Break engagement, orders panchayat
Satish Seth

Kaithal, October 25
Close on the heels of a diktat issued by a panchayat of Asanda village directing a couple to break their marriage and live like brother and sister, the Lohan khap panchayat has directed two families to break engagement of Satyajeet Kadyan of Jakholi village, Kaithal district, and a girl of the Lohan gotra of Ramra Bhain village in Jind district.

Agitated over this decision of the Lohan khap, representatives of various communities of Jakholi have reportedly decided to resort to social boycott of Lohan families living in the village.

According to reports, the engagement ceremony of Satyajeet, son of Dr Randhir Kadiyan, who is at present serving in Kuwait, and Pinki, daughter of Partap Singh Lohan of Ramra Bhain village was held recently.

However, a panchayat of the Lohan gotra objected to this relationship between the two communities on the ground that some Lohan families were already living at Jakholi hence daughter of the Lohans should not be married in Jakholi village.

It was learnt that the Kadyans had taken a tough stand on this issue and refused to follow the decision of the panchayat.

Mr Mani Ram Kadiyan, grandfather of Satyajeet, said families of 18 gotras from the Jat community lived in their village and if people of every gotra objected to such type of relationship no resident of the village could get married.

He called for immediate withdrawal of the diktat issued by the Lohan khap panchayat in the interest of maintaining peace in the villages.

It was learnt that next panchayat of the Lohan khap to discuss the matter will be held on October 31 at Bhain village.
