MDMK will not join UPA govt, says Vaiko

Chennai, June 22
Marumalarchi DMK General Secretary Vaiko today ruled out his party joining the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance Government at the Centre.

Talking to newspersons at the airport here, on his arrival from a 19-day visit to the United States, Mr Vaiko said there would not be any change in the decision taken in the Party’s General Council in this regard. But, the party would continue to extend outside support to the UPA government, he added.

About the reported remarks of the MDMK presidium chairman, Mr L.Ganesan, MP, that only on the arrival of Mr Vaiko the question of joining the UPA government would be decided upon, Mr Vaiko said he was not aware under what circumstances Mr Ganesan had made such remarks. He would reply after talking to Mr Ganesan, he said.

“But we will never join the government. There is no change in our stand,’’ he maintained.

On POTA’s repeal, Mr Vaiko said the UPA government was ‘’very firm’’ to repeal this ‘’anti-democratic Act.’’ as it was listed in the Common Minimum Programme (CMP). The Act would be repealed ‘’very soon,’’ he asserted adding that the MDMK, right from the beginning, was insisting on the Act to be repealed. —UNI
