Lalji Tandon In a major blow to the BJP, the Election Commission today issued show-cause notice to the saffron party for violating the Model Code of Conduct and ordered the registration of a bribery case against BJP leader Lalji Tandon and others in the Lucknow saree stampede incident, in which 22 women and children lost their lives.

The BJP today formally announced the candidature of former cricketer and commentator Navjot Singh Sidhu from Amritsar constituency in Punjab and famous television actress Smriti Irani, Tulsi of famous tele-serial Kyonki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, from the minority-dominated Chandni Chowk seat in the Capital.

Independent candidate Ram Jethmalani, who is away to London for treatment of his elder son Janak, today withdrew from the contest against Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee in Lucknow for the May 5 polling in the coming Lok Sabha elections.

3 ex-MPs discharged in JMM case
New Delhi, April 16

A Delhi court has discharged three former MPs in a matter connected to the JMM bribery case. Special Judge Dinesh Dayal discharged Simon Marandi, Suraj Mandal and Shibu Soren, all former MPs of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha. The CBI had alleged that the MPs had taken over Rs 4 crore in 1993 to vote against a no-confidence motion against the then Rao Government.

Smuggled youths held on returning to India
Amritsar, April 16
Three Punjabi Sikh youths, who had left country illegally and arrived along with a Sikh jatha by a special train at Attari, were arrested and booked by General Railway Police for illegally entering India.
