Woman burnt to death; in-laws booked
Ludhiana, June 4
Roopinder Kaur, 19, was burnt to death in her in-laws’ house at Bhagwan Nagar near Dholewal Chowk here this afternoon. She had wed merely a month ago.

Rs 2 lakh robbed from school board counter
Ludhiana, June 4
Three armed robbers struck at a cash counter of the Punjab School Education Board in Katani Kalan village under Sahnewal police station this afternoon and decamped with over Rs 2 lakh after injuring a sub-divisional officer.

Housing society faces contempt proceedings
Ludhiana, June 4
Four members of the managing committee of the Ludhiana Aggarwal Cooperative House Building Society, including its president, are facing charges of criminal contempt of court for allegedly casting aspersions on the Deputy Registrar of Cooperative Societies (DRCS) in the course of a petition filed in his court under Sections 55 and 56 of the Punjab Cooperative Societies Act, 1961.

47 cases settled at Lok Adalat
Ludhiana, June 4
It was a happy day for Mahant Ram. His case against his employer, Hero Cycles, was settled in a lok adalat today. He got Rs 1 lakh as per the settlement. The Additional District Judge-cum-Presiding Officer of Labour Court, Mr A.K. Singla, settled 47 cases pertaining to disputes between labourers and employers. Sixty-three cases were placed before the lok adalat. The total amount disbursed to the labourers was nearly Rs 2.38 lakh.

Married woman kidnapped
Ludhiana, June 4
On the statement of Mr Mool Chand of Attal Nagar, the Basti Jodhewal police yesterday registered a case under Section 366 of the IPC against Jaswinder Pal Singh, alias Laddu, of the same area. The complainant stated that the accused had kidnapped his wife, Veena Kumari (42), on the evening of May 25 and taken her to an undisclosed place.

Dead twin calves delivered
Ludhiana, June 4
In a unique operation the veterinarians of the Punjab Agricultural University delivered dead twin calves from a buffalo without any surgery. The operation was performed by a team of veterinarians led by Dr Prahlad Singh, assistant professor in the Department of Gynaecology and Obstetrics and comprising of Dr Avtar Singh Atwal and Dr Amandeep Singh Shan.

Sayali lends glamour to NIFD convocation
Ludhiana, June 4
Femina Miss India (World) Sayali Bhagat today launched degree/diploma programmes offered by Annamalai University in collaboration with the National Institute of Fashion Design (NIFD) here. She released the prospectus for the course. She also visited the NIFD institute and interacted with students.

Camping time for tiny tots
Ludhiana, June 4
A summer camp has been organised at Little Wonders Playway School, Sundar Nagar. It will continue till the end of the month. Children will learn pop bhangra, western dance and Malwai gidha at the camp. Students of different age groups can take part in this camp, said Principal Mona Jain.

PCTE students excel
Ludhiana, June 4
Deepika Narang, Prabjot Singh, Arshpreet Khattra and Emika Oberoi of Punjab College of Technical Education (PCTE) have bagged 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 8th positions out of first 10 positions in BBA (fifth semester) examinations held by Punjab Technical University in December 2003.

CMCH cautions people against gastroenteritis

The Christian Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) here has sounded a note of caution to the residents asking them to take adequate preventive measures against outbreak of gastroenteritis and other water-borne diseases like cholera, typhoid and jaundice, which were common in the prevailing season.

Punjab National Bank has donated an ambulance to Bhai Ghanaiya Charitable Hospital. Mr U.S. Bhargava, General Manager, Punjab zone, handed over the keys of the ambulance at a function organised here today.
