Short circuit leads to blast, 8 children severely burnt
Mohali, April 16
Eight children of a slum colony here were today severely burnt while they were playing under high-tension electricity wires that got entangled with their kite string, leading to a short circuit followed by a blast and a shower of sparks and fire balls.

Truck runs over sleeping labourers, 1 dead
Mohali, April 16
A 21-year-old labourer was killed and five others injured when a tipper truck ran over them while they were asleep on a kuchcha road in Sector 70 here yesterday morning.

Jains file papers on first day
Chandigarh, April 16
Mr Satya Pal Jain, BJP candidate from the city, filed his nomination papers on the first day of the exercise which began today. The papers say that he “is not accused of any offence punishable with imprisonment for two years or more in a pending case in which a charge has been framed by the competent court of competent jurisdiction”.

As many as 66 booths out of the total 405 in the city have been declared sensitive for the forthcoming parliamentary elections, Mr Arun Kumar, Deputy Commissioner, said here today.

25 schools vie for honours

As many as 378 students from 25 schools participated in various competitions organised by the local chapter of the Aeronautical Society of India today. For students from schools in Chandigarh and Mohali, the competitions were held at Kendriya Vidyalaya, Sector 31 here, while for students from Panchkula and Kalka the venue was Satluj Public School, Panchkula.

Indian victory invites applause

Cricket series with Pakistan is over and India has won both one-day as well as Test series, but it is the cricket which is the real winner. This was the view of the majority among the cricket fraternity at the conclusion of the series today after India wrapped up the Test series with a thumping win in third Test.

Selection trials conclude

The annual selection trials of the Shivalik sports academies concluded today at Shivalik Public School, Sector 41. Mr D.S. Bedi, Director-Principal of the school, said the academy boys have done well in the past. Mr Bedi later addressed the participants and assured them of a better prospects in sports and academic front in the coming session.

The local unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party today unauthorisedly put up banners and flags all across the city. Late in the afternoon, Mr Arun Kumar, Deputy Commissioner-cum-Additional Chief Electoral Officer, sent teams to pull down the banners slung across electricity poles and also the flags on all roundabouts in the city.
