Alert car driver overpowers bag-lifters
Chandigarh, June 22
Two bag-lifters from South India were arrested and another hospitalised after they were overpowered by the victim and passersby here today. The three had lifted a bag containing Rs 24,000 from the car of the victim in Sector 7. The police said the persons arrested belonged to Bawarias caste of South India.

The Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Maintenance Command, Air Marshal D.C. Nigam released the 500th An-32 aircraft engine to be overhauled by the IAF at a brief ceremony organised at No.3 Base Repair Depot here today. The type AI-20D engine was received by the Commanding Officer of.48 Squadron, Group Capt Rajeev Sachdev, for use in the squadron's aircraft.

General Naidu takes over as GOC, 14 Corps

325 jhuggis razed
Panchkula, June 22
The Estate Office today removed encroachments from land belonging to Haryana Urban Development Authority in Sector 21, here. As many as 325 jhuggis were removed from the plot by the anti-encroachment staff of the department.

Blame game precedes strike by powermen

The proposed two-hour tool-down strike to be observed on June 24 by the UT Powermen Union has led to a blame game between the union and the Chandigarh  Administration.

Vendor questioned in abduction case

A roadside vendor of Sector 22 was questioned here today at the Burail police post for allegedly abducting his wife, then a minor, two years back from Noida, near Delhi. Vinod fell in love with a minor girl and left Noida to settle here along with her about two years ago. He married the girl here.

Girl kidnapped by neighbour

A 19-year-old girl from Khuda Ali Sher was allegedly kidnapped by a neighbour. The mother of the girl said Manjit Singh of the same locality had allegedly kidnapped her daughter on June 14.

36 cases settled at Lok Adalat

A special Lok Adalat was held at State Legal Services Authority, Sector 9, yesterday. About 42 cases were taken up and 36 cases were settled and a sum of Rs 7,78,755 was awarded. Beside this Rs 15,000 were also recovered from the borrowers on the spot.

20 leprosy patients examined

Around 20 leprosy patients were examined at a camp organised here today by the District Leprosy Society. The examined patients were also assessed for reconstructive surgery. Six community workers were trained on detection, treatment and care of the patients.
