Gang of thieves busted, mobiles recovered
Ludhiana, June 28
The city police today claimed to have busted a gang of thieves, according to an unsigned press note here. The police arrested Vijay Kumar, alias Sony, of Street No. 6 of Guru Amar Dass Colony, Giaspura; Anil Kumar, hailing from Gango Thana village in Saharnpur, Uttar Pradesh, and currently living in Street No. 5 of New Janta Nagar; Mooli, a migrant from Patna and currently living in Dhillon Nagar at Shimla Puri; Bau Rai, a migrant from Bihar and currently living in Janak Puri; and Bablu, a migrant from UP.

BJP stages dharna for better amenities
Ludhiana, June 28
The district unit of the BJP today staged a dharna at the MC headquarters here to register protest against the adjournment of general house meeting, held after a long gap, without conducting any business.

Sonia’s ‘PA’ takes babus for a ride
Ludhiana, June 28
Two middle-rung officials in the local administration were taken for a ride by one Amandeep Mittal, who claimed to be the personal assistant (PA) of the Congress President, Ms Sonia Gandhi. The self-proclaimed PA of Ms Gandhi was accorded state hospitality with two officers being assigned the job to take care of him. However, feeling apprehensive that he might be caught, the “PA” made a quiet exit, leaving behind the “obedient” officials.

Mystery over poisoning of labourers
Mandi Ahmedgarh, June 28
Mystery shrouds the poisoning of four migrant labourers, two of whom have died at a private hospital in Ludhiana. The others are struggling for life at the Dayanand Medical Hospital (DMC) here.

PAU changes eligibility rules for College of Home Science
Ludhiana, June 28
The PAU authorities have changed the eligibility rules for admission to its B.Sc. Home Science (Honours) four year programme. According to the varsity sources, earlier the candidates having only science subjects at class XII level could apply for admission to this course but now the candidates who have taken up arts with home science at the same level are also eligible to apply for the admission to this course.

Atwal releases directory on  Punjab heroes
Ludhiana, June 28
Lok Sabha Deputy Speaker Charanjit Singh Atwal released a directory on the heroes of Punjab at Ramgarhia College here yesterday. The directory has been brought out by the Talented Womens’ Research Library run by Dr Harpreet Kaur.

Recarpeting of roads begins
Ludhiana, June 28
The Municipal Corporation launched a project for resurfacing main roads of Gurdev Nagar locality here today. The project would cost Rs 10 lakh. The recarpeting work was inaugurated by the area councillor, Ms Amrit Varsha Rampal, as the City Mayor, Mr Nahar Singh Gill, arrived late at the function. Speaking on the occasion, Ms Rampal said work had already commenced for laying storm water sewerage in Block I of Sarabha Nagar.

CRIME

Illicit liquor seized
Jagraon, June 28
Ram Singh of Kotumra was arrested while he was distilling illicit liquor in the fields. The police seized 150 kg of lahan, 9.180 litre distilled illicit liquor along with some parts of the still. A case under Sections 61, 1 and 14 of the Excise Act has been registered.

Three killed in road mishaps
Ludhiana, June 28
On the statement of Mr Mool Chand, a migrant from Madhya Pradesh now living near the New Courts, the Model Town police yesterday registered a case under sections 304-A and 427 of the IPC against the driver of a car who knocked down a cyclist near a culvert adjoining Ghawaddi village on Sunday morning and sped away from the scene. The cyclist, Vijay Kumar, brother of the complainant, died on the spot.

Flour millers’ delegation to visit Lanka
Ludhiana, June 28
A delegation of the Roller Flour Millers Federation of India led by its president, Mr Gopal Bhushan Gupta, will be going to Sri Lanka to discuss the modalities of wheat export to that country with officials of the Sri Lankan government. The delegation has been specially invited by the government of Sri Lanka for this purpose.

Richa tops Class X exam in Ludhiana
Ludhiana, June 28
The results of Class X examination conducted by the PSEB were declared today. As many as 248 students were placed in the merit list. Twentyeight students of Ludhiana District found place in the merit list. Richa of RS Model Senior Secondary School , Ludhiana, is the topper in the city securing 6th rank.

“The results of BA (III) and BA (II) are out and what has shocked both the teaching fraternity and students is the mass failure of the latter in English,” according to Prof Lakhwinder Singh Bedi, a senior teacher of English, at GGN Khalsa College, Ludhiana. He is also Member, Undergraduate Board of English, Panjab University.

Shelly Jain tops city in BA II exam
Ludhiana, June 28
The BA II results were declared yesterday. The city topper is Shelly Jain of the Government College for Women and the second position has gone to Sonia Goyal of the same college. Shelly scored 1,373 marks out of 1,600, while Sonia secured 1,299 marks. The third in row was Jeewan Jyoti of Guru Nanak Girls College, Model Town. She scored 1,267 marks.

GNIMT students excel in BCA exam
Ludhiana, June 28
Students of the Guru Nanak Institute of Management and Technology (GNIMT), Gujarkhan Campus, Model Town, have once again exhibited their supremacy in attaining meritorious positions in the BCA final semester examination held in May, 2004, results of which were declared by the PTU today. The institute attained 100 per cent result and all but on of the 75 students scored above 70 per cent marks (Honours). Nine students scored more than 85 per cent marks.

Principal Bahia retires
Ludhiana, June 28
Principal T.R. Bahia of A.S. College, Khanna, retired today after 35 years of meritorious service. A multi- dimensional personality, Principal Bahia combined in himself a committed trade unionist, an able administrator, a visionary, human rights activist, a powerful orator and an astute negotiator.

IGNOU courses on radio from July 5
Ludhiana, June 28
Students of recently started postgraduate diploma in radio prasaran (PGDRP) and postgraduate diploma in audio programme production (PGDAPP) of Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) will be trained by All-India Radio Station, Jalandhar, from July 5 to 23rd on various aspects of radio programme production.

Award eludes versatile artiste
Sukhpal Singh Sekhon
Doraha, June 28
Seven years have passed since Sukhpal Singh Sekhon’s name was declared for the prestigious Shaheede Aazam Bhagat Singh Award, but he is yet to get the award. Sukhpal, who is a dancer, speaker, model, writer, actor and singer, was supposed to get the award in 1997. But he has got no intimation regarding the award till date.

CME on advances in prostate enlargement treatment
Ludhiana, June 28
Dr Baldev Singh Aulakh, a urologist and transplant surgeon at Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) here, has said that a number of minimal invasive techniques like laser, stents, tuna and TMT for the treatment of prostate enlargement, have been developed.

Row over new members for DMC society
Ludhiana, June 28
The general body meeting of the managing society of Dayanand Medical College and Hospital scheduled for June 30 is likely to be stormy one. The general body which is meeting after four months has an item on the agenda under which the internal managing committee has recommended that some new members should be taken in the managing society and the donation amount for the members be raised from Rs 5 lakh to Rs 10 lakh each
