PROGRAMME: A 28-day orientation programme was inaugurated in the academic staff college Guru Nanak Dev University on Friday by Prof S.L. Sharma, Dean, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Panjab University, Chandigarh. Forty lecturers from various colleges in the country are participating in the programme.

TEACHER HELD: The Vigilance Bureau here nabbed teacher Ranjit Singh Rana for getting government job by furnishing fake B.Ed degree said Mr Dilbagh Singh Gill, Senior Superintendent of Police, Vigilance Bureau here on Friday.

SELECTED: Dr Navdeep Singh has been selected for DM course in Medical Oncology (Cancer) at the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) New Delhi. He is the only candidate selected for this course for July, 2004 session. He is a graduate and postgraduate of the Government Medical College here.

BLOOD CAMPS: The Akal Purakh Ki Fauj will organise blood group testing and blood donation camps all over the country on June 6 to mark 20th anniversary of Operation Bluestar. Camps will be organised at Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Patti, Ajnala, Baba Bakala, Khadoor Sahib, Jhabaal, Bhikhiwind, Rayya and other places.

TWO HELD, BLUE FILMS SEIZED: The police has recovered 22 blue films and 426 pirated CDs from Vinod Kumar and Vijay Kumar said Bathinda SSP Kapil Dev here on Friday. They were arrested and a case was registered against them.

Hoshiarpur
FAKE CURRENCY: The police here arrested Muni Lal Kumar, son of Hari Nand Mathur of Notan and Raj Kumar Upadhiya, son of the late Pad Kishore of Mangalpur Bihar and recovered fake currency of Rs 86,500 from them. Fake currency notes of Rs 1000 denomination and 139 notes of Rs 500 denomination were seized. A case was registered.

FANS DONATED: The Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) Sabha here on Friday donated 883 ceiling fans to 524 Government Schools in the district. The schools are located in Dasuya, Mukerian and Garhshankar subdivisions of the district.

ARRESTED: The police caught Ms Harbans Kaur, Junior Assistant, SMO’s office while she was taking bribe of Rs 1500 from Mr Mehar Singh, of Sahlon village for the correction of a mistake in a birth certificate, here on Friday. A case was registered against her.

4 HELD FOR THEFTS: The police here nabbed Parvinder Ram of Jhander Kalan village, Kamal Kumar, Roop Lal, Sabba and Naresh Kumar of Mahil Gahilan village and recovered two stolen motor cycles and two power generators from them. A case has been registered against them. The police also arrested Joginder Dass of Dhaula village and recovered 9 bottles of liquor.

FAREWELL: Dayanand Amarnath College of Education for Women here organised a farewell function on the retirement of Prof G.S. Sandhu here on Thursday.

HONOURED: The All-India Pingalwara Charitable Society, Amritsar, honoured Mr Budh Singh Dhahan, founder president of Guru Nanak Mission Medical and Educational Trust, Dhahan Kaleran (Nawanshahr). Ms Sushil Kaur, Manager, Public Relations, Guru Nanak Mission Medical and Educational Trust, Dhahan Kaleran, received the honour on behalf of Mr Budh Singh Dhahan.

CREMATED: Body of Shammi Mahajan (42) a Congress leader was cremated on Friday here. He died on Thursday at Delhi.

3 BOOKED: Three persons have eben booked under the Wildlife Protection Act. They were identified as Channa, Dera both of Rasulpur village and Kulwant of Sooda village in Ferozepore district.

BLOOD DONATION: A blood donation camp was organised by the Thalassaemic Children Welfare Association at the PGI here on Saturday. Superintending Hospital Engineer and Head of the Department of Hospital Engineering and Planning, Ashok Shreedhar inaugurated the camp. 

ANNUAL FUNCTION: The 30th annual function celebrations of the Shri Sidh Baba Balak Nath Seva Mandal in Sector 29 will conclude on Sunday. The programme will start with ‘dhuna pujan’ and ‘dwaja rohan’. Kirtan will start at 10 a.m., followed by a bhandra. 

OPEN DISCUSSION: Parents attended an open discussion and interaction session during the workshop organised by the Pearls Performing Arts Society in Chandigarh on Saturday. The parents discussed problems and personality traits of their children and personal counselling was given in special cases.

SHIRDI SAI SAMAJ: Executive committee members of the Shirdi Sai Samaj have elected the new managing committee of the samaj. The members were elected on the Sector 29 premises of the temple, in the presence of all the members. The office-bearers include: Mr Ramesh Kalia — president; Mr Anil Badhwar and Mr Bimal Rai; vice-presidents — Mr Anil Khurana — general secretary; and Mr S.K. Jan — cashier.

OFFICE-BEARERS: Mr Sasidharan Nair K. has been elected president of the Kerala Sastra Kala Manch. Mr N.K. Ramakrishnan is the vice-president, Mr Jayachandran general secretary, Mr Aravind K.R. secretary-socio-political, Mr Xavier K.T. secretary-arts-cultural, Mr Varghese M.C. secretary sports-discipline and Mr Soul T. treasurer.

PREKSHA MEDITATION: To fight stress and to attain peace in life, Muni Vinay Kumar has recommended preksha meditation. He was addressing a press conference in Sector 22 here on the inauguration of the Preksha Meditation Society on Saturday.

INAUGURATED: Bilas-pur Sadar Congress MLA Tilakraj Sharma inaugurated Panchayat ghar at Chalehli, 40 km from here on Friday. He said Rs 2 lakh would be spent on providing link road to Chalehli Senior Secondary School while a water tank has been constructed at Rehag village by the Soil Conservation wing of the Agriculture Department.

PATWARI HELD: The Vigilance Department on Friday arrested Kehar Singh, patwari posted at Lahar Patwar Circle, when he was accepting a bribe of Rs 1400 for the attestation of mutation of land.

ACCIDENT: Three persons were injured when the Maruti van they were travelling met with an accident near Dehrian under the Jwalamukhi police station. The injured included Pradeep Kumar, driver of the van.

ONE HELD: The Palam-pur police on Friday raided the shop of Balbir Kapoor at Jhikli Bhet village, 45 km from here and recovered four blue film cassettes. He was arrested and a case registered.

SUICIDE: Ms Sandeep Kaur (24) committed suicide by consuming some poisonous substance. Her husband is Kasauli Air Force Station employee.
