Seized drugs vanish from malkhana

The district police has detected serious irregularities in records of malkhana property in Division No. 2 police station from 1997 onwards. A retired Head Constable has been booked for improper maintenance of records due to which a substantial quantity of narcotics recovered by the police in different cases was siphoned off.

Examiners to face action for remaining absent

Over 20 per cent of the examiners and supervisors who remained absent from duty during the ongoing examination being conducted by the Punjab School Education Board are likely to face a strict departmental action.

Supercop may be Cong choice for city
Ludhiana, March 12
With each passing day, a fresh name seems to be getting added to the list of Congress probables from the Ludhiana Parliamentary constituency. The supercop and former Director- General of the Punjab Police, Mr K.P.S. Gill, is learnt to be another probable in the reckoning from here. At the same time, the name of sitting MP Gurcharan Singh Galib is also said to be under consideration. Mr Galib is believed to be the front runner.

Snakes charmed for Rs 1,000!

Residents of Nalli Mohalla, located along the Deepak Cinema road, had a scary time for hours today after the news spread that two snakes had been spotted in a house. They heaved a sigh of relief when the reptiles were captured by two snake charmers, who charged a cool Rs 1,000 from the house owner.

Trust chief to withdraw orders
Says no intention to insult trustees
Ludhiana, March 12
Putting to rest the storm brewing in the Ludhiana Improvement Trust, (LIT), for the past many days, the Chairman today said he would withdraw the orders abstaining employees to divulge details of any work to the trustees, thereby inviting their wrath.

Woman goes missing with two children
Ludhiana, March 12
Mr Vashishat Parshad Gupta (34), a native of Bihar who lives in Giaspura and works in a hosiery unit in Madho Puri, has not taken food since March 4 when his wife, Manju (29) went missing in the evening along with a four-year-old daughter and a four month-old son. Mr Gupta said he had been married for the past 16 years and had three children. There had been no marital discord ever. His wife had had fits in the past when she would lose memory temporarily.

Pensioners hold meeting
Ludhiana, March 12
The state executive of the Punjab State Pensioners’ Confederation held its meeting today at Pensioners Bhavan with Mr B.R. Kaushal, state president in the Chair. The participants numbering 50 from all over the state analysed the fallout of the state-level pensioners dharna before the office of the Deputy Commissioner, Ludhiana, on February 25.

Migrant kidnaps minor girl
Ludhiana, March 12
Bhanu Kumar, a migrant from Bihar, was yesterday booked on the charge of kidnapping a minor girl. He was booked under Sections 363 and 366 of the IPC on the complaint of Mr Narsingh Dass, who hails from Kalanaur village in Rohtak district of Haryana and lives in Chhawni Mohalla. Bhanu also lives in the same locality.

Banks fleecing SSI sector, alleges chamber
Ludhiana, March 12
The Apex Chamber of Commerce and Industry has alleged that commercial banks are fleecing the small-scale industry (SSI) by charging the very high rate of interest on bank loans whereas other loans are normally charged sub PLR-level. This exploitation is further eroding the already-scarce financial resources of small and tiny units.

Hero Cycles workers go on strike
Ludhiana, March 12
Workers of Hero Cycles today observed strike for a few hours to protest against chargesheet served on four employees by the management. However, work was resumed after the workers and the management reached an agreement in the presence of some union leaders and the Assistant Labour Commissioner.

485 students receive degrees
Ludhiana, March 12
The local Guru Nanak Girls College, Model Town, held its convocation today. As many as 485 students received their degrees. In addition, 367 students were given away prizes by the chief guest, Mr Khushal Bahl, Minister for Education, Punjab.

Warning on fluid discharge from nose

An apparently minor ailment like watery discharge from the nose can be serious, and at times fatal, and should not be ignored. The warning was given by Dr M. K. Sobti, neurosurgeon and former head of neurosurgery at the Dayanand Medical College and Hospital, while addressing a press conference here today.

Northern Railway eves retain hockey title

The last round robin league match of the eighth All-India Mohinder Partap Singh Grewal Memorial Women’s Hockey Tournament, played here today at the Deso Turf ground of Punjab Agricultural University, proved to be a mismatch as defending champions Northern Railway thrashed Dhanoa Academy (HMV), Jalandhar, 5-0.
