gillankhera, Mr Gulbahar Singh and Mr Krishan Rohaz were present. The school Director, Mr H.P. Heyer, said the school had started several vocational courses.

Manjeet a resident of Beri village, died when a truck hit his motorcycle near Police Lines on the Bahadurgarh road here on Wednesday night. According to information, the deceased was going to his village along with a relative.

Senior scientist of Haryana Agricultural University (HAU) Prof Kuldeep Singh Dhindsa has been selected for Vijay Shree Award of the India International Friendship Society. The award will be presented at a conference on “Economic growth and national integration to be organised by the society in New Delhi on  April 28.
