Tells Punjab to pay cost of suit

New Delhi, June 4
In a major boost to the Haryana Government, the Supreme Court today directed the Centre to construct the unfinished portion of controversial Sutlej Yamuna Link (SYL) Canal in the territory of Punjab to facilitate sharing of the Punjab rivers waters between the two states.

Punjab has received with dismay the Supreme Court verdict on the SYL canal. A special meeting of the Punjab Council of Ministers has been convened here for Monday.

Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala today greeted the Supreme Court order on the SYL canal, saying that his father, the late Mr Devi Lal, had a “dream” of seeing the canal functional.

SC stays Rajya Sabha poll process
New Delhi, June 4
In a major jolt to political parties’ efforts to accommodate defeated candidates in the Rajya Sabha by nominating them from a state other than where they belonged, the Supreme Court today stayed the election process for filling 65 seats in the Upper House, following a petition challenging the deletion of domicile clause in the Representation of People Act (RPA).

Somnath Chatterjee elected LS Speaker

Veteran parliamentarian and CPM leader Somnath Chatterjee was today unanimously elected Speaker of the 14th Lok Sabha. Mr Chatterjee, a 10-time MP from Bolpur constituency in West Bengal, is the first Communist to occupy this high office.
