Varundeep tops district with 96.4 pc marks
123 get above 90 pc in CBSE Class X exam
Ludhiana, May 28
Students from DAV Public School maintained their supremacy even in the Class X examination conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education, the results of which were declared today. Varundeep, a student of DAV Public School, outshined in Class X examination by scoring 96.4 per cent.

‘Tainted’ cop set to become SHO

Controversial policeman, Shamsher Singh Guddu, who has been allegedly evading arrest after a local court issued non-bailable warrants against him and who is facing charges on various accounts, is all set to take over as the Station House Officer of the all-important Sadar police station, thanks to the active support, he has been receiving from a Congress minister.

PCMSA resents suspension of SMO

Taking a serious note of a rising incidence of mortality in the recent outbreak of gastroenteritis in various parts of Punjab, the Punjab Civil Medical Services Association has demanded that strict action should be taken against officials concerned of the Public Health Department and the controlling civil administrators responsible for failing to prevent the outbreak of water-borne diseases in various parts of Punjab.

In order to give thrust to animal husbandry sector in Punjab, the state government is contemplating to establish Guru Angad Dev University of Veterinary and Animal Science in the state.

600 queue up for Zee audition
Ludhiana, May 28

Tension was palpable as aspiring boys and girls queued up for audition to get a chance to act in films with Sunny Deol,Salman Khan and Preity Zinta. Zee TV’s “India’s Best Cinestars ki Khoj”, a talent hunt to discover potential stars held its auditions here today. The audition will carry on tomorrow too.

Highhandedness by cops, excise officials alleged
Khanna, May 28
Congress activist Sukhminder Singh of Naraingarh village has complained that three excise inspectors and some police officials conducted a raid on his house yesterday and took away Rs 20,000, 50g of gold and some important papers. He lodged a complaint at the city police station.

One held for attempt to murder
Ludhiana, May 28
The Koom Kalan police yesterday arrested Jagdish Singh, a resident of Chaunta village, for trying to kill another person living in the same village on Thursday. A case under Section 307 of the IPC and various sections of the Arms Act was registered against him on the statement of Mr Balbir Singh.

Small-scale sector seeks  credit guarantee
Ludhiana, May 28
The small scale industrial sector has sought credit guarantee from the government, while emphasizing the need for promoting and safeguarding the small scale sector. Speakers at a seminar organised by the small industries and business helpline of the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry here last night pointed out that the biggest problem for the small scale industry was the non availability of credit.

Allahabad institute to open centre in city soon
Ludhiana, May 28
Allahabad Agricultural Institute has planned to open a distance education centre for two courses — bachelor in medical laboratory technology and bachelor in radiology and imaging technology, in the city soon.

Dairy training course ends
Ludhiana, May 28
A 10-day specialised dairy training course, organised by the Department of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Extension, Punjab Agricultural University, concluded here today. As many as 19 trainees from different parts of the country participated in the course. Experts from the college of Veterinary Science delivered lectures on various aspects of dairy farming.

Man convicted of rash driving
Ludhiana, May 28
Mr Sunil Arora, Additional Sessions Judge-cum-presiding officer of the fast-track court has sentenced Parmod Shah of Railway Colony to two years’ imprisonment on the charge of killing a cyclist, Sahibdin, while driving his vehicle rashly. The accused was booked under Sections 279, 427 and 304-A, IPC, on May 23, on the statement of Bikker Singh.

Sub-junior swimming championship begins today
Ludhiana, May 28
Based on their performance during the recently held Ludhiana District Junior and Sub-Junior Swimming Championship here last week, the following boys and girls have been selected to represent the district in the 20th Sub- Junior Punjab State Swimming Championship scheduled to be held at the Gen Gurnam Singh Public Indoor Swimming Pool at Sangrur on May 29 and 30, according to Mr Balraj Sharma, general secretary, District Swimming Association, Ludhiana.

Cancel cracker dealer’s licence, says DC
Ludhiana, May 28
Following a complaint regarding the illegal storing of fire crackers in a residential area, the Deputy Commissioner, Mr Anurag Verma, has written to the Joint Chief Controller of Explosives at Faridabad, recommending the cancellation of license of Bodh Raj, a cracker dealer.
