New Delhi, September 28
A city court has sentenced a vegetable vendor to rigorous imprisonment for 14 years for forcing his wife to commit suicide by torturing her for dowry. The convict, Ram Gopal, is a resident of Etawa in Uttar Pradesh.

The court has also imposed a fine of Rs 2,000 on Ram Gopal, who forced 21-year-old Mamta to burn herself to death within two years of marriage at their Raghubir Nagar house. The police had recovered the charred body of Mamta, who had married Ram Gopal in December 1998, from the house on May 25, 2000, a day after her death.

The judge observed that the accused had harassed the deceased to such an extent that she felt that painful end to life by burning herself was preferable to the pain inflicted by
her husband.

Mahesh, the father of the deceased and the complainant in the case, told the court that Ram Gopal and his family had been demanding gold ornaments, a TV, a ceiling fan and a scooter. The court, however, acquitted the father of the accused for lack of evidence.

Two women among three held for currency racket
Bijendra Ahlawat
Tribune News Service

Faridabad, September 28
Three persons, including two women were held here yesterday for running a currency racket. About 20 fake notes of Rs 1,000 denomination were recovered from them.

The racket seems to be operating in the district with inter-state links. The arrest of three persons points to the deep-rooted problem.

There have been about half a dozen cases reported in the past about four years, in which some persons had been caught trying to circulate the currency in the district.

The latest incident is reported to be the second that has surfaced this year. The bank officials had detected some fake notes about four months ago when someone had deposited the amount in the branch of a nationalised bank here. However, the accused in this case could not be identified. Two such cases had also been detected last year and some persons arrested.

However, the police authorities got an information about a couple and their close relative, who had come from New Delhi to get the real notes in lieu of the fake ones.

The accused identified as Puneet Gupta, his wife Sonia and his sister-in-law Monica, came here in a car to circulate the money. It is reported that while they had been able to get the exchange of some of the notes of Rs 1,000 denomination, they were arrested from Nehru Ground with the car, a mobile phone and about 20 notes of Rs 1,000 each.

It is reported that this was perhaps the first time that fake notes of Rs 1,000 denomination have been recovered in the town. The police suspect that the cash worth Rs 26,400 could have been exchanged with the fake ones.

It is revealed that the accused had got the fake money from one Ved Prakash, a resident of Bihar. The accused told the police that they were residents of Mehrauli. They had reportedly brought currency worth Rs 50,000. The banks here reported to have detected fake currency notes of Rs 500 and Rs 100 on various occasions in the recent years.

A PDS office bereft of basic amenities
Nalini Ranjan

New Delhi, September 28
A Public Distribution System (PDS) office located at Jagatpuri in the East Delhi area, catering to the needs of at least two lakh residents, has been functional for years without basic civic amenities like drinking water, electricity and toilet. The electricity connection of the office was disconnected after it failed to pay its electricity bills.

“The office is running from a rented building, which lacks basis civic amenities. Due to the non-payment of outstanding bills, the electricity supply has been disconnected. Moreover, the building is such that very little sunlight enters the rooms. As such, we are forced to work in candlelight. For drinking water, we have to go to the nearby houses,” said an employee of the office.

He traced the problem to the ongoing “political turf war” between the local high-profile MLA, Dr Harshvardhan, and the Congress Councillor of the area, Chaudhary Prem Singh.

It was pointed out that while the councillor wanted to shift the office to another building, the BJP chief has objected to the move on the ground that the new office would cause inconvenience to the local residents.

A social worker and the President of the ‘Bhrastachar Nirodhak Morcha,’ Mr Narendar Kumar Singh, alleged that even though the office has seven employees, including one Additional Food and Supply Officer and two Food and Supply Inspectors, the office is deserted even during peak office hours.

“We have complained a number of times regarding the unavailability of the senior officials to the public representatives of this area. However, no action has been taken so far,” he alleged.

According to him, the officers refuse to sit in their offices in view of the lack of basic civic amenities.

When Dr Harshvardhan was contacted in this regard, he said he was trying to improve the condition of the office and sought the help and support from the general public.

‘Mirror of Friendship’ to zero in on Indo-Hungarian lensmen
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, September 28
The rich and diverse Indo-Hungarian cultural heritage has inspired many eminent as well as amateur artists to create exquisite art. It is not difficult for a Hungarian artist to fall in love with the wonders of India. As for Indian artists, many of them have been strongly influenced by the Hungarian art forms, since the times of Amrita Shergil.

The Hungarian Cultural Centre plans to capture the essence of this cultural relationship through the works of two such enthusiastic art lovers and photographers.

On October 5, 2004, the Centre inaugurates an exhibition of photographs titled ‘Mirror of Friendship’, which presents the works of two art contemporaries — Istvan Pusztahazi (from Hungary), and Dr Pradip Chaudhari (from India). The two photographers have tried to capture beautiful images of each other’s country through the lenses of their cameras..

Istvan Pusztahazi is the Director of Chancery at the Embassy of Republic of Hungary. At the age of 14, Istvan Pusztahazi learnt from his father the art of preserving the cherished moments of life. And now, beyond 50, he still holds fast to his father’s advice, with an eye at the camera’s lens and fingers on its button.

The Hungarian lensman is hopeful that someday, he will enter the Guinness Book of World Records for having visited the Taj Mahal the maximum number of times as a tourist. Back home, after completing his first term in India, he organised seven exhibitions of photographs in India.

In 2002, he showcased his own country’s world heritage sites in an exhibition titled ‘Wonders of Hungary’, which was organized at the Hungarian Cultural Centre. Presently, he is on his second term in India, and is overwhelmed by the feelings of returning to his country of dreams, and of capturing some more exotic sights of this land.

Dr Pradip Chaudhari is a veterinarian and a biomedical scientist at the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai. He visited Hungary for the first time in 2001, in relation to a one-year training programme as a BOYSCAST (Better Opportunities for Young Scientist in chosen Areas of Science & Technology) Fellow at Frederic Joliot-Curie National Research Institute of Radiobiology and Radiohygiene, Budapest. At that time, he did not know that in addition to an academic feast in the land of Nobel laureates, he would also fall for the rich cultural treasure of Hungary. With his penchant for photography, which is more than a hobby for him, he has attempted to capture the picturesque beauty of Hungary from the eye of his camera. This is the first exhibition of his photographs, and expresses the colourful bouquet of Hungary’s culture through the eyes of an Indian.

He dedicates this great event to his grandpa, who has enriched his childhood.

Medicos bemoan rise in water tariff
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, September 28
The Chairman of the DMA Nursing Home and Medical Establishment Forum, Dr Prem Aggarwal, expressed concern over the recent increase in water tariff for private medical establishments at the rate of non-residential category–III.

He said that the private medical practitioners were the backbone of health services in the Capital and catering to more than 85 per cent of the total health services.

As per a recent survey of the Delhi Government, it is evident that 41 MLA constituencies in the Capital do not have government health facilities. The private medical practitioners provide people living in these constituencies health services. Dr Aggarwal said that in these circumstances raising the water tariff for private medical practitioners was absolutely irrational.

Dr Aggarwal criticised the increase in the water tariff for private medical practitioners. While the government is unable to provide proper health services to the people, the hospitals are over crowded, ill-equipped and inaccessible to the underprivileged. Still it is charging commercial rates for water for private health services, making health services extremely costly and unaffordable, he said.
