Indians face Queensland today Brisbane, November 28 The Indians, desperate to get their act together after being given a pounding by Victoria in the tour opener at Melbourne, must be disappointed to see eight key players missing from the Queensland line-up. The hosts are busy in their Pura Cup engagement against South Australia in Adelaide but the scheduling of the games, deliberate or otherwise, has left the tourists badly undone in their preparation. Queensland will go into the match without Matthew Hayden, Andrew
Bichel, Andrew Symonds, Michael Kasprowicz, Martin Love, Jimmy Maher, Nathan Hauritz and Stuart Law and a virtual Queensland Academy of Sport team will take on the tourists before the first Test begins at Gabba on December 4. However, Indian captain Sourav Ganguly said his players would try to make the most of the match. "First or second eleven, we hope to get good practice from Queensland ahead of the Test," Ganguly said at the Gabba where the team practiced this afternoon. "I hope we get good practice, we need good outing for our batters and bowlers and this is what these side games are meant to be," he said. The Indians are terribly worried on the count of their bowling which is unlikely to be tested by the rookie Queensland line-up. Just about the only batsman of some recognition Queensland have in their line-up is young Aaron Nye, 20, who was the leading run-scorer in Brisbane first grade last season with an aggregate of 918 runs. Then there is Craig
Philipson, 21, who is yet to make his first class debut but was part of the Australian Under-19 team which won the World Cup in 2001-2002. Daniel Payne, Shane Jargensen and Steve Sarrell have all been given a first-class break only in this season by Queensland. Indian batsmen though could have some useful practice with Scott Bryant, Joe Dawes and Steve Magoffin all having made some impression as fast bowlers last season. Bryant hails from Zimbabwe but was granted Australian residency in 2003. He is an excellent sportsman, having represented Zimbabwe at youth level in hockey, swimming, cricket, triathlon and athletics. He played for Essex in English county this season, taking 37 wickets from 11 games before a knee surgery set him back. Dawes took 43 first class wickets to get past the 150-wicket mark last season and played county cricket with Middlesex this season. He is a former policeman who also works as a media adviser for a parliamentarian. Magoffin is rated as promising on the basis of his performance at the junior levels which includes most wickets for academy team last season. The Indians are keen to try out VVS Laxman and Anil Kumble in this game as both missed the tie against Victoria because of flu. Laxman has been a prolific scorer for India in recent times, including 279 runs from two Tests against New Zealand at an average of 139.50 in the October home series. Having picked up five wickets at a high cost of 90. per innings, Kumble is not only keen to restore his reputation but also extend his distinguished career which clearly is on its last leg. Virender Sehwag gets another chance to restore his confidence before the first Test and both Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid, the captain and vice-captain of the side, are keen to have some runs under their belt. Ganguly said among the four to sit out in this game will be little master Sachin Tendulkar. "The four who will sit out in this game are Sachin (Tendulkar), Zaheer (Khan), Harbhajan (Singh) and Ashish
(Nehra)," said Ganguly. "The other 12 are up for selection." On the other hand, almost certain is the return of Ajit Agarkar who missed out at the MCG but is looking forward to tomorrow's game. Agarkar has lately looked in good nick and was also India's leading wicket-taker on the previous tour of 1999-2000 with 11 scalps at 31.91, including Steve Waugh's scalp three times. India: Akash Chopra, Virender
Sehwag, Rahul Dravid, S Ramesh, Sourav Ganguly, VVS Laxman, Parthiv Patel, Ajit
Agarkar, Anil Kumble, Laxmipathy Balaji, Irfan Pathan, Deep Dasgupta. Queensland:
Scott Bryant, Lee Carsledine, Joe Dawes, Christ Hartley, Steve
Magoffin, Steve Ryan, Aaron Nye, Craig Philipson, Steve Sarrell, Shane
Jargensen, Daniel Payne.

Aussies will miss McGrath, says Ganguly Brisbane, November 28 "McGrath and Warney will be missed, no doubt about it. When they didn't play against England two years ago, Australia suffered in Sydney. They make a huge difference because they pick most wickets or have picked most wickets for their country in the last eight or ten years," Ganguly said. "It is like when teams come to India, they find Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh missing from our line-up. They would be missed but then injury, especially in the case of fast bowlers, is part and parcel of modern cricket," Ganguly said on the eve of their three-day match against Queensland.

SYDNEY: Ricky Ponting was today named Australia’s Test Captain to replace Steve Waugh who is retiring at the end of the upcoming series against India. Cricket Australia Chairman Bob Merriman said the board accepted the recommendation of the national selection panel to appoint Ponting as Steve Waugh’s successor in early January. "Ricky has proven to be an outstanding international captain and leader.. His record leading up to and through this year’s ICC World Cup, in the West Indies and in recent weeks in India speaks for itself," Merriman said. — PTI |
Bruce Reid open
to India’s offer Brisbane, November 28 If all goes to plan, Reid, a former Australian left-arm paceman who gave nothing away through a nagging line during his playing days, should be available to the Indian bowlers before the first Test at Brisbane on December 4. Reid confirmed Indian coach John Wright spoke to him more than once on the issue and he was now waiting for the Indian cricket board to clear his appointment at its working committee meeting in New Delhi on Sunday. “John has spoken to me thrice on the possibility of me joining as a bowling coach,” Reid told PTI over the telephone from Perth. Indian team management sources here revealed that Reid has asked for “extremely low fees” to assist the Indians. The tall bowler has quoted a fee of $ 1,500 per week which is on the lower side by international standards. NEW DELHI: The cricket board is expected to take a decision on appointing former Australian speedster Bruce Reid as the bowling coach of the Indian team for the Australian tour at its working committee meeting here on Sunday. Board sources confirmed that a request for utilising the services of Reid had been made by the team management and the matter could come up for discussion at the emergency meeting convened to take stock of the Abhijit Kale controversy.

Court restrains BCCI
from barring Kale
Pune, November 28 The District Civil Court Judge V.D. Kulkarni after hearing the arguments of both Kale and the BCCI issued temporary injunction restraining the BCCI from suspending the player from cricket matches including the Ranji Plate Division and other tournaments conducted by the board. The court also directed the BCCI not to implement the
suspension order against the cricketer thereby allowing him to play cricket matches including the Ranji Trophy. Kale had challenged the suspension on the grounds that the order issued by the BCCI through Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) was “illegal, arbitrary and bad in law”. He had also pleaded that he be allowed to play Ranji Trophy matches because he was officially selected by the MCA on merit. After two days of arguments from Kale’s side as well as the BCCI, the verdict came today in a jam packed court room where a tense looking Kale was present. Talking to reporters after hearing the verdict, Kale said “I feel a bit relieved”. Kale was suspended by the cricket board after BCCI president Jagmohan Dalmiya received written complaints from two national selectors — Kiran More and Pranob Roy — that the player had offered them Rs 10 lakh each for a place in the Australia-bound Indian team. Kale in his application had asked the court to “issue a temporary injunction restraining the BCCI from obstructing him under the garb of suspension from playing cricket matches including the Ranji Plate Division, where the plaintiff is duly selected”. The BCCI had given Kale the official letter about the appointment of the inquiry committee and a notice asking him to appear before the BCCI inquiry commissioner D V Subba Rao was handed over to him yesterday at the court when he had come for hearing. Producing this letter before the court, Kale’s lawyer argued that the fact that the letter about the appointment of inquiry committee and notice asking him to appear before commissioner was handed over to him in the court itself indicated the malafide intention of the BCCI. Kale’s counsel Manoj Wadekar had termed the suspension order “illegal, arbitrary and bad in law” as the player was not given an opportunity to give his view and said the suspension was ordered merely on the basis of allegations by the two selectors. The BCCI counsel Milind Hartalkar contended that there was nothing illegal or malafide about the suspension as the board president was empowered to suspend a player if he found that there was a valid reason.

Trouble
brewing in DDCA over selection New Delhi, November 28 In a joint letter to DDCA president Arun
Jaitley, who is also the Union Law and Justice Minister, the duo have sought an emergency meeting of the executive committee “to discuss remedial measures to ensure fair selection of Delhi teams before it is too late”. Delhi, who took two points off Uttar Pradesh in their first match of the Elite Group for taking the first innings lead at
Kanpur, nullified the advantage when they lost by 10 wickets to Mumbai at the Jamia Milia ground in Delhi. Before they could recover from that shock, Railways also inflicted a humiliating three-wicket defeat on Delhi at the Karnail Singh Stadium last week, and the cricket followers of the Capital rubbed their eyes in disbelief. It’s true that Delhi are without some of their star players like Virender Sehwag and Ashish Nehra who are on national duty in Australia, but still, the Capital is flush with so much cricket talent that things should not have come to such a pass that they succumbed to teams like Mumbai and Railways in their own backyard. Mr Khanna and Mr Sareen have pointed out that the “abysmally low performance of the Delhi Ranji team has not only put a big question mark on the selection system and procedure of the Delhi cricket teams, but has also cast suspicion on fair selection”. They said the omission of wicket-keeper-cum-batsman Varun Kumar from the Delhi Ranji team was “highly baffling” as he had performed “creditably in the previous cricket seasons in the under-22 and under-25 matches”. They have also questioned the “wisdom” of the selection committee in picking medium-pacer Arun Singh in place of opening batsman Akash Chopra. They also could not fathom why “an opening batsman, whose selection against the Railways had raised a lot of controversy” has been retained for the match against Punjab “despite his utter failure”. Mr Khanna, who is also the vice-chairman of the National Cricket Academy, and a former vice-president of the BCCI and Dr Sareen have advocated that players from the under-22 and under-19 teams with “proven good performances” must be given preference over “comparatively unknown players from other states without any worthwhile performance”. They said allegations of favouritism in the selection of the Ranji team had “brought DDCA into disrepute” and requested the intervention of Mr Jaitley in restoring the “good name of the DDCA at the earliest”. |

Kiwis arrive in Pak
Lahore, November 28 Security
was extraordinarily tight for the New Zealanders in hopes of having
the team complete its first Pakistan tour in more than two years. In
May of last year, a bomb exploded outside the team’s hotel in
Karachi, killing 14 people. Nobody on the team was injured but the
squad aborted the tour. This year’s trip was delayed for one week when New Zealand diplomats received an e-mail threatening the team’s safety during Ramadan, which ended two days ago. The team decided to push ahead, with a delayed scheduled, after receiving security assurance from international cricket officials.

drub Navy New Delhi, November 28 Calling the shots from the outset, Star Club were well-served by their captain Mohammed Sarwar who opened the account in the fifth minute when the converted a penalty corner. Sarwar went on to add another goal in the 37th minute, which was a snap field goal. Mohad Azad dodged past the Navy defence to slot home the second goal in the seventh minute. Then for the rest of the first session, there was no scoring as the Navy men messed up their defence to foil the Pakistan forwards, who missed the target on quite a few occasions. Immediately after resumption, Sarwar scored the third goal while Mudassar and Shahid Rabbani pitched in with the fourth and fifth goals. Indian Navy, who failed to convert their scoring opportunities, including eight penalty corners, pulled off the consolation goal through Manoj Lokhande in the 43rd minute when he made no mistake with a penalty stroke. Eighth National Football League kicks off on a low key Chandigarh, November 28 The current edition of the NFL has a strong Goa and Kolkata representation. Out of the 12 teams, four are from Kolkata. They include defending champions East Bengal, Mohun Bagan , Tollygunge Agragami and debutants Mohammedan Sporting. Five others are from Goa, namely last year’s runners-up Salgaocar SC, Vasco, Churchill Brothers, Dempo SC and debutants Haywards SC. From north India, there is only one outfit, namely JCT Phagwara of Punjab. The other two are Mumbai’s Mahindra United and Chennai’s Indian Bank. Hence it might once again boil down to a battle between two football powerhouses – Goa and Kolkata. But Mumbai’s Mahindra United, Chennai’s Indian Bank and Punjab’s JCT Phagwara have enough ammunition to check the Goa-Kolkata domination. Critics have been crying hoarse over the NFL’s impact on other national tournaments but there is no denying the fact that it is primarily due to the NFL that Indian football today has acquired a foothold in the international arena. India’s victory over the UAE in the World Cup qualifying round; title win in the LG Cup in Vietnam; East Bengal’s historic title win in the ASEAN Club Championship and India’s second position in the recently concluded Afro-Asian Games at Hyderabad can be attributed to the successful and uninterrupted run of the NFL over the past seven years. As in the preceding years, the eighth National Football League is being played on home-and-away basis. The league will be split into two phases of 11 rounds each. The first phase comprising 66 matches which commenced today will end on January 22. The second phase which will commence after a short break will extend upto April,2004. In all 132 matches will be played. There is no change in the prize money for the winners and runners-up. While the champions will pocket Rs 40 lakh, the runners-up will be awarded a cash prize of Rs 22 lakh. The cities which will be hosting the NFL ties are Kolkata, Fatorda(Goa), Mumbai, Chennai, and Ludhiana. Punjab’s premier outfit JCT Phagwara, as in the preceding years, have opted for Ludhiana as the venue for all their home ties. The matches will be played at Guru Nanak Stadium and may be day-night affairs. For the current edition, JCT will be banking on foreign recruits Musa Alieu, goalkeeper Mansuru Mohammed and veteran Nigerian striker Stephan Abarowei. The team also includes star Indian striker IM Vijayan, who recently announced his retirement, and midfielder Joe Paul Ancheri. Besides, JCT will be looking to a bunch of local players who can form an effective combination. Kolkata’s East Bengal, who won the NFL last year accumulating 49 points, will not only be defending their title but also their reputation. Having made history by clinching the ASEAN Club Championship on July 26 at Jakarta, the red and gold brigade under the charge of Subhas Bhowmick will once again be looking to Baichung Bhutia, Deepak Mondal, Mike Okoro and others to add glitter. Arch-rivals Mohun Bagan, who were in turmoil at the end of last season following the exit of Subrata Bhattacharya as coach, are all set to make a new beginning under coach Aloke Mukherjee. Their first victory over Mohammedan Sporting whom they beat 2-0 at Kolkata today, perhaps provides an inkling of their future plans. Strikers Renedy Singh and Jose Ramirez Barreto, who scored for Bagan today, are expected to play a major role in Bagan’s campaign. Mohammedan Sporting, who qualified for the NFL by finishing runners-up in the second division last season, also have several talented players like goalkeeper Gumpe Rime, Reazul Mustafa and skipper Hussein Mustafi. But it remains to be seen whether they can really make an impact. Tollygunge Agragami, as usual can be termed as dark horses. They can beat any outfit on their day and fall flat in the very next encounter. The Goan challenge will be the toughest with as many as five teams out to garner top honours. Among the five contestants, Salgaocar have won the title once and recently shocked East Bengal in the Durand Cup final, while Vasco came very near last year. Churchill Brothers were runners-up in the inaugural edition while Dempo finished fifth last year with 35 points. But the team to watch will be Haywards Sporting Club, who will be making their debut. As champions in the second division last season, Haywards indeed sounded a warning and African recruit Amaechi Tochokwu along with Vincent Pires and Dudu Omagbemi played a key role in bringing Haywards into the elite league. Mumbai’s Mahindra United are expected to be among the major contenders. Victory in the Federation Cup followed by the memorable win over East Bengal in the Super Cup have sent their spirits soaring. Chennai’s Indian Bank, who barely
escaped relegation last season finishing 10th, will also be keen to put up an improved show. Last season they conceded the maximum 53 goals in the NFL and it will be this department which is expected to be accorded priority by the team management. The participating teams 1. East Bengal 7. Mohun Bagan 2. Salgaocar SC 8. Mahindra United 3. Vasco SC 9. Tollygunge Agragami 4. JCT Phagwara 10. Indian Bank 5. Churchill Bros 11. Haywards Sporting
Club 6. Dempo SC 12. Mohammedan Sporting |
National
Football League Kolkata, November 28 The first goal came in the 32nd
minute of the play when following an Asim Biswas back pass, Bagan captain Renedy Singh hit a regulation volley. However, the ball took a bad bounce near Mohammedan goalie Gumpe Rime's feet and rolled into the net. If the first goal was a freak affair, the second one had brilliance written all over it. The move began with Mehtab Hussain changing flanks with a long centre. Monitombi Singh following the ball on the far side sprinted to the corner post and sent a low cross which Barreto met with a first time flick of his right leg. Rime was only a spectator as the ball hit the inside of the far post to enter the netting 2-0.
