Registration office for Amarnath Yatra Jammu, June 28 This is likely to create confusion, as the state government has not taken any decision on the registration of pilgrims and duration of the yatra. While the Governor, who is chairman of the Amarnath Shrine Board, had announced that the pilgrimage would be extended to two months this time, the Chief Minister rejected his proposal, The VHP, Bajrang Dal and various other religious and social organisations have supported the stance of the Governor. The Union Minister of State for Home, Mr Sri Prakash Jaiswal, has said the Amarnath pilgrimage was a state subject and it was up to the state government to sort out the issue. SRINAGAR: Union Minister and Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee chief Ghulam Nabi Azad discussed the Amarnath Yatra issue with Governor S.K. Sinha and Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed here today. Mr Azad, who arrived here this afternoon, also met his senior party colleagues, who briefed him about the latest situation. He later held separate meetings with the Governor at the Raj Bhavan and the Chief Minister at the latter’s residence. The Governor, who is also the chairman of the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB), has been favouring the continuation of the yatra for two months this year. On the other hand, the Mufti-led state government has been stressing upon restricting it to one month due to security and other reasons. Sources in the Congress said the party also wanted the extension of the yatra. A greater importance is attached to Mr Azad’s visit at this juncture, particularly in view of the resignation of four Congress ministers from Jammu region in protest against the Mufti government’s decision not to extend the yatra. |
4 militants, cop killed in J&K
Srinagar, June 28 Two militants were shot dead by security forces in Trech forests of Kupwara district near the Line of Control this afternoon after nearly two hours of fierce gunbattle. The slain militants were identified as Mohammad Umar Ashraf of the Jaish-e-Mohammad and Mohammad Yousuf of the Lashkar-e-Toiba. Both were residents of Pakistan. Two rifles, four magazines, 87 rounds, four hand grenades and two diaries were recovered from the site of the encounter. In a separate encounter in Bahak forests of the Bandipore area in Baramula district, a Jaish militant, identified as Arshad Ahmad, was killed by security forces. One AK rifle, three magazines, 55 rounds and three hand grenades were recovered from the possession of the slain militant. Another militant was believed to be injured in the shootout and the forces were sifting through the area to nab him. Meanwhile, a police constable, Arshad Ahad, was shot at and critically wounded by unidentified militants at Firdousabad Batmaloo last night. He was shifted to a hospital, where he died. The house of a PDP worker, Abdul Salam Rather, was set afire by unidentified persons at Nunwani in Anantnag district last night. Jammu: A sector commander of the Hizb-ul-Mujahideen was among three persons killed in militancy related incidents in Doda district since Sunday night, official sources said here. On a tipoff about the presence of militants in the Doligam-Banihal forest belt of Doda district, Rastriya Rifles troops launched a cordon and a search operation in the area early on Monday. During the operation, troops busted a major hideout in the Mushmunda-Doligam area and later exchanged fire with militants. In the gunbattle, the Hizb sector commander for Banihal was killed and others escaped. The slain militant was identified as Jallaludin, codenamed Usman Gani. One AK rifle, four grenades, two magazines, 120 rounds, seven detonators, one IED and a radio set were recovered from his possession. In a gunbattle between militants and security forces in Keshwan forests of Doda district on Sunday night, a militants’ supporter Riyaz Ahmed, was killed. Militants kidnapped a civilian, Shabir Ahmed, from his native village Yargund in Doda district on Sunday night and later killed him. His body was recovered from the outskirts of the village.

Kashmir: APHC (Abbas) for trilateral talks Jammu, June 28 APHC chairman Molvi Abbas Ansari today said a series of experiments had been made to resolve the issue through bilateral talks between Delhi and Islamabad, but to no avail. “The late Jawaharlal Nehru had realised the futility of a bilateral dialogue and sent Sheikh Abdullah to Pakistan for talks, which were aborted due to the sudden demise of Nehru,” he maintained. Mr Ansari welcomed the statement of Pakistan’s Foreign Secretary, Mr Riyaz Khokkar, in which he had stated that the issue should be settled as per the wishes of the people of Kashmir. Asked who would determine their wishes, the Molvi said: “We will do it as we represent the aspirations of the people of Kashmir.” The APHC chairman also reiterated his demand for allowing a team of Hurriyat leaders to visit Pakistan for discussing the core issue of Kashmir. He said: “We have to discuss the problem not only with the Pakistan Government, but also with leaders of occupied Kashmir and militant outfits.” Mr Ansari suggested that after they hold first round of talks with the new government in Delhi next month, they should be allowed to have a dialogue with the leadership of Pakistan and occupied Kashmir. |
Mufti wants Kashmir-specific CBMs Srinagar, June 28 He called for an end to violence and bloodshed in the state. He said the announcement of certain confidence building measures (CBMs) to carry the process forward in an atmosphere free of terrorism and violence was a positive step. He, however, stressed the need to announce Kashmir-specific CBMs as a measure of immediate relief to the local people. Mufti Sayeed reiterated the demand to reopen the Srinagar-Muzaffarabad road as a first major confidence-building step. |
Pranab to visit forward areas today Jammu, June 28 This will be the first visit of Mr Mukherjee to Jammu and Kashmir after taking charge of the Defence portfolio in the UPA government. It is learnt that Mr Mukherjee will visit some forward posts in the two districts and also take stock of fencing on the Line of Control (LoC) to prevent the infiltration of terrorists. Sources said that the Centre was concerned on the issue of increase in terrorist violence. The Union Minister of State for Home, Mr Sri Prakash Jaiswal, has been camping here since yesterday when he flew to the village where 12 persons were killed by terrorists. The incident has baffled the authorities as the place where the terrorists struck was supposed to be well guarded. Terrorists had earlier constructed concrete bunkers in the nearby Hilkaka that were demolished by the Army in a special operation. |
Circular bus services launched in Jammu
Jammu, June 28 “Based on the concept of ring road bus services, like the one in New Delhi, circular service north and south has been introduced by the Jammu and Kashmir State Road Transport Corporation in Jammu,” Deputy Chief Minister Mangat Ram Sharma said after flagging off the two ring road bus services here. Two city buses would ply to cover the whole of Jammu city in a circular manner, providing convenient journeys to the public, he said. The circular service north would commence from Dogra Chowk covering Aamphalla, Sidhra, Batra Hospital Bahu Fort and New Tawi Bridge, while the south service would begin from Dogra Chowk and ply on the route via Bikram Chowk, Satwari, Gangyal, Kunjwani, Sainik Colony, Transport Nagar and Panama Chowk. A double-decker bus from Dogra Chowk to Sarore was also flagged off by minister. The double decker bus service had been launched especially for students, he said, adding that special seats had been reserved for women in the bus. A Jammu-Jaipur-Ajmer bus service too was launched on the occasion. The corporation would soon starta regular bus service from Basohli to New Delhi. Mr Sharma said.

Fake currency racket busted, 2 arrested Jammu, June 28 Acting on specific information and complaints from shopkeepers, the police launched an operation in the area and nabbed the duo following raids. The duo, Sudesh Singh and Mahesh Manchanda, belonged to Jammu city and were allegedly in the trade for past three years, the police said. During preliminary interrogation, they allegedly told the police that they had brought fake currency notes of Rs 2 lakh from one Micheal in Delhi. The fake currency was circulated mainly in the remote areas of Dodakud, Batote and Udhampur. The police has registered cases against them. The arrested persons have been sent to the Joint Interrogation Centre and a police team will soon be sent to conduct investigation in Delhi.
