NSG inspects junk for rocket shells
New Delhi, October 7 According to DCP South Pravir Ranjan, “We have covered the entire area by deploying sufficient police force. During the inspection, nothing hazardous was found in the containers.” He said that the NSG would be able to check all the containers by tomorrow. Although nothing definite could be said as of now, he could not rule out the possibility of more live rocket shells being unearthed in the containers. These containers were bound for Bhushan Steel in Ghaziabad. Meanwhile, a senior official in Ministry of Home Affairs has said that the explosion of live rockets shells was a clear example of negligence at the part of Iranian and Indian authorities. He said that such incidents could
recur unless the government takes a decision not to import any
ammunition material in any form – neither active nor diffused. The imported material could not be thoroughly checked. The checking at the airport was at best random. Bhushan Steels had been importing diffused shells for a long time, but nothing untoward had happened till September 30, when one of the live shells exploded, killing ten employees of the factory. This suggests that there was mutual trust between Bhushan Steel and its counterpart in Iran, which was breached by the Iranian authorities. The official further said that if any company wants to still import such hazardous material, then it must set up a unit for defusing the shells.
Experts begin checking scrap trucks in S Delhi
Explosives experts today began scouring through the metal scrap in the nine trucks detained in South Delhi on suspicion of containing bombs. The experts from National Security Guard (NSG) started examining the scrap in the trucks parked at an isolated place in Okhla area of the city
since Tuesday, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South District) Praveer Ranjan said. The trucks were destined for Bhushan Steel Factory in Ghaziabad where an explosion killed 10 persons and injured eight. At least 50 more shells of bombs and rockets have been recovered from the rest of the scrap there. The trucks had left from Container Corporation of India (CCI) depot near Okhla when the police intercepted the vehicles on suspicion that they might contain explosives in the wake of last week’s blast in the steel factory. At least 10 more trucks carrying the iron scrap have been detained at Tughlakabad Inland Container Depot for the last six days, but its consignment is yet to be checked. |
Justify hike in cost of industrial plots: HC
New Delhi, October 7 Justice C. K. Mahajan directed the state government and DSIDC to respond within three weeks while ordering the authorities to charge Rs 4,200 per square metre as an interim measure. The judge had issued notice on a petition filed by about 150 owners of such industrial units, filed through counsel Sugriva Dubey, claiming that cost of industrial plots on the city’s outskirts in Narela and Bawana had more than doubled since the time a scheme was devised in 1998 to move industries from non-confining areas in the Capital in accordance with the apex court’s 1995 directive. It was alleged that provisions, including constitution of a Price Fixation Committee, of the Delhi Nazrul Land Disposal Act and Rules had not been followed in fixing the escalated price. The price had initially been fixed at Rs 3,000 per sq mts in 1998, then increased to Rs 5,400 per sq mts in April 2004 and further raised to Rs 7,776 per sq mts in the same month, the petition added. The Supreme Court had directed that about 50,000 industrial units should be shifted out of the non-confirming areas in Delhi by July 2004. However, the Delhi Government sought extension of the deadline after industries in the city went on strike in August on the issue.
Prodded by HC, cops register FIR against IMD DG
The Delhi High Court has disposed of a plea seeking registration of an FIR against the Director General of the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), Mr S. K. Srivastava, for allegedly sexually assaulting a 30-year-old woman. Justice R. C. Chopra disposed of the petition filed by a woman’s organisation in view of the police registering an FIR in this regard. The city police has informed the judge that the matter was being investigated. In August, the court had issued a notice on a petition filed by Ms Kusum Sehgal, alleging that the police had not registered an FIR despite complaints in two police stations (Lodhi Road and R. K. Puram) and representations to senior police officers. The petition had also sought that the case be transferred to the CBI, but that prayer was not pressed by the petitioner. Earlier, the High Court had granted interim anticipatory bail to Srivastava till December six and directed him to co-operate with the police in their investigation. |

The CBI laid a trap on November 29, 1996 and caught Yamin red-handed accepting the bribe amount in the hotel.

Proper authorisation needed in kidney transplant cases
New Delhi, October 7 The Chairman of the DMA, Dr Prem Aggarwal, has said that kidney donation as well as transplantation services for patients of renal failure was governed by the Transplantation of Human Organs Act, 1994. Under the Act, the Central Government and the State Government should appoint an appropriate authority for en forcing the standards and governing and monitoring the authorisation committee. He said that under authorisation, the doctor has to furnish his photograph, identification number, driving license and passport. The photo has to be attested by the Superintendent of Police or the Deputy Commissioner of Police. The donor also has to submit an authorisation from the guardian or his wife. The donor has to present an agreement with the patient on an affidavit attested by a Sub Divisional Magistrate and psychiatrist. The evaluation of the donor is also necessary. In fact, without the active participation of the donor and the donee, the authorisation committee procedure can never be successfully completed. Now, in this situation there are more than 300,000 patients who are either suffering from end stage chronic renal failure and require donation of kidneys to survive, or are condemned to life-long dialysis. These desperate patients require kidneys which no relatives are ready to donate. However, certain people desperate for money sold their kidneys to such patients. These people pose to be relatives of the patients and charge a hefty amount of money. A middleman is generally involved. After operation, they again try to extract money from the patient. Action should be taken in such cases, Dr. Prem Aggarwal pointed out. The Apollo Hospitals Group today claimed to have followed the global guidelines while performing transplants. In fact, the efforts towards continuous improvement had led Apollo Hospital to adopt stricter guidelines for transplantation, more than required under law. |
3 factory hands missing with 99 kg silver
Noida, October 7 The trio had abandoned the company’s Scorpio jeep in Sector-37, Noida. A police team had raided a place in Delhi, but the accused managed to escape. According to police, silver is manufactured in APPL factory in Noida Phase-II. A consignment of 99 kg silver was placed in the factory’s jeep. Normally all consignments are checked at CWC gate before being permitted to go out of factory premises. But on October 3, the vehicle was driven out from Gate No. 4 instead of CWC gate with the accused Amit, BK Pathak and Sunil, driving straight to Sector-37 Noida. Here they abandoned the factory Scorpio and fled in another vehicle. When the management came to know that the vehicle had not passed through CWC gate, it was thought to be an unintentional lapse. But when the people in Delhi informed the factory management that nobody had reached them with the consignment, the fraud was realised. The police were informed, who put a team to investigate the matter. The jeep was found in Sector-37 late at night. The hideout of the accused was raided in Delhi, but they sped away in a vehicle on seeing the policemen. The police are trying to nab the accused who reportedly have some links in Agra also. |

Two held for selling food meant for schoolkids
Faridabad, October 7 The accused were caught red-handed by a special team deputed by the Chief Minister’s office, while off-loading the food material at Subhash Colony of Ballabhgarh town here at about 9 pm. According to reports, the team of the officials, which had prior information about the activity, had started following a Tata-407 vehicle from Kheri Pul area and conducted the raid while the main accused, who is a salesman in the Confed office here, was delivering about eight bags of rice and soya bean cereal at a private flour shop (chakki), owned by one Balbir at Subhash Colony. It is learnt that the food items were meant to be distributed to at least three primary schools in the district, but it is alleged that the employee managed to divert these bags to be sold in the open market, and perhaps this was not the first time that the food material meant for the schoolkids had found way to the market. The police have booked the accused under Section 409, 420 of the IPC and 7-10-55 of the Essential Commodities Act. The raiding team included the officials of the food and supply and the police. There are about 595 primary schools in the district and all these schools get a supply of food items like gram, daliya (half crush wheat), soya bean, rice and similar cereals. The children get a meal daily in the school, which is normally prepared on the school premises the same day. However, complaints of irregularities including diversion of these items to the market and ‘consumption’ by the teaching and non-teaching staff have also been surfacing from time to time. The food items are supplied by the Confed office in each district, to the schools concerned after regular intervals. |
