Utter confusion prevailed at a question paper distribution centre of the Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) set up in Government Senior Secondary School, Bharat Nagar here, when torn and improperly sealed packets of question papers were brought to the centre this morning.

Manish Tiwari is Congress candidate for Ludhiana
Ludhiana, March 30
Even amidst reports that the Congress high command had almost finalised the candidature of former All-India Youth Congress president Manish Tiwari for the Ludhiana Lok Sabha seat, loyalists of Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh made another attempt to persuade the leadership to opt for Mr Surinder Singla, a party legislator and Chairman of the Fiscal Reforms Committee.

Abducted woman, daughter united with family
Ludhiana, March 30
A police party, headed by SHO Rajinder Singh Sohal of the Sadar police station, has found Mira Devi, wife of Ram Kumar, who was allegedly abducted along with her daughter a few days back from her residence by Sunil Kumar, a migrant from Hardoi district in Uttar Pradesh.

Workshop held on employees’ funds
Ludhiana, March 30
A workshop was organised by SPMISSA in association with the Regional P.F. Commissioner, Ludhiana, to create healthy industrial relations. Today’s workshop was inaugurated by Mr V.P. Chopra, Member, Central Board of Trustees, EPFO. Mr V.N. Sharma, Regional P.F. Commission (I) of SPMISSA, also addressed the employers.

Extension sought for filing e-TDS returns
Ludhiana, March 30
The District Taxation Bar Association (Direct Taxes) has pleaded for extending the date of filing e-TDS returns by corporate assessees beyond March 31. Mr R.K. Mehta, president, and Mr Raman Goyal, secretary of the association, said in a joint statement here today that the programme for filing the returns had been released by the Income Tax Department in February 2004 and the last date for filing the returns was fixed as March 31, 2004. 

Ambedkar Divas on April 17
Ludhiana, March 30
Maharishi Valmiki Parbandhak Committee would observe birthday of Dr B.R. Ambedkar, at Bhattian Bet village near octroi post here on April 17. Stating this, Mr Sohan Lal Sidhu, president of the committee, said that a Valmiki leader, Mr Kala Hans, would be felicitated at the function for his nomination to the Punjab State Labour Welfare Board by the Punjab Government.

Ram Navami celebrated 
Ludhiana, March 30
Today was a grand day of celebrations in all temples here as the nine days of Navratras came to an end. The atmosphere in the temples was festive as these were decorated with the idols of the nine incarnations of Ma Durga .The gaily attired devotees, from all walks of life had started thronging the temples from early morning as they wanted to worship. Lord Rama whose birthday falls today and coincides with the end of the Navratras.

Ludhiana, March 30
The team of Gujranwala Guru Nanak Institute of Management and Technology, Civil Lines, here won the overall trophy at Anjuman, inter-college cultural festival, organised by Punjab Agricultural University, at Pal Auditorium recently.

School opened
Ludhiana, March 30
Kangaroo Kids Education Limited opened its new branch of pre-school and primary school at Dugri here last evening. Parents were also invited to the function. Children were taken around the campus which has a large playground, a life-size doll house, a playroom, a computer room, an outdoor gymnasium, music room, a library, sand and water play areas and marine water rooms.

2 KVM teachers retire
Ludhiana, March 30
The teachers of Kundan Vidya Mandir (KVM) bade adieu to two of their colleagues, Ms Tripta Sharda and Ms Usha Kalra, on their superannuation here today. Both teachers were given a warm sendoff by members of the staff and the managing committee.

Pak leader gives prizes for plays
Ludhiana, March 30
A three-day theatre festival held at Punjabi Bhawan, Ludhiana, was dedicated to Balwant Gargi, the founding father of modern Punjabi theatre. It was organized by the Rangmanch Sansthan, Ludhiana in collaboration with the North Zone Cultural Centre and the Punjabi Sahitya Akademi.

645 patients examined at Rauni medical camp
Ludhiana, March 30
The Christian Medical College and Hospital (CMCH), in association with the Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee, Rauni, held a one-day medical and dental camp at Rauni village. Consultation, treatment and medicines were provided free of cost to patients at the camp. The committee also arranged a free langar for the patients. A team of 22 doctors from nine specialities and 25 staff members of the CMCH participated in the camp.

Experts give tips to ophthalmologists
Ludhiana, March 30
The Ludhiana Ophthalmological Society, in collaboration with Gurdev Hospital, organised a state-level workshop here yesterday. It was attended by around 120 delegates.

GNIMT athletes score a hat trick
Ludhiana, March 30
The local Guru Nank Institute of Management and Technology (GNIMT), Model Town, secured 69 points to win the overall championship for the third successive year in the 7th annual athletics championship of the Punjab Technical University held on March 26 and 27 at the Baba Banda Singh Bahadur Engineering College, Fatehgarh Sahib.

Shivani, Manuj adjudged best athletes
Ludhiana, March 30
Shivani Sharma and Manuj Uppal of the BAMC, Daudhar, secured 56 and 30 points, respectively, and were declared best athletes among girls and boys in the second annual sports meet of the Shaheed Kartar Singh Ayurvedic Medical Colleges and Hospitals held from March 24 to 28 at Sarabha, about 20 km from here.

29 selected for cricket coaching
Ludhiana, March 30
Forty players (u-15 years) turned up for the trials conducted here today at the Arya College for Boys ground by the Ludhiana District Cricket Association (LDCA). Of these, 29 were selected for the regional coaching centre being run by the association.
