He was also told that Taiwo was the son of the Finance Minister of that country. On September 22, the so-called diplomat reached Delhi. Mike told the complainant that Taiwo was bringing a large quantity of dollars. To get the same cleared at the airport, they needed Rs three lakhs. The complainant paid the amount to Mike. He was told that when Taiwo arrived, his money would be refunded. On arrival, Taiwo told the businessman that he would give him black paper that could be converted into dollars by use of a chemical. He offered him the black paper instead of money. To buttress his claim, he dipped real dollars smeared in black into a chemical; the black colour disappeared and the green bucks appeared. However, on suspicion, he contacted the police who raided Oberoi hotel, where the accused were staying. Later, they were arrested. The police also recovered wads of black paper, the chemical and two small bottles of iodine from their possession. |

It is doctors’ turn to be miffed with NCERT
New Delhi, September 30 The author, Vinod Godhre, in the chapter, ‘Ded Hazar Rupaye ki Ice Cream’ (Ice Cream worth fifteen hundred rupees) of the supplementary text book, has not just listed ice cream as a cause of common cold, but also hinted at a “nexus” amongst doctors. The doctors have now written to Union Minister for HRD Arjun Singh and Delhi Education Minister Arvinder Singh Lovely. “This is not only giving a bad name to the profession, but also misleading the youngsters who might be considering opting for the medical profession. I am not even going to raise the issue of maligning the name of doctors by hinting at the cut (sic) mentioned in the book”, said Dr. Vinay Aggarwal, Hony. Gen. Secretary, IMA. In the chapter, the protagonist, who is the writer himself, has given an account of how after eating an ice cream he caught a cold and was made to shell out Rupees 1,500 by the doctor who kept referring him to a pathologist for a series of tests during the investigation. The writer winds up by saying that a cup of tea laced with herbs ultimately proved to be his medicine. The IMA, in its missive to the HRD Minister, has pointed out, “The writer has been living in a falsehood, harbouring the idea that corruption and dishonesty prevail in the medical practice of doctors. Maybe there are some black sheep in the society, but that does not mean that the whole community of doctors is dishonest in its approach to clinical practice”. Further, “there is no medical proof that eating ice cream can cause a common cold. It is a viral that takes its own time and cannot be cured by Tulsi tea as mentioned in the chapter”, protested Aggarwal. The editor of the book, Aniruddh Rai, on his part clarified that the chapter “meant no offence”. “This is a pure satire, a light hearted account of the writer who was asked to go through a series of clinical tests to ascertain the reason for his cold and suggest a cure. The writer, in no way, meant to offend the doctors or comment on their practice”. The medical fraternity is, however, finding it difficult to swallow the explanation. “The chapter should be omitted from the texts, the medical profession is anyway being plagued by quacks and now such unfair references will only compound matters”, said Dr. Anil Bansal, a member the Delhi Medical Association. |
Slaughtered animals: waste sites identified
New Delhi, September 30 The Delhi government is now constructing a modern slaughterhouse in Ghazipur in East district. The construction has been undertaken following the direction of the Supreme Court. The department is considering buying 70 acres of land along the GT Karnal road to dump the waste of the slaughtered animals. This land was earmarked for a landfill site in Delhi’s master plan of 1980, but the move ran into opposition from local residents and politicians. The second site is at Bawana, which has been handed over to the DSIDC by the DDA; and the third site, which is under consideration, is located in outer Delhi. The officers concerned will have to visit these sites most probably in the first week of October; thereafter, they will submit a report to the Chief Minister of Delhi. This decision was taken today at a meeting with the Chief Minister, sources said. At present, the slaughterhouse is located at Kasabpura near Idgah. This is a congested area. The waste material can be seen lying in the open. Foul smell emanates from the site, much to the chagrin of the local residents. The new slaughterhouse is being constructed by a private company, which has brought the latest technology from Germany, the sources said. Three central agencies have sanctioned finance for construction of the slaughterhouse. When the corporation decided to construct the slaughterhouse in Ghazipur, the BJP as well as the local Congress leaders opposed it. The Congress councillor, who represents Ghazipur, had also opposed the decision. Finally, when the corporation announced its decision to construct a new abattoir in Trans-Yamuna, the issue of animal waste was raised. However, the opposition became muted when it was announced that the waste material would be dumped in landfill sites. |

Dengue death
Noida, September 30 Even as the office of the Chief Medical Officer (CMD) has refused to accept it as a dengue case, the doctors at the Shivalik Nursing Home claim it to be a victim of the dreaded Dengue virus. It may be recalled that the victim was brought in serious condition to the Shivalik Nursing Home in Sector-34, Noida. The woman was suffering from high fever. In her blood test, an acute shortage of Platelets was discovered. The CMO was also duly informed, said the doctor at the hospital. However, the CMO office had refused to accept it as a dengue case. A blood slide of the patient was sent to the National Institute of Communicable diseases, Delhi. Meanwhile, Shibiran succumbed to her illness last night. According to the Deputy CMO, Dr R. C. Gaur, the nursing home had not clearly stated the condition of the victim to IGG and IGM and as such, it was sent to NICD. Unless we receive the NICD report on the subject, he said, it would be premature to label it as a dengue case. However, according to medical sources, this is the first case of dengue death reported in the city. A team of experts in vector-borne diseases, which had visited Noida last week, had identified the larvae of mosquitoes that spread dengue at a number of places in Noida. As a result, the town had been declared a dengue prone city. However, it seems the medical staff is yet to take concrete steps to control the menace.

Faridabad needs trauma centre
Faridabad, September 30 With number of road and industrial accidents being reported on a regular basis, the victims either succumb to the injuries or have to pay through their nose in the privately run clinics or nursing homes. The truth is that the treatments offered by the private medical services are perhaps out of the reach of the large number of poor people in the area. In a recent case, the family members of a youth, who met with an accident, is in a dilemma of a different kind. Even as the youth continues to be in a serious condition, his family members are yet to find out how they are going to pay the charges of the hospital. While a sum of Rs 25,000 was initially deposited with the hospital, the family members have been asked to pay Rs 60,000 incurred on the treatment in the four days since he was admitted. The family members are in dilemma whether to shift the victim, who continues to be in the ICU, or continue with the “unaffordable treatment”. This is not an isolated case of this nature in the district. Hundreds of accident victims and their family members have had to face this dilemma. There are over 1000 major cases of road and industrial accidents reported each year. |
