Tytler row reaches DSGMC office New Delhi, June 5 The livid protestors, including some 1984 riots widows, lay prostrate outside the DSGMC office and pledged not to allow the Sikh leader to use any podium for speeches. On Monday, Mr Chandok had honoured Mr Tytler, who faces allegations of complicity in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, with a Siropa (holy stole) at Delhi’s Chelmsford Club, sparking outrage in several quarters of the community. The DSGMC chief’s act has been also condemned by Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) General Secretary Sukhbir Singh Badal, whose party staged a walkout in the Lok Sabha during the swearing-in of Congress MPs blamed for the massacre. Mr Badal pointed out that the presentation of a Siropa to Mr Tytler amounted to ‘’misuse of the religious position which Mr Chandok holds’’. Besides, the SAD Youth Wing, led by Mr Paramjit Singh Rana, today called for boycott of Mr Chandok and appealed to the Akal Takht, the highest seat of Sikh temporal authority, to take notice of the episode. According to Gurcharan Singh Babbar, president of the All India Sikh Conference, ‘’We have just begun the protest. Demonstrations will be held whenever the DSGMC chief holds meetings and that includes outside his house.’’ The protesters called for immediate resignation of Mr Chandok, a city businessman and a co-opted DSGMC member who became committee president for a one-year term in September 2003. ‘‘The presentation of Siropa to Mr Tytler was unwarranted. It should not have been done,’’ said senior committee member Manjit Singh, who last year had snapped links with the Badal-led SAD. Several other leaders have also denounced the presentation of Siropa to Mr Tytler, pointing out that the Sikh religious honours are to be extended only at gurdwaras.

Computerised toll tax at
10 barriers New Delhi, June 5 The MCD had given a contract to the same company last year for making collections at all the toll gates; the contract, which lapsed in May this year, had cost the corporation Rs 70.2 crore. In the meantime, the NHAI and the Central Public Works Department had objected that the toll barriers should not be put on the National Highways as they slowed down the traffic, thereby creating problems for commuters. The Municipal Commissioner, Mr Rakesh Mehta, and other senior officers of the corporation had a number of discussions with the chairman of NHAI. According to sources in the corporation, the MCD had decided to go in for computerized tolling on 10 major roads, which yield 80 per cent of the toll tax revenue. These roads are: KGT Road (Singhu border), New Mandoli Road (Mandoli border), GT Road Shahdra (Apsara border), Gazipur border, Kalindi Kunj border, Badarpur border, Aya Nagar border, Rajokri border, Kapashera border and Tikri Border. On the other points, the toll will be collected manually.

Car seized at gunpoint; shops looted in plaza Ghaziabad, June 5 Arun Som was going from his 145-III-H house in Nehru Nagar to meet his friend Hari Om Kasna in Rajender Nagar. His car was being driven by Amit Garg. Another employee Deepak Bhatti was also in the car. When the criminals accosted them on the way, they tried to raise the alarm, but the miscreants threatened to shoot them down and sped away in the car. Later, they informed the Sahibabad police. CO Dinesh Yadav with a police party reached the spot immediately. The police said that it was a brand-new car and even its registration number had not been allotted yet. The police are suspecting Deepak Bhatti’s hand. He was taken to the police station for interrogation. But till late at night, there was no trace of the desperados or the car. To cap it, three shops in Supertex Plaza were looted under Sahiabad police station. Ironically, the Inspector General of Police, Meerut Zone RK Tiwari had come to Ghaziabad to reassure the angry traders and businessmen, harassed by a series of looting cases recently. Mr Tiwari spent two hours with the Ghaziabad police, giving them tips to improve the law and order. He took a serious view of the recent incidents of loot in the city and instructed the district police to arrest the culprits soon. The IG also advised the traders to take some precautions. Mr Tiwari told them to ask for the police escort while carrying large quantity of cash. The police can even provide security for carrying just Rs 25,000, he said. Those who don’t want the police security should have their own private security guards. “The SP City will meet the traders every month to discuss their problems. The DM and the SSP should also meet them once in two months. The police will devise a suitable security system, Mr Tiwari assured the traders. District Magistrate Santosh Yadav has meanwhile decided that a magistrate will be on duty with each police patrol. This is being done to “improve the credibility and efficiency of the police”, the DM said. On the other hand, the traders continued their dharna in Ram Nagar Kiran Mandi and displayed black flags on their shops. Lid off robbery, burglary cases

Minister urged to revoke circular New Delhi, June 5 The legislator, Mr Vijay Jolly, who represents Saket in the Delhi Legislative Assembly, has written to the minister, Mr Raj Kumar Chauhan, detailing the “concern” of the residents. The letter has been written on behalf of the Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) of Saket, Pushp Vihar, Neb Sarai, Anupam Apartments, Sainik Farm and Devli Village. The letter claims City Forest Hauz Rani is the only green lung for the residential colonies around it. “The government order … shall deplete the green forest cover”, it reads. Meanwhile, the Delhi Pradesh BJP has asked the Sheila Dikshit Ministry to develop 177 urbanised villages as model units for the betterment of the people. Delhi Pradesh BJP President Harshvardhan said the Government of NCT of Delhi should constitute a commission to survey the villages in three months and suggest a suitable master plan. The residents of the villages have been facing problems due to lack of basic amenities such as electricity, water, road and sewerage. These areas, he said, also have no schools, health centres or community buildings. He claimed that the government had acquired the land on the promise of developing it but has done precious little for decades together. He also suggested evening classes for making villagers literate.
