Laxman’s knock the only saving grace
Brisbane, November 30 The touring Indians batted disastrously to finish their innings with a first innings deficit of 96 runs that was swelled further with the hosts having reached 79 for two in their second innings at stumps. Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly had said before the start of the game that it was difficult to achieve a result in a three-day game but the hosts intended to do exactly the same on the critical final day tomorrow. “We for sure are looking to press the issue,” declared Lee Carsledine, the first innings centurion, who was unbeaten on 31 in the second essay at close. Starting the day at 17 for three, the Indians suffered an immediate blow when Ganguly was dismissed for six in the team total of 26 for four. Laxman then played an elegant knock of 74 runs from 150 balls in 217 minutes which included 10 fours and a six before a delivery from off-spinner Chris Simpson hurried on to him and bent back his off-stump. He jumped from 50 to 74 in a mere 11 deliveries as he opened out in the afternoon after digging in his heels in the morning session. Laxman shared a useful stand of 77 from 220 balls with Rahul Dravid, who looked neat in his 38 runs before tamely lobbing a catch at short midwicket off fast bowler Joe Dawes. Laxman played marvellous drives through the offside and once even went down on his knees to smash off-spinner Simpson over midwicket fence for six but his dismissal came at the wrong time for the Indians. He had built up a swift stand of 42 runs from 43 balls for the sixth wicket with Sadgopan Ramesh (20) before his dismissal cut short what appeared to be a certain century. Ramesh once again wasted a very good start by dashing down the wicket for a non-existent single and failed to regain ground after being turned back too late by his partner Parthiv Patel. Patel (19) too was extremely positive in his short stay hitting four fours before he cut straight to deep point off Steve Magoffin. Ajit Agarkar, playing his first match on the tour, contributed a valuable 18 before being dismissed by Magoffin. The home team lost an early wicket when Chris Simpson (5) departed leg before wicket to Irfan Pathan but then they made good use of the remaining overs. The home team had powered to a score of 79 for two by close with Carsledine (31) and Daniel Payne (35) sharing a second-wicket stand of 67 runs in 72 minutes. Indians got something to cheer about at the fag end of the day when Payne fell leg before in the first over of part-time off-spinner Virender Sehwag. NEW DELHI:
In a belated attempt to plug the bowling loopholes, the cricket board today appointed former Australian left-arm paceman Bruce Reid as the bowling coach of the Indian cricket team for the gruelling four-Test series against Australia beginning on Thursday. “The working committee today agreed to appoint Reid as the bowling coach for the four-Test series,” BCCI chief Jagmohan Dalmiya told reporters here but did not disclose the emolument that Reid would be paid for the coaching stint. Dalmiya said the team management had requested for the services of the Aussie bowler and the board felt it was justified because there were as many as three left-arm pacemen in the squad. “Out of five pace bowlers three are left
armers. Our main bowler Zaheer Khan is not performing consistently. Ashish Nehra is making a comeback after an injury and Irfan Pathan is a rookie. The captain
(Sourav Ganguly) said at this juncture the team wanted someone to guide it,” said
Dalmiya. — PTI

Bhandari scalps 5, Gambhir 117 n.o.
Pune, November 30 Gautam Gambhir (117) and Rohan Gavaskar (26) were at the crease at stumps. The visitors, resuming on their overnight score of 255 for 3, were bowled out for 340 by the hosts at lunch for the addition of just 85 more runs to their scoreboard during the pre-lunch session. Murali Kartik inducted into the team for this test, gave Bhandari good company and took the other two Sri Lankan wickets. For the Sri Lankan team the only batsman to offer any resistance was R. Dalmiya
defends stand on Kale
NEW DELHI: The Board of Control for Cricket in India chief Jagmohan Dalmiya today defended his stand of suspending Abhijit Kale saying he was “convinced” about the need to restrict the Maharashtra batsman from playing given the seriousness of the
allegation. Dalmiya refused to elaborate on whether the selectors had legal evidence of Kale offering to bribe them for a place in the national side and said he did not want to “prejudice the inquiry” by commenting on the matter at the moment. “But I can say this much that the charge against Kale is not a simple one. If it was a simple matter I would not have taken such a decision. I had to act very cautiously,” Dalmiya told reporters after a meeting of the working committee here. “Personally I feel I have taken a right decision. If a similar situation arises in future I will take a similar decision,” Dalmiya said.

Ex-skipper suspended Shimla, November 30 The fate of the errant player will be finally decided on the basis of the report of the inquiry committee. However, he will be out of the 15-member squad for the ensuing Ranji Trophy matches till a final decision is taken in the matter. |

Tripura clash with
Haryana today Rohtak, November 30 Though Haryana appear to be a better side on paper, it must be cause of concern for the hosts to notice the presence of off-spinner Ashish Kapoor and left-arm leg spinner Sonu Sharma in the Tripura squad especially keeping in view the fact that spinners had dominated the proceedings in the first-round match played at the same venue this week. In fact, Haryana are not in a position take their opponents lightly as a number of players in the Tripura squad possess enough experience, having played for other teams in the past. They have in the squad a middle order batsmen in S. Mahesh and wicketkeeper T.R. Arsu, who earlier represented Tamil Nadu. Left-arm spinner Sonu Sharma, who had played a lot of cricket for Haryana in the Ranji Trophy, is in a position to judge the wicket and conditions right from the word go. Similarly Tripura skipper and off-spinner Ashish Kapoor has vast experience of playing for
Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Tamil Nadu and is among the wickets this season. In the first round match against Vidharbha, Ashish had bagged 10 wickets. Chetan Sachdev and Ritesh Jaiswal were also among the runs as Chetan had scored a century against Vidharbha and Jaiswal had played a knock of 76 in that match. But the team would desperately need support from other batsmen to perform well in the match. On the other hand, Haryana who are without the services of their regular wicketkeeper Ajay Ratra and right-arm leg spinner Amit Mishra, are likely to field the same winning squad which did duty against Jammu and Kashmir. In their previous encounters this year, both the teams had an upper hand on their rivals in their first round matches. Tripura had garnered two points by virtue of their first innings lead in drawn tie against Vidharbha whereas Haryana had collected four points after defeating Jammu and Kashmir by eight wickets. Both the teams will name their final eleven just before the start of the match tomorrow.

Depleted Delhi face tough task against Punjab Chandigarh, November 30 One does not often find Bhupinder Singh senior, or for that matter any other coach of a first-class team, getting so engrossed with the players, taking care of so many aspects to the game. Bhupinder was there marshalling his bowlers, shouting instructions to the batters and then engaging them in sundry fielding drills. If the genial former international seamer was showing so much involvement with the players, the rivals Delhi should only have a tough fight at their hands, when the crucial Elite Group “A” Ranji Trophy match gets under way at the PCA Stadium ground tomorrow. Punjab’s already strong batting has further been bolstered by the inclusion of India one-day player and swashbuckling batsman Yuvraj Singh. The Chandigarh batsman, who made a forgettable debut against the Black Caps at the same venue last month, would only be too eager to have a nice knock under his belt to put his campaign back on the rails. Delhi team, on the other hand, is in an unenviable position. It is not often than the formidable outfit suffers successive defeats in the national cricket championships. After three matches, they also have identical two points in their kitty! And that virtually half the regular side will take the field tomorrow should not be a comforting thought for the coach either. Particularly as those who found berths in the squad have exactly failed to grab these with both hands. In the first match of the Ranji Trophy, they struggled to take Uttar Pradesh wickets in the second innings, who finished with 141 for one after they had been forced to follow on. Delhi’s performance then plummeted when they crashed to a 10-wicket defeat against defending champions Mumbai as Wasim Jaffer hit a breezy century in the second innings. Perhaps the biggest and the most unexpected shock was in store for them as they ran into a determined JP Yadav, who slammed a resolute century after taking three crucial wickets as Delhi were handed their second consecutive defeat by the Railways. Things are not expected to be easy when the depleted side clash against arch-rivals Punjab in the four-day match on their home turf. Delhi will again have to rely on a couple of greenhorns as five regular players are missing from the side. Virender Sehwag, Akash Chopra and Ashish Nehra are currently in Australia along with the Indian squad, while another prolific batsman Gautam Gambhir and Amit Bhandari are playing for India “A” against the visiting Sri Lanka “A” in the three-Test series. Punjab skipper Dinesh Mongia and opener Ravneet Ricky have scored two centuries each in the previous matches, while former internationals Reetinder Sodhi and Pankaj Dharmani, as they revealed in the last match, are finding their touch. Keeping in view the bouncy nature of the track here, Punjab are expected to play a four-pronged seam attack, while one spinner would get the nod. Revealing this here today Mr Sushil Kapoor, manager of the Punjab squad, revealed that it would be a toss-up between off-spinner Rajesh Sharma and left-armer Navdeep Singh for the spinner’s slot. If need be, skipper Dinesh Mongia and Yuvraj Singh can also chip in and assist the regular spinner, he said. Mongia took four wickets ( four for 34) in the first match against Kerala. Both the teams were at the nets. While the hosts had a prolonged morning practice session, the visitors warmed up for the battle ahead in the afternoon. The wicket having a fair tinge of green on it means the toss could be crucial for the key contest. |
Himachal suffer
innings defeat Dharamsala, November 30 Punjab went on to pile up a huge score of 383 for four before declaring the innings. The captain of Punjab team
S.P. Singh scored 187 runs and was supported by Bilwant Singh who scored 110 runs. Himachal facing a deficit of 310 runs could not meet the challenge and were bowled out for 164 in 47.2 overs. For hosts Rahul scored 52, Sobers 39 and Bhaskar 26. Varun Khanna claimed 5 wickets for 34 runs while Sandeep got 3 for 43.

Melbourne, November 30 It was Australia’s 28th title, second only to the USA, and their first home triumph since beating Sweden on grass at Kooyong here in 1986. A scheduled second reverse singles match between Lleyton Hewitt and Carlos Moya was not played. The ‘scud’ looked down and out as ferrero surged back after dropping the opening two sets and had all the momentum leading into the fifth and deciding set. Adding to the drama Philippoussis took a lengthy injury time-out courtside for a team chiropractor to treat a painful right serving shoulder before he resumed and conjured one of the biggest turnarounds in a Davis Cup final. Despite wincing in pain from each serve, Philippoussis ripped through Ferrero’s serve three times in the fifth set to seal his most important career victory. “I came out thinking ‘I don’t care how bad the arm was hurting, just put everything into this last set’, there was no way I was going to pull out,” Philippoussis told a post-match press conference. “Especially, 6-0 in the fifth, i don’t honestly know. I just thought ‘give it everything and when i was returning just chip and come in after everything, if he got past me, then too good.’” Philippoussis fed off the energy of the cheering home crowd and grew stronger as ferrero wilted under the Australian’s renewed challenge. Team-mates feared Philippoussis had spent his last energy and Lleyton Hewitt was warming up in the team dressing room preparing for the final singles rubber against Carlos Moya, but in the end it didn’t prove necessary. “The crowd were incredible and this is what Davis Cup is all about, especially playing at home, there was no way I would have got through without them,” Philippoussis said. “Not only do they get you up, but they get the opposition down too. It just numbs the pain a little bit, they were just so loud, they were awesome.” Philippoussis said he may have torn a muscle and will have a scan tomorrow to check the extent of the injury. The scud felt ferrero lost his rhythm in the fifth set, as he got stronger. It was wildly contrasting match for philippoussis, who began like a bomb, a far cry from his sluggish start in his losing four-set match against clay-courter Moya on Friday. Philippoussis, whose power serve was on song in the opening two sets, stuttered in the third and fourth sets as Ferrero hit back. The Aussie served a total of 21 aces, but conceded 16 double faults — half of them in the third and fourth sets —before claiming victory. The defeat was Ferrero’s second this weekend and he was surprised by the Australian’s recovery to end Spain’s title chances. — AFP |
BPCL edge past Russian XI New Delhi, November 30 In a close match, which looked like a one-sided contest at one point of time, later witnessed a flurry of goals as the first half produced five. BPCL forged ahead in the 15th minute through Pundlik B, who hit in a field goal. In the next nine minutes, they added two more goals when Tushar Khandekar converted a penalty corner and Amar Aiyamma scored a field goal. But the Russians were not in a mood to concede the fight despite trailing by three goals, and they mounted intense pressure on the BPCL goal to strike home two goals in three minutes when Starkov Dimitry scored a field goal in the 26th minute and Arutynian Eduard converted a penalty corner in the 28th minute to narrow BPCL’s lead to 3-2. Seven minutes into the second session, captain Ajay Saroha scored off a penalty corner to widen the lead of BPCL while the Russians ran close when they pulled off their third goal in the 48th minute through Arutynian Eduard, who converted a penalty stroke. But BPCL managed to cling onto their slender one-goal lead in the rest of the session to emerge victorious.

UP trounce Haryana 6-0 Jalandhar, November 30 In an one-sided affair, Uttar Pradesh crushed the hopes of rivals Haryana 6-0. The match started on a fast note as Uttar Pradesh dominated the proceedings throughout the match. In the 11th minute, Avinabh made no mistake in converting a penalty stroke to sound the board (1-0). The lead was further consolidated in the 28th minute, when Rajeev Bhatnagar netted the ball from the left flank (2-0). In the second half, Parmod Kumar gained control over the ball and pushed the ball straight into box in the 36th minute (3-0). Uttar Pradesh were awarded another penalty stroke in the 38th minute, which was used to improve the tally by Avinabh (4-0). Parmod Kumar struck again in the 54th minute and dodged the defence circle to score a field goal (5-0). Then, it was the turn of Krishan Kumar, who scored a field goal from the left flank in the 56th minute to lock the fate of their opponents (6-0). In another match, Madhya Pradesh registered a 7-0 victory over West Bengal. Dempo down Mahindras Mumbai, November 30 Dempo broke the scoreless deadlock by a brilliant strike by right winger Samir Naik in the 27th minute. The Goan side ended an equally lacklustre second-half by adding the second goal when Clifford Miranda slotted home three minutes from the end. Mahindras, also playing their opening tie, were well set to score by the end of the first quarter when star striker Raphael Patron muffed back-to-back opportunities. On the first occasion his header went over and soon after, he shot wide from close range. Recovering from the early attacks by Mahindras, Dempo went into the lead when Samir Naik fired in a brilliant goal, depositing the ball in the net from 30 yards, on the half-volley.

pip East Bengal
Margao, November 30 Salgaocar who dictated terms over their rivals in the midfield scored through Felix Ibrebru (24th) and Micky Fernandes (29th). East Bengal who came back strongly in the second half reduced the margin in the 38th minute through Douglas Silva. Tomba Singh, hero of the Durand Cup finals, led the attack for the host as he masterminded in plotting both the goals. Salgaocar who kept on the pressure, increased the lead five minutes later when Fernandes met Tomba Singh cross with a flying header to find the far post.
