Three Akali leaders allowed to contest SGPC poll
Chandigarh, June 22
Three senior Akali leaders, including two former ministers, will now be able to contest the Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) elections. The Gurdwara Election Commission today accepted their petitions and quashed the orders passed by the deputy commissioners (DC) concerned, rejecting their candidature.

No action in tree felling case
Amritsar, June 22
Even as more than 2,000 tree saplings are being readied by the municipal corporation here to be planted on the stretch from the railway station upto the bypass leading to the Wagah international border, no action has been initiated against the “illegal” felling of as many as eight trees in the park of a posh colony allegedly by some employees of the municipal corporation in connivance with some others .

Principal alleges harassment by ex-employer

Dr Rakesh Mohan, Principal of SPN College at Mukerian in Hoshiarpur district, who served as English lecturer at the SRPAAB College at Pathankot for 22 years prior to his present assignment, alleged today that the acting Principal and the management of the college at Pathankot were not releasing his gratuity and transferring his provident fund account to harass him.

DM orders closure of Cosmo Club

The District Magistrate, Mr Raminder Singh, today ordered the closure of the Cosmo Club located on the Taylor Road . In a written order, he said the club was indulging in illegal activities, including gambling and drinking.

Passport centre to close
from July 1

The local passport collection centre, which was opened nine years ago for the benefit of residents of border belt, including Amritsar, Gurdaspur and Ferozepore districts, would be closed after June 30.

Computerised rail booking shut for 5 hrs
Phagwara, June 22
People were inconvenienced today as computerised railway ticket booking remained shut for five hours at the railway station here. When contacted, a railway official said the power shutdown had caused it.

Flesh trade racket busted, nine held
Pathankot, June 22
The Shahpurkandi police claims to have busted a racket of flesh trade and booked 10 persons and arrested nine including four women in this connection.

2 youths attack cop, snatch revolver
Bathinda, June 22
Mr Jugraj Singh, Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI), was attacked by two unidentified youths while he was going to his house after duty late last night. The attackers took his service revolver with them.
